My wife's XC70 had the strut problem and I said to myself, " I bet volvosweden has a KZread on this." You are the best!

@VolvoSweden- Always love watching your videos and learning from them. This is another repair I wouldn't have been able to do without your detailed installation video. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and help us all.
Thank you so much for this video! I did this tonight on my wife's 2008 V70 and everything went perfectly. I had put off doing this for a long time because I thought it was going to be a real pain but it was actually quite simple following your directions. Cheers!
Awesome video- straight to the point, no waffle and all the important bits covered, thank you 👌
Excellent video. I replaced booth Gas strut shocks today. Without this video/information I had not manager to replace them. My Volvo xc70 With 360 000 km on the odometer needed this replacement. Many Thanks.
Perfect instructions.....I have a 2010 XC70 and it worked great...it turned out that only my right strut was expired....so, after I fixed that one, I did not want to push my luck....and, everything re-assembled perfectly. That is a rare occurrence for me. LOL Thanks again for doing this!
I just did both struts on my XC60 2012 T6 using some info from your videos that was very helpful. Mine are a lot easier to get to and replace. It has fixed the same issue you had - but they don't open the tailgate as far. (A few inches shorter) I suspect I need a POT code update as using newer lifters - but dreading the dealer visit so living with it. Thanks for the great videos.
Great video! Thank you very much! The dealer wanted to charge me over $500. I bought the parts online (using VIN as suggested) and saved me hundreds. I replaced both cylinders. For those considering replacing their struts, I used a standard screwdriver to release the catches on my 2015 XC70 T6. It worked fine, but I'm sure not as efficient as the nice, custom tool in the video. You just have to release it by feel. The right side was more difficult to release the catch for removal just because the cylinder is larger in diameter and getting the screw driver at the right angle to undo the catch took some trial and error. The left side was easier to remove, but a little harder to install. Once I secured the front of the left cylinder, I found the cylinder needed to be compressed a little in order to fit the piston end of the cylinder onto the boss. To do this, I used the handle end of a medium-sized adjustable wrench. The hole in the handle did a good job of containing the ball end of the cylinder while I levered the wrench handle against the opening in the frame to compress the cylinder and slide it onto the boss. Then just moving the catch to lock it on.

Hey Steven, I just did this on my 2015 xc70 too. To my surprise the left shock was much skinnier than the right one. Also, the left side has a seemingly unreplaceable electric actuator. Have you attempted to replace that too?
Thanks! I was able to replace these struts in about an hour with no issues. Great video!
Thanks so much for this video! Just replaced two struts on my 2013 XC70, and it took about 90 minutes following this guidance. Getting the clips off the front ends of the struts is a bit difficult; I used a small flathead screwdriver and did it mostly by feel. One important note: If you do NOT have a powered liftgate, both struts are the same (I used Stabilus parts, which are identical to the Volvo struts I removed). There are a lot of people commenting about having different struts on the left and right - I assume that's because they have a powered liftgate.

Depending on your VIN you might have two different struts so it is important to check.
Excellent Video! Very informative and you cover all the steps to do closely. I have a 2009 XC T6 and the power tailgate is starting to slowly come down after opening. Initially only when the car was at an angle, but now sometimes parked level. It will be in the Spring as Winter is approaching. Only genuine Volvo parts too! Thanks so much for the help, I will be following this video closely when I have to do it too! I have used your videos to repair other issues on my car and all have been easy and informative to follow, thanks again 👍
Good video. Thank you. Just replaced mine two struts. Those catches are a pain to remove. Ended up using a short screwdriver to pushing them off.
I always want the solution for the tailgate not opening sometimes. I just lacked words to describe it. Now I know. Thank you a bunch
in Germay you can‘t find such a good Mechanik- Man like you...!!!
Thanks for the tip of the tailgate bumpers. I replaced all 4 and the gate is working better. I also had Volvo do a software update which they said may improve the tailgate function.
Excellent! Thank you! It took me 35 minutes after watching this video. My friendly neighborhood Volvo Dealer wanted to charge me 5 hours labor to do it (plus parts, tax, and "environmental fees").

