Von Ribbentrop's Secret British House
On the edge of London, on a quiet tree-lined road stands Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop's former house, built on his orders in 1936-37 as a weekend retreat when he was German Ambassador to Britain. It is little changed from Ribbentrop's day.
A great many thanks to Philip Gardiner for kindly photographing Ribbentrop's former house, without whose kind assistance this video could not have been made.

A classic and well-known example ofJoachim von Ribbentrop's buffoonery took place in Durham Cathedral, in 1936. As the organist struck up the hymn 'Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken' in the version that is identical to the German national anthem. Thinking it was a nod to his visit, Ribbentrop stood up and gave the Nazi salute. His host, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry had to ask him to sit down (no doubt pulling on his right arm).

Mark Felton always comes up with some very interesting stories. He has an exceptional way of telling the story which I find is quite enjoyable. This one is no exception. Keep bringing us these interesting and informative stories Mark.
I already posted this on Dr. Feltons call for assistance concerning this video, but in case someone is interested in a tiny bit more background knowledge: Ribbentrops grandson was my doctor for the first fifteen years of my life. My grandmother actually knew his mother (ribbentrops daughter, dont know which one though) quite well. She still tells stories about her being proud of being one of Hitlers favorite childrens and with how much authority she delegated random people around. She must have been quite the character. Her son though (my ex doctor) was, and hopefully still is, a very warm, welcoming and friendly person
In the 1960’s when visiting my Uncle who lived in Pinner, Middlesex with my parents. He showed us Ribbentrop’s House. To me it didn’t really mean anything at the time. The style of the house is very similar to many houses of the era found in Berlin, in particular in Dahlem. Unfortunately the architect was not mentioned. Some that have built similar to the style are Fritz August Breuhaus (de Groot) and another being Bruno Paul.
My ex wife and myself viewed the property late 80s when it was offered for sale. It was very reasonably priced as the economy was as today, in a slump and interest rates high. It did indeed have a swastika at the entrance. The eventual buyers when remodelling stripped back the false walls and staircase coverings (possibly added when the RAF used it) to find ornate swastika motif railings and other symbols and carvings. I seem to remember it was actually still owned by the Wesr German government? Who just wanted shot of the place. And if memory serves when they looked in the garage after buying the Property, Ribbontropps Maybach official car came with the property as no one had bothered to go in there before the sale? Now there's one that got away.

Re Ribbentrop getting his von, when living in Germany back in the 80s, it was not uncommon for my Dutch toponym last name of Van Zandt to be misheard as von Zandt. When members of the older generation heard it this way, they would often ask, "Sind Sie Adliger, Herr von Zandt?" or are you a nobleman, Mr. Van Zandt? This would happen with such regularity that one day I replied. "Ja, ich bin ein amerikanischer Adliger. Ich bin lesens- und schreibensfähig." This translates to "I'm an American nobleman. I can read and write." Needless to say, this quip raised a few eyebrows.

a [Nazi] Waffen-SS officer who served and was decorated [by the Nazis] in World War II. Seems to me the dominant tone in this channel is the fight against, not the fight of, the Nazis. And when the latter is discussed, it's generally in the context of the former. The ideas to build a new anti-democratic class-society and attempts to install a new mythology, to implement a new variant of old Sparta's failed social model, to think that one people must rule the world, and there is no place for other values and norms, to think that human lives are worthless, are not surprising after millennia of a feudal ruling class in a conspiracy with clergy, basically with comparable values. Only, the "afterlife" got replaced by the honour of dying as a hero for the system under leadership of a new talking/preaching class that would not stand a chance in the battlefield themselves, but precisely know how to convince their subjects in losing their lives in there. There is no honour in that model. Exceptional courage would have been to resist all that, rather than doing what was expected by low-life criminals. And not being able to see through the fairy tales raises the suspicion of limited intellect.

After his ambassadorship, Ribbentrop was Foreign Minister for seven years. Hitler noted that while his other advisers were cautious and he had to "blow them up," R always went for the most extreme position so H could relax. The Nuremberg Tribunal found him guilty on four counts: crimes against peace, planning a war of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity. He played a large part in the Anschluss and the invasions of Czechoslovakia and Poland. He facilitated the "Final Solution." Thank you for your very informative background on von Ribbentorp. As an aside may I indulge you, and your viewers, with the story of my grandfather's efforts on behalf of both of the warring sides of WW2. His name is William Preiswerk and he was the military attache at the Swiss embassy in London. From the outset of war, the Swiss moved their remaining diplomatic corps into the evacuated German Embassy. My grandfather took over Ribbentorp's office. Throughout the war he flew with the RAF to neutral Lisbon, from there to Spain, across the Pyrennees - coercing on his way a farmer to using his horse and cart. He would then meet army officers of the Wehrmacht to discuss the treatment of Allied POWs, (whether they were receiving Red Cross parcels) on an airfield grass apron in occupied Europe. Return to London and go about following up on the welfare of Italian POWs held in the UK. His Swiss diplomatic passport, with so many visa stamps in it, is a testimony to this very dangerous logistical mission(s) - the welfare of POWs on both sides. He was also witness to the aftermath of the Katyn Woods massacre. When he learned of the final surrender of the Nazi regime, he went into his (sequestered) office, and broke into Ribbentorp's cache of vintage wine stored there, uncorked the best and toasted the Allied victory. The Swiss neutral ? Not in my grandfathers case. He got a CBE for his efforts, and kept very quiet about it, sadly.
Thank you Mark Felton, my favorite Historian!!
I've heard clips of Von Ribbentrop speaking English, and he was wholly proficient. Very fluid without an overwhelming accent.
Thank you for this video Mr. Felton for clarifying exactly why that flag was used because I know a lot of people will be triggered, and wondering why it was used on British soil.
What detail. Fabulous.Thanks.
Superb content as always Mr Felton!
I sure wish we could have seen inside this place! Fascinating, as always Mark, thanks!

