Volvo XC90 Executive Subwoofer Installation Odyssey (with Focal 1.350 Amp)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Adding Factory XC90 Subwoofer with Focal 1.350 Sub Amp. This is because it's not possible to do a Factory Install of an XC90 Subwoofer to the premium audio system on my car 2009-10 Executive Model ... i.e. the M.O.S.T. optical system does not have a software options for the sub install... just ain't possible.
So the work-around is to drive the sub with an aftermarket sub amp, and since there are no line level outputs, we can use the speaker levels inputs to read a signal from the speaker wires..
What I like about the Focal FD1.350 amp is it's small enough to locate next to the battery, and it has a variable phase adjustment dial though actually I only needed to set to 180 out of phase for optimum sound.
Also the amp is about 2x the power rating of the speaker, so I have used on 20A fuse in the line from the battery to sub amp. Also the speakers are 3 ohm, but the amp says it requires a min of 4 ohm in the dual coil config, but I don't think this is an issue since the amp is well powerful enough and would only be damaged if driving a less than 4ohm speaker very hard.... which won't happen.

I know this video is old now but I suspect people will still stumble across it so first of all thank you for this information was super handy, however like one of the other commenters my amp didn't like the voltage modulation from the rear lights, if your reading this and having the same problem, fuse slot 25 in the rear fuse box is only active when key is in position 2 and running, perfect for remote if your amp doesn't like the pwm from the rear lights

I've already seen this video being linked on Volvo forums! One difference I had to make was to add a 4.7uF capacitor between the grey lighting cluster wire and ground to smooth out the PWM regulating the voltage to the lighting cluster. On one amp it worked fine, on another it required the capacitor for the amp to stay on once the alternator started charging the battery. Volvo uses PWM to maintain a constant 12.xx V to the lightbulbs to extend their life. Using an oscilloscope confirmed that the PWM was the culprit.

Thanks. That’s a really useful addition which did not affect my case with the focus amp, but seem like in your case was an issue... i confess, if I had run into trouble like this, I would have been a bit slumped...

Hi, I have the next gen 2016 XC90 and wondered what the options are to retrofit an Volvo Sub in the rear storage area of the car (where the factory fitted unit is installed) are the original wiring looms there and when installing it can you update the software on the centre drivers screen to show the sub on the tone settings? Cheers

  • @cleaneraz09

I think it should be possible to use subwoofer internal amplifier, you just need to overpass the optical input by checking what (possibly tda) chip is used and soldering separate input cable.

I am not at all sure this is right. You need the software in the head unit to have a sub option, digital crossover etc.. if this was the case, I think the sub would have probably worked. I think without this, messing around with the sub amp chips is a lost cause..

idiocratease ah yes, you are right. I was talking more about only the posibility to use the same amplifier, but yes, input and all peripherials would still be necessary. I have a powerful subwoofer in my xc90, however since it takes quarter of my trunk I think it’s time to change it into the original one. I have my inputs taken with high/low converter, also I have taken it directly from the original amp which has TB2912HQ chip so it was not that hard to solder few cables to take an analog signal. Works ok but it was better with the high/low converter because i can easily control the gain level (my amp has no remote gain control). My question: was it hard to place a subwoofer into its original location? Any challenges? I have now a 400w rms sub with ported 100l box for 33hz, but how does a original sub perform? Thanks for quick response:)

Hello and thank you for the great explanation.. but I have a question. I own a volvo xc90 r-design 2014 withe premium sound, but I would like to buy an original subwoofer and I do not know if my car supports its installation or not, knowing that there is something under the seat next to the driver, I do not know what it is

I don’t know. My guess, like I found with my car, is that you cannot re-code a subwoofer into the system (even when linked properly via the optical cables). So probably a solution like I have done is the best option. You could also just pull a speaker wire and splice it into a subwoofer with built in amplification and high level inputs. E.g. JBL BassPro SL2 Active Underseat Car

As far as I recall, you need to take a couple of screws out of the plastic headliner (rear roof). Then the side panels pull away. They are on poppers

Why it's not possible to do a Factory Install of an XC90 Subwoofer on 2009? Even if you have factory harness from another car?

  • @idiocratease

    @idiocratease

I dont know the precise answer to this, but I guess because the software recognizes the hardware and knows this system is not configured with a sub. So like trying to install a 64bit program on a 32bit OS, does not compute. What is sure is that it is not possible irrespective of what you might read. I paid £50 at a volvo garage to try it.

@@idiocratease I know it's possible when you 1)install original sub 2)put an orignal harness with +12V and optical fiber 3)activate it on radio software through authorised service. It's definitely possible with XC90 till ~MY2007, where sub was just factory option. I'm trying to ascertain if the same is possible with XC90 2008-2013.

1.55 into the video it covers how the 2 coils was wired. Amp has 2 sets of terminals for wiring 2 separate speakers to, so I wired one coil to one, and the other to the other set of terminals. I am not sure if this is ultimately parallel, or dual mono... but that’s what it was...
