I am restoring my Sugga, have owned it since 1980 and not used it for 20 years, so a very major "service" was required and I have, as always happens, found myself doing a lot more than I anticipated. Having watched this excellent video, my blood is running faster and my enthusiasm to finish my job is growing. A very good description of the vehicle.

I’m not surprised they’re so popular with collectors, I’d love to have one they look great!
OMG I love how swedes keep their museum vehicles with working and mounted MG's, breaches and radios working.
At first, when comparing this channel with e.g the Bovington Tank Museum, I thought this channel was a bit boring and not to the same standard. But now, after a number of videos Stefan has got his own thing going and I like it more and more for every episode! More details, test drives and history behind the different vehicles. I have to admit that a visit to Arsenalen is climbing higher and higher on my bucket list. Great channel, keep it coming!
I love the sound of old Volvo engines. Brings me back to when me and my friend used to tinker and drive his 242 with the B18 on his parents big field at their country house.
I think this vehicle looks so cool. Like a giant offroad Volkswagen Beetle :D

There's a reason that it was called 'suggan' (sugga is the fertile she-pig that is called 'sow' in many countries). The dimensions isn't perfect but you don't need much imagination to see the wide arse push the snout through brushes and mud. It looks stable and fertile 😁
Me: Mom, I've bought a Volvo. Mom: That's a nice sensible car. :) What a wonderful thing.
That has to be one of the most awesome vehicles Volvo ever built
Luv it, I was in a signal unit we had Land Rover 110 FFR fitted for radio I can tell being a radio operator sitting in the back for hours on end is far from relaxing but is very busy.
This was a very nice showcase of the designer learning from the first project and making an excellent second vehicle
You can see why collectors love this car. Its a beauty. Once again i am a little late to the party and the prices are already too high for me, but… 🥰.
It's always nice to see the old equipment get taken out once in a while. Listen to those gears! It's always cool to learn the evolution of a design and how they got there.

These have to be the most beautiful vehicles Volvo has ever built - and there are a couple of beautiful cars by Volvo! I'm German and I apologize for the terrible seats. My back started aching the moment I saw you sitting in the driver's seat.

I don't think it looks beautiful but it does look functional for that time. Sweden has always prioritized the survival of the soldiers/crew but comfort wasn't seen as more than something you could handle if needed. Something like 'do you want to walk or ride uncomfortable'.
Kul! Gamla "Suggan" är en klar favorit. Nu väntar vi på "valparna".

Lovely video. The more I watch the Arsenalen videos, the more the museum's collection looks like an operational unit with its recce and command vehicles, tanks, TDs and supply train that could spring back to life at any moment if needed. That, to me, makes the Arsenalen the benchmark for most other museums. I look forward visiting it sometime in the future.

Fascinating vehicle. I started my military career as a signaller in the British RA. I would have loved to have been deployed in this truck, in some style. Much nicer than a landrover, ferret or a saxon. Great video.
Great video. Thanks! What really makes these videos is the love and respect Stefan obviously has for these old warhorses.
Such a beautiful car, I wish we made more classic builds like this
What a lovely vehicle, I didn't expect to like it. I love the detail and proportions, what a treat. Great sound.
Remember modified versions of these still running in off-road competitions when I was a kid. Such cool vehicles, loved Suggan since then

Stefan you seem to be thoroughly enjoying yourself driving that. Couldn't help myself smiling.
The open window on night moves helps keep the crew awake as well.
Thank you for another entertaining and informative video.
Wonderful video. I regret not purchasing one back in 2000. Now they are super expensive :( cheers.
Side valve engines have a lovely torque curve. Another Volvo to add to my wish list 😍. Thanks for sharing 👍
Great presentation of a great vehicle...thank you
Stefan, greetings from Ukraine! Thanks for such a interesting video)
Great video, and a great car! A friend used to have a Terrängsugga a long time ago, with the original engine, and he said it was thirsty as heck. Maybe a reason for people swapping it out, to save on petrol? By the way, I love it that the current vehicle in the Swedish armed forces is called Galten (The Boar), as this earlier vehicle was called Suggan (The Sow). A nod to the one who came before.
what a lovely vehicle, would be very nice to own one of these
Amazing!! Really smooth engine...
That is so cool. They thought of everything. That Morse code key on the radio seems like it would have been useful when reception was poor.
En riktig pärla.en sådan skulle man ha!
Great video, Stefan. Thank you.
skulle verkligen vara glad om jag fått köra den en gång
Tack så mycket, bra film
Yeah, the name, Suggan. The Sow. It was apparently not meant as a bad thing. The cab was borrowed from a civilian rear axle drive Volvo car, often used as a taxi. And also as a school bus. And when the car stopped, and lots of tiny school kids jumped out, people thought it looked like a sow giving birth to lots of piglets. So it was really the civilian car that had the nickname Suggan, the Sow. But the military version got the name too. I don't know for sure if this story is true, but it might.