I continue to be fascinated by this channel. Although it was a frightful, dark, time in History, your videos give surprising new facts to me and I’ll watch them several times. I appreciate all the work which goes into your work. Brilliant.
Another wonderful and informative documentary . Thank you !!!
Fascinating - Thank You 🙂
You never cease to amaze Dr.Felton! Great video!
Thx Dr Mark!! Well Done!! Cheers JJ
Always enjoy your videos. So many are offbeat and with intriguing info.
Nice presentation Mark. I noticed that in the current photo of Kingswood, the lower story shades were pulled so as to keep "prying eyes" from looking in. An expensive place to live in.
Love to know if this is the house where Ribbentrop was alleged to have been bedding Wallis Simpson. The dates match up.

Apparently, WS might also have 'entertained' JvR at the London apartment she shared with her husband, Ernest. She certainly hosted Edward, Prince of Wales at that location, sometimes with her husband present in another room (nothing salacious - Ernest was prepared to turn a blind, knowing Edward was their main source of funds).

A biography of Wallis Simpson - “That Woman” by Anne Sebba (2011) - states that there was no affair between Ribbentrop and WS.

@@markroycroft unless Anne Sebba had access to the files held on the whole WS/Abdication/Marburg files that are being held under an extended 100 years rule, she would not have been in a position to state categorically either way. The fact is, none of us are likely to know with 100% certainty as we'll all be long gone before the files are made public, if indeed they ever are. However, although they couldn't get conclusive proof, the security services were 'rather sure' there was more to the relationship than just 'meeting at cocktail receptions' coincidences. One thing portrayed in The Crown in the episode on Marburg is correct: they started restricting what went into Edward VIIIths red box everyday as they were convinced early on (later proved correct) that classified and secret information contained within was 'reaching sources for which it was not intended'.
Sir you have excelled yourself again, Thank you.
Great topic and there were some things I wonder about him. Thanks Dr Mark Felton

Thank you sir once again, more insights!
Nice research!
Quite possible that you may find such a villa in Munich's "Speckgürtel", but it's as foreign here as in North London: The architecture is very Hanseatic.
What a very chilling side to life, some people create, and having been born in 1946,to an Italian POW father, into extreme poverty that was mainly the result of 2 world wars, many chilling experiences have been part of my life to date. But I'm glad to be on the opposide side of anyone who's power crazed at any cost to the lives of others. And as I'm somewhat spiritually aware, I dread to think of what people like Hitler and Goring would have to face up to after death. Thanks for your interesting video's. God Bless 🙏🏻💖
Thanks for the video
Point of order, Mark... Ribbentrop arrived to take up his position in October 1936, formally presenting his credentials to Edward VIII on the 30th - not to George VI

Good point. Edward VIII would have appreciated being greeted with a straight-armed salute. There are videos here showing him (as Prince of Wales) teaching the salute to his nieces Elizabeth and Margaret.
I believe his sentence at the Nuremberg trials was rather harsh, I don't think he warranted the death sentence, this would have been something Stalin would have done. Just like Lord Ha Ha, neither one actually got their hands dirty with war crimes, their sentences were more of a knee jerk grudge reaction. Von Ribbentrop was a diplomat, granted not well loved, but the nation of Germany's chief diplomat.

Ribbentrop also tried 3 different times during the war (1942-1945) to begin peace negotiations with the Allies but whenever he advanced the projects he was blocked by Hitler from continuing. An especially interesting peace attempt was in Stockholm in the spring of 1943, the initial work was started on peace with Stalin.
This is so new to me. Thank you
You never hear about things like this yet they're so good at providing background ❤
The Germans really knew how to design and put together such a fantastic range of uniforms. Even today, the uniforms look so stylish and ultimately very impressive!

Interesting vid Mark. New one on me thanks for posting.
First time I hear about Ribbentrop worked for the Molson’s in Montréal! Nice job Mark to let us know about this fact! This Ribbentrop was f** well connected!
Apparently there used to be a framed signed letter from Von Ribbentrop on the wall in a Wine Merchants in Carmarthen. I have no idea where the letter is now.
Hey Dr. Felton. Great video as usual. Looking forward for a biography on SA Chief Ernst Rohm.
His son Rudolf von Ribbentrop was educated at Westminster school in central London. My grandfather recalled him as an arrogant piece of work who was driven around in the German embassy limo!
i love watching your videos
