I was just stuck in a parking lot and searched up this video. Thank you dearly for the help! My only suggestion would be to not even take off that shroud and just hit the exposed portion of the lockout with a hammer or rachet or whatever you have. That's what got me out of my bind with no tools!

Thanks for this brilliant video mate. Just fixed the same problem. It didn’t work straight away when I started tapping it, but I was using the head of the screwdriver. Perseverance paid off, so if anybody else tries fixing it, don’t give up, just keep tapping. Thanks again mate. 👍🏻

Thanks worked for me, after I did ghis I noticed that this can be done without removing steering cover. Basically once release the column adjacent lock you will be able to tap on the locking mechanism, this should work easier. Thanks again.

On the XC60 you can actually see the unit through the hole where the steering wheel adjuster is. You can tap it through there.

I will add- let you car sit out in the sun as well. The extra heat produced inside the car will help with getting the grease around the pin less viscous.

you really need to take it off and spray some wd40 in it to free it up, theres stuff smeared in it thats like thin white grease that sort of hardens up with time, wd40 softens it up again though same will happen at some point in 10plus years again tbh

If it still doesn't work and you need to use the car there are 2 ways. Attach a cable to the starter motor and then with the key in the car touch the battery and the car will start. If you want another way you could take a cable to the inside of the car and use the lighter port and make a button. Push the button, then the electricity will transfer to the starter motor and start the engine. It is a simple temporary solution for the problem. To fix it if it doesn't work anymore will cost you atleast 500 euro at a volvo mechanic. Or if you have another source get an emulator for 200 euro and it still works.

Unfortunately the screws under my wheel seem to be stripped, (2007 just purchased used.) Would it be stupid to bounce the wheel up and down to achieve the same affect? I hear the Volvo repair places are insanely expensive.

that did the trick, from now on I'm keeping a hammer in my trunck, thanks. should I expect the problem to comeback? Noticed I already have hammer taping marks from previous owners, plus I've got custom crank button that bypass this message(guess it was installed to avoid this problem) I would've lubed up the thing but those ungrippable bolts are in the way, need a mini grinder machine to help unscrew them.

@peter6064 last week I disassembled that thing and lubed it. For the screws I used a small metal saw to cut a slit into it. It's a bit tricky since it's a tight space. However the screws are quiet tightened so make sure you cut deep enough for your bit to get grip. I had to tap the second screw with a chisel to turn it. Because I destroyed the slit. If you've taken it of, have a close look to the black plastic piece. You can remove it but there is a spring. It can be assembled in 2 positiones, one will block the mechanism so make sure you don't do that. For reassembling you have to bring the small plate behind the the nose sticking out in the bottom. I cleaned everything with a bit of wd40 and then sprayed some ballistol into the mechanism. Runs much smoother now. And for getting the thing back into position, I used 10mm M6 screws

I purchased a new one. Drilled out the tabs that lock it together. I swapped the control board from the old one to the new one. The board is the part that has to be programmed to the car. I wrapped mine up placed it under the dash. The new one will jam once in a long while. I can however tap it in order to unstick it. It is a very poor design. The motor is the part that will give out eventually and leave you stranded. I replaced the motor in mine at about 210000 miles. The new one should last the life of the car.