Never heard that one, but it sounds as a plausible explanation. I often went to school in a Sugga, and later was among the latest to use the military version, in 1974-75. Fun car to drive, better offroad capability than the later Valpen. Also steadier on the road, and much less noise in the cabin. Top speed ~105 km/h.
Amazing vehicle!
What an excellent vehicle!
Again, awesome episode. Haven't seen/heard about these before. Was interesting to learn. Really like the design. Thank you.
I'm not super into terrain vehicles, BUT i would absolutely *love* to own a Sugga
Excellent video good explanation one day i may come visit Sweden when this covid surreal life subsides !
A very beautiful vehicle !
An US motor reporter visiting a Swedish off road event thought this vehicle was custom built and not stock. I can understand that thought, because it look a litle wierd with a that car body at a 4x4 truck chassie. It's also interesting that chassie with the front end of the body was a Volvo standard for many variants of Volvo military cars/trucks from that time.
Always love these Videos. A very fun vehicle, indeed.
What a neat, well designed vehicle. Thanks for showing too us.
Really enjoyed this vid - not as much as Stefan, but I saw a TP 21 years ago in Germany and was still keen on some more information, thanks.
Thanks, another very interesting video.
great video! thanks
The Rptb 915 is quite popular not only amongst collectors but also in the swedish offroad community. I've seen a number of them rebuilt with V8 engines and huge swamp tires. Looks awesome. Edit: 11:25 yeah I shouldn't have commented so early, of course Stefan mentioned just that.
I´m happy to see also the expert have some problem with smooth shifting. The highest gear is the one I have some trouble with in my 912. The front is very much "sow" only that 912 has 6wd. It has been sitting for some years, lost my braking power back then. This summer I really have to take care of my pearl. And -no not for sale.
So nice i loved

Lovely looking vehicle. Volvo style. Crash gearbox needs a so called double-declutch technique. 😀
Wow that is cool.
Wow what a neat vehicle. Like the size and chassis style ..Probably almost all of em produced still run . As has been said in many mechanic shops worldwide for many years. ." it'll run forever with proper maintenance it's a Volvo " ..
The civilian prototyp looks quite similar to the Willys Wagon of the same era.
Drömbilen för mig som radioamatör 😍

I saw it in the museum 2 years ago. Cool museum and cool car.
When I was a kid there was a guy driving this as a civil car in my hometown. I thought it was very cool... I wonder what happened to it.

Mycket bra och pedagogiskt att ni började historieberättelsen med TPV m/43. Som motornörd saknar jag dock mer data om motorn, exempelvis dess cylindervolym och vilken fordonsmodell den ursprungligen är hämtad ifrån.
It is interesting that these vehicles are left hand drive but built when Sweden drove on the left (pre-1967). Did the Swedish military drive LHD vehicles due to the supply of their other types being from the US and Germany etc?

Super video, very enjoyable. I own a Sugga in England but am having trouble finding parts. Is there any help you can give me to find spares please. Robert
By far the Coolest looking vehicle ever built. It's a shame there were so few made. I'd love to own one but they almost never become available.. I think I've seen one come up for auction in about the last 10 years... and that was at an eye-watering price.. Out of interest, does anyone know what the Swedish army replaced them with?
@boek2777
11 ай бұрын
I have no idea if they were replaced or just scraped as yesterday's need (no updated crossbows in use nowadays). My guess is that radios became so portable that this type of transports became outdated. My oldest brother rode in a standard Volvo Amazon with military paint around 1974 (they did have sirens). The car contained one driver/sniper/medic, one suppressor (small machine gun with a huge magazine) and two radio opporarors with attack dogs and kpistar (kpist= m/45 in English). He and his teem responded to alerts from several tiny military airforce instillations alerts (the sound of a hangarhund reacting/ a military dog trained to kill on sight, becoming agreesive). They were always on the move so they used speed to be effective/be in the right place. With more powerful and portable radios you didn't have to climb a mountain to send a message. Radio cars wasn't needed!
I am surprised that there were no 'running boards' !
What type/name of tyre does this monster on? It fits so well with rugged and beasty looks, amazing too.
Interesting that this vehicle had front axle diff lock, but its successor the 903-series doesn't. Anybody know why? Also I'd like to see a video presenting that halftrack mentioned early on.
Excellent exhibits! It would be great to actually show the radios on occasion because many of today's children don't realize how big and heavy they used to be in those days.
Get me one of each - after I win the Powerball.

Unimog U1300 and Unimog U1700 have the same setup. When you rotate the wheels you have to remove and refit tyres. I did it once with a U1700 at the local main camp motor pool with their big hydraulic tyre shop machine. I would not care to do it with tyre levers on those wheels.

The thing is, Volvo cars has been split off from the rest of the company. They only have the brand name in common. But Yeah, I think Volvo's appeal as a rugged, reliable and well-engineered utility veichle is far greater than that of a luxury car, however well built. They should have gone for something like a Hilux/Pajero/KingCab back in the nineties when Volvo's were built to withstand a nuclear war.
Suggan = Något av det coolaste man kan hitta på fyra hjul.
