The new Vortex Crossfire HD binoculars have been released and I decided to review them and compare them to the previous, non "HD" version.

    I researched what magnification was best for squirrel hunting and was seeing 8x42 and the rest was easy, with the Vortex life time warrantee, you dont even need a receipt for them, just print out the form on their web site and toss them in a box and send them out and they will repair or replace them! I have had mine out several times now and not only can I see quite a ways off with out any vibration, they are crystal clear even in low light, I can for the first time use a pair of binoculars without having to take my glasses off, what a difference that alone makes to someone who wears glasses! I have had no issues with the focus wheel on mine and now they come with the Glasspak harness. about 3/4 of the way into the video I wasn't sure what you were even talking about (never owned a pair this expensive) I have never taken binos that serious, but I guess for those of use that do its good to know...Thanks And I agree with you on the HD thing, but regardless of what you make, its all about marketing and if putting HD (or anything else) on it makes it look one step above the competition...everyone's doing it!

    You made a big deal about the "HD" like if your expecting "high definition" when its actually "High Density" extra-low dispersion glass for edge-to-edge clarity, low-light-conquering XR anti-reflective coatings, and a super wide field of view. This is from their website, but you are correct, it is the coating on the lens. Good review though.

    Thanks. I'll double-check their website later to confirm, but I think you may be looking at the description of a different binocular. The Crossfire HD does not use any high density, Extra low Dispersion glass (other wise known as ED glass). I believe their site specifically states that it has a "High Definition optical system." It's really not that big of a deal, I just think it starts to feel like marketing speak at this point.

    thank you! i'm trying to choose a binos and, just a question. in their product description they say the minimun focus distance is 6feet and you say its like 7. i know, almost the same, but that is one of the main features i'm looking for so, to me is interesting to know to compare with other options. thank you again!

    I can't remember if I precisely measured, but if I get a chance I'll measure the minimum focus distance. If the minimum focus distance is important to you, the Pentax Papilio II have a minimum focus distance of about a foot and a half. They come in 6.5x21 and 8.5x21. I have the 6.5x21 and they are a hoot. Decent optics overall, but that minimum focus distance is fun. They are on sale at B&H right now for $126. Just thought I'd mention them since close focus is important to you. They don't have the most amazing build, but they are relatively small and light. They come with rear caps, but no front cap. So you have to keep them in the case if you want to keep the front objective covered. And I don't remember them being waterproof/resistant. They might be, but I don't remember for sure. They aren't the best binoculars, but if you are looking for really close focusing binoculars, they do that.

    HD Lens Elements HD (High Density) extra-low dispersion glass delivers impressive resolution and colour fidelity, resulting in High Definition images. Vortex have quantified it.

  • @bigtb1717

    The Crossfire doesn't have high density, extra-low dispersion glass elements. It is simply described as having a high definition optical system. Extra low Dispersion glass (Often called ED glass) is a specific feature of some of their higher end models and is not present in the Crossfire HD or Diamondback HD binoculars.

    I think they copy and pasted incorrectly. On Vortex's website they are very specific about which binoculars they say have extra low dispersion glass. The Crossfire HD and Diamondback HD do not have that feature listed, they only say they have high definition optical systems. They specifically list extra low dispersion glass elements (which add cost) in the feature list of all binoculars that have them (on the Vortex website).

    What is your budget? I imagine 6-8 power would be enough, but do you have a power in mind? Lighting won't really be a big issue, so you probably don't need a huge objective diameter. If it were me, I'd want something compact for a use like that. Probably something like a 6x30, or even 6x25. Having said that, I don't have any in that size, so I would simply research reviews and recommendations in that category. But if I'm way off-base (no pun intended) in terms of what you had in mind, let me know.

    bigtb1717, fine review, but there might be one more thing to check. Improved low light capabilities. You stated the color accuracy may be shifted a little to yellow end of the spectrum. Leupold's get the same comments and are known for their better low light sensitivity. The main HD difference may be better low light sensitivity. A worthwhile consideration. I don't have an HD and non HD pair to compare. Compare the two in low light conditions and give us an update. It may be the difference. If not, still a fine review on your part or I wouldn't bother commenting. Be well

    I spent quite a bit of time in low light switching back and forth trying to determine any noticeable benefit from one or the other. I would pick out a specific spot in one or the other then switch to see if I could pick out any more or less detail. There were times when I thought I saw an advantage through the HD version, then a moment later I would lean back toward them being the same. In the end, I decided that if there was a difference it was very small. I think part of that probably comes down to the large exit pupil they have, meaning both are very bright. It's possible that any difference would be more noticeable on the 10x version since both are dimmer to begin with. Some may find the warmer tone works better for them in low light, and if that's the case they may prefer the HD version for that reason. Personally, I didn't find that to be the case, but it's possible that someone would.

    Yeah, with the sales on the orignal, I’d personally choose the non-HD version right now. The case it comes with is still pretty nice, and the difference in optical quality is small.

    I haven't actually tried the Diamondbacks. They do have some optical upgrades, but I can't say how much it would translate into performance. Honestly, if they had a more consistent focus knob, I'd be tempted just for that. Is there anywhere local where you could look through both of them?

    Well I have to tell you that comparing it with at least 3 more brands with the same model in the same price range this binoculars were by far the best. Well having dark shadows is simply the way they match your actual eyes . In my case they fit excellent no dark shadows other options even almost 100 $ more expensive produced dark shadows at that point the price difference of 100 $ was not the issue but the fit was. I am writing this only to show that what fits someone perfect might not fit some else and binoculars are very much like shoes they might be the best in world but it is highly possible that they will not fit everyone and trying it on in person is the best way. Also the opinion are subjective because this is not a camera lens that you can get a digital image and actually create a objective reference to show the result. Regarding HD this is coating related all camera manufactures do the same once they change the coating they add a new symbol this does not mean that there will be optical change but as you mention light transmission. Again this small change did make this optics to stand out comparing to other brands when I compared them side by side.

  • @bigtb1717

    @bigtb1717

    2 жыл бұрын

    Absolutely, everyone's eyes are different. My biggest reason for this review was to see if the HD version was worth the upgrade over the old version. I think the better case alone makes the HD version a better value. But if you have the previous version, I don't think you will noticed much difference, optically. As far as comfort or ease of getting a good eye placement, this will obviously be different for everyone and I can only relate my experience. If possible, it's a good idea to go to a local sporting goods store and have a look through different models and brands.

    That's a shame. It sounds like your focus wheel has more play than my pair has. On mine it isn't really play, as the focus does change during that wheel movement. It's just a period of very little resistance.

    Vortex Crossfire good color? 😂 What is your reference...

  • @bigtb1717

    @bigtb1717

    9 ай бұрын

    The reference is what I see without binoculars. Basically, when I'm evaluating color, I'm just looking for a color cast due to varying transmissions. Not all lens coatings will transmit all wavelengths of light equally. This can lead to a color shift when looking through binoculars. Some will make things look slightly more yellow, red, blue, green, etc. I've looked through some binoculars that caused distinct color shifts. I say a pair of binoculars has good color when it doesn't seem to cause a color shift, or only a very minor one.

  • @bigtb1717

    @bigtb1717

    9 ай бұрын

    Or are you just saying the Vortex Crossfire don't have good color? Sorry, maybe that's all you meant. If so, my reference is other binoculars in that price range. They certainly aren't the best, but they aren't too bad for the price.
