We have had our XC40 recharge duel motor for 12 months now and we could not be happier, we average 21 kwh per 100km so you're spot on with the consumption. I have a smile on my face everytime I drive it. I have solar pannels and a 11kw charger. Driving an electric car requires some planning, however once you you get your head around it there's no issue.

Great review, but something must be known: The 0-100km test has being done incredibly wrong, because it was done when the failsafe “you are running of charge and won’t be able to use all the power” mode was activated. When you are running out of charge, a beige arch begins to appear and grow on the right hand part of the tachometer, where the power used is shown. As you can see from your own video, the arch started to appear, meaning that the car will start to be slower and will no be able to use all its power until you have more than very little charge you had.

Bullshit comment. He makes it in 4.6 seconds which is exactly what Volvo has in the specs.

Just got mine a few weeks ago - the 2023 model, not the 2024 one. I agree, it’s a great car, but I am a little bit disappointed by the range. Now, I’m a city driver, so it’s not that much of an issue for me. I do have to go on a roadtrip from Brisbane to Rockhampton, and I’m a bit concerned, but I’ve done such a trip in a Tesla and that was not an issue - so I doubt it will be an issue for the XC40, as I plan to stop and recharge 4 times during the trip (just like I did with the Tesla, to be on the safe side). It handles well, it accelerates really fast, I love the safety features and it’s very comfortable. Overall, I’m very happy with it. It’s just that range issue. It is a bit worrying when I see it drop from 90% to 85% after not driving all that far, to be honest. I’ve driven both the Tesla Model 3 and the XC40 - I prefer the XC40. Sure, the Tesla might accelerate a bit faster (not really in my opinion, but apparently it can get to 100km/hr a fraction of a second faster) and it does handle better (not by much), but the XC40 has a far better view, it’s easier to get in and out of, and I don’t have to goddamn look to my left every bloody time I want to check my speed. Seriously, what the hell was up with that decision by the Tesla designers? It’s one of the main reasons I went with an XC40 after using my Brother’s Tesla.

back storage is only calculated to seat height. Volvo is the only one that does this. I guess its because the cover which is removable, then allows you to store more stuff and increase the litres a great deal.

Great video. Lots of reviews index so hard on efficiency and range as if we’re all making cross country road trips in our EVs on the reg. Yours offered a viewpoint much closer to how I think about the car experience. Thanks!

the small hinged-lid box at the front of the armrest is a waste/rubbish bin - not a sunglasses holder. Had mine over a month and an excellent car.

2024 have really improve the range and efficiency of the XC40 recharge with 17.4KWH per 100KM (2023 was 21.3KWH/100KM) and range has been increase to 520KM (larger Battery and more efficiency)! Do not forget the Active turning Matrix LED Headlights on the Ultimate, these and the Polestar are some of the best in the industry!

I've driven a few volvos and had this one recently. Impressive acceleration at virtually any speed, meant overtaking on Motorways and Dual carriageways was rapid, really rapid. The only one to compare was the Tesla I drove a little while back. Inside and Outside the Volvo quality was excellent.

The lock button on the hatch is a great idea, I wish I had one. I'm surprised it's not on more cars. I'd like to see Volvo make an EV from the ground up that is just a little bit bigger than this with a little more range. The horsepower is impressive.

Really good review. Better than the car which has one deal-breaker for me, the range. I test drove a model Y yesterday which had about 500km range plus of course SC access Also surely volvo could have made the effort to remove the rear transmission tunnel hump?

Thanks for uploading the great video. This is the car I'm planning to get. I love everything but one thing about it - the interior choices are terrible, to me. They are not offering it in leather, at least in the US, and the leather like materials are very dark. I'll be choosing the gray wool but its settling, not choosing because I want it. My wife's XC90 light brown nappa leather is the best and it should of been available for this.

Chris it was interesting watching the tow bar being shown as Volvo Geelong tell me that the flip out tow bar does not meet Australian standards and that a Hayman Reese fixed tow package was what would be delivered. Did you have actually have a car with the flip out tow or was that just video footage?

Great review, interesting Kris Rifa over on his Norwegian KZread channel shows that medium and steady with great battery conditioning (no brainier with the Volvo) wins the race against a Ionic 5 AWD Long range on a long drive race, go figure. Seems Volvo have done a far better job on the software than Hyundai could ever! I on the other hand have taken delivery of a 2023 Ionic 5 AWD Long range top trim back in October, and it doe snot Fast DC Charge, in the shop for the 4th time at least I have a Ionic 5 loaner. Should have bought the Volvo XC40 recharge Ultimate AWD I had my eyes on. I cannot drive to visit my Mom in Alberta, I live near Vancouver BC. Big thing here in North America Tesla has started to open up their fast chargers to CCS cars and Volvo and Polestar have the charging port on the same location as all Tesla's, great Volvo we can use these Tesla chargers just like a Tesla, great charging speed on the 2024 long range at 200KW charge speed!

And it will be rear wheel bias, in other word, it will have bigger motor in the rear, even the singel motor will have the motor in the rear , not like today in front and a lot longer range, it will be more interesting cars both xc40 and c40.

Nice review! Your decibel measurements show that the XC40 is considerably quieter than the Tesla. Assuming that for every 3db noise increases by a factor of 2, the stationary noise would be 1/4 of the Tesla, while at other speeds almost 1/8 the noise of the Tesla.

Info was from Volvo Australia (car was a media loaner). I completely understand the differences between European, Australian (or insert X market here). They all have different specs because of localised requirements (read: must include a tyre, run flat kit, vs nothing at all).

Are these a ripoff? Base PHEV is $62k. Base EV is $87k. I know there's some additional packaging for the EV, but $25k worth? Ouch! BMW seem to almost have price parity between ICE and EV versions.

Test drove an XC40 before buying my Model Y. My conclusion after the test drive was that the technology (battery, motors) used by Volvo was simply years behind Tesla and felt very much like a version 1 release, or a first stab at the EV market space.
