‘Vote these buggers out of power’ - Prof Jonathan Jansen
South Africa is quite literally “falling apart” at the helm of the governing ANC, filled to the brim with ministers unfit for office, arrogantly believing the rural vote will save them in perpetuity. In a broad-ranging, no-holds-barred interview about the state of the nation, internationally-distinguished academic and author Prof Jonathan Jansen tells BizNews’ Michael Appel that South Africa “needs to vote these buggers [ANC] out of power” come national elections in 2024. From the crime, unemployment and electricity supply crisis to fumbling education policies, Jansen says he’s advising talented young South Africans to leave the country in the short term. He wants our best and brightest to then return once we’re out of the “lacuna, this vacuum, this interregnum, if you wish”, to help rebuild the country. Jansen delivers incisive analysis that cowers to nothing and no one.

As a teacher you failed to mention the following. Class sizes. How the hell do you teach a class of 60 in a class meant for 30? The education department is top heavy. High salaried individuals there that is not an asset to township schools. Caps curriculum is also too busy.
Prof Jonathan Jansen, you have made an impact on my decisions and I appreciate the articles you have written over the years. They helped me to be a strong person and focus on my career path. What a Man. Why, why and believe me there are other like him, cannot just come together and lift SA out of the mud. Good for you Professor Jansen, you are a man and leader in one piece.
The prof doesn't think that the DA understands the history of race in this country and doesn't support them by a long shot. But he lives in the well run DA province of the Western Cape. He lists two young DA mayor's as giving hope for the future. Weird.

@@edwindakile4784 yes, if he voted for the ANC IN 1994 and 1999, he was not the only one in minority groups that did. That was a different ANC or what seemed to be. This assumption that what has happened was inevitable; the ones who are jumping up and down now saying ' we told you so' feeling vindicated in some way, make me both sad and angry. We need special units like the Scorpions and special forces which can uproot the ùnderground Mafia. This crisis is much deeper than only politics, it started with careless politics which allowed criminals to strive. This criminals pay weak councillors of small political parties to keep the ANC and EFF in control by voting mayors out of their positions.

Prof Jansen is so right about concentrating on the early years of education . If the youth have a good grounding the later school years will deliver the goods almost by their own maturity and applying their early learning years . I am not suggesting that teachers in high school aren’t important . They really are important! But their job is made easier if their is a solid back ground on which to build .
I absolutely agree with Prof Jansen 💯% These scoundrels from the ANC and the EFF (who have ambitions for power) must be voted out of power.

Ignored or silenced by who?
Impressive and great context!
I like Jansen but he's still in denial... He's still clinging to South African exceptionalism. Here's an interesting perspective that's worth chewing on: Nelson Mandela was overwhelmingly influenced by western democratic ideals. His vision of a prosperous, united, non racist south Africa was basically a British/American vision fueled by Western philosophy and law and Christian values. That Western influence has faded and now we are left with the awful cocktail of African politics mixed with socialism. The result is a performative society which acts out the part of a functioning democracy but which at its core is authoritarian, racist, tribal, and pathologically tolerant of incompetence and corruption. Until we become humble and begin to emulate the successful countries of the world, we will never be like them. That's what South African exceptionalism is: the assumption that we will magically emerge into our rainbow nation utopia through communist/socialist policies and a primitive tribe-like structure of political leadership where the people at the top can do whatever they want without consequence and the people at the bottom not only make due with nothing, but applaud their leaders, believing in the myths the leaders propagate through their lies and sophistry. Japan became a superpower by emulating the principles and policies of America and democratic nations. South Africa on the other hand prefers to rub shoulders with Russia and introduce nonsense policies that take away freedom rather than create it. We are arrogant, ideological and resting far too heavily on our laurels. The days of reckoning are on the horizon. They will not be easy.

It is a paid job and he has been given the opportunity to do part time work while he does his final year. It is a win win situation and these individual become immediately productive. The other point is something Mentioned to a south African educator 20 years ago. South Africa need to look at India's model of education, resulting in the Tecno revolution that took place there.