That's why they're called "stealerships"... 😉
I replaced my 2015 xc70 tailgate struts with OEM Stabilus struts (Stabilus makes Volvo struts without the Volvo branding for 30% less cost). The left strut, while same part number as the Volvo oem part number, was tough to insert due to the strut being a little bit longer even with the hatch fully extended open. To get it to fit, I had to clip in the front of the strut first, then use a screwdriver between roof frame and head of strut to slightly compress the strut. Once compressed, it quickly slipped into place. Great instructional video, thanks!
Very helpful. Ordered the new part and took me about 1.5 hours to remove the old ones and get the new ones installed. Hard to see what you're doing fm the back but was able to fit a light inside next to the window, that way I could see were the catch clip has a flat notch to fit a thin flat screw driver to pop the catch. After that it was pretty straight forward.
Thank you. The dealer wanted $376 for this job, cost me $140 for the parts. It took an hour, but very few surprises. To get the 2nd side of the strut on, I need to push up the tailgate to the exact height and crowbar it onto the ball. Nothing too difficult, but would be easier with a helper!
Thanks to this great video I managed to change the gas struts effortlessly, all work was done in an hour. I didn't use original Volvo struts but bought Stabilus 437135 which are exactly the same (Stabilus is OEM Volvo supplier) but cheaper.

UPDATE: My XC70, a 2013, used one of the large supports with the spring on the right, on the left it had a conventional gas cylinder. I was able to easily replace the left hand one without pulling the headliner support up near the rear seat. I did pull it to do the one on the right side. It's great not to have the hatch hitting me in the head any longer.
Thank you so much for this your time and effort has greatly improved my ride and my life. I have a 2008 Volvo XC 70 Japanese import V6. I just want to add. I used a plasterboard ceiling prop to hold up the tailgate, Place it in the middle and make sure it pushes the lid open as far as it goes. I had no resistance removing the two gas springs as when the tailgate is forced to max they just pop off and on with ease. (obviously loosening the spring loaded clips) Secondly I purchased the following BILSTEIN gas struts @t Dont purchase them from Amazon give an independent business your trade. These are half the price of Volvos, Just as good and you can trust them as Febi bilstein make very good gear. My car use to squeak like old floor boards when on anything other than perfect roads. Now its squeak free. Now when i open and close the boot its ghostly silent. Part number 36209 (This could be just UK or Europe though). They say Right side but that a pointless description as you just role them 180 degrees and they fit. So just purchase too of the same.
Thank you very much this video!!! I've just replacement both struts of my Volvo V70 without any problem. ❤
Thank you for this. Great help and even though it took a lot of fighting to get the struts into the knobs, it wasn’t too bad of a project. It’s great to have the lift gate back to new!

Fantastic video as always and really useful as my tailgate has this same issue when opening!
Great video which certainly helped me change my struts very easily!
Great vid! I bought myself a 2011 V70 D5, I already replaced the gasspring in de trunk itself that holds the wooden cover floor. I think that I will replace the tailgate springs as well. Thnx man!

Thank you so much. I also need to replace gas springs of the tailgate.
Nice job, as usual. Thanks for share it with us.
Thank you for a very good video! Very clear and complete.
Dear @volvosweden. My profound thanks for this video. I just did the replacement and it worked perfectly as you described in the video. My garage in Belgium tried to convince me to replace the hydraulics (500 Euro + the cost of work). Now it was just 92,05 for the original part from www.VolvoZone.eu (they checked against my VIN number to send me the correct part). Total cost was 65.05 for the part, 5 handling cost and 22 shipment cost. Tusen tack för en suveränt bra video! Mvh/Kenneth
man you are an awesome source of information. Thank you!
Thanks, just replaced them. Didn’t needed the special tool, a normal flathead screwdriver dit the trick as well.
Thanks! Excellent video as always
Excellent video!!
Excellent! Now do a video for installing/replacing the driver side door lock/cable on a 2008 XC70. Appreciate your guidance.
Nice job man...very good explaining!! Top video
Great DIY video. Thanks!
Note that when you have a XC70/V70 whith an electric opening door, you need two different struts. The left one with a spring around it and the left one without. At the left side a strut with spring wouldn’t even fit, because the connections are not in line but twisted a quarter. At the right side they are in line.
great video guys
These cars are fantastic.
Fab vid;well done .
Thank you so much...I hope I can do this successfully...the Dealer wants $$$$$$$ to do this for me.
Great video as usual.
please can you visit germany an reparier my v70... you are the best car mechanic wich y saw. ..!!!
Hello Juri, thanks for sharing this topic. Next time you experience a failing bump stop you first try placing some washers under the bump stops. This way you can solve the height which is needed to pop-out the tailgate.

Nice video! Thank you!
Many thanks! Just replaced them!
I enjoy the great instructions
This is timely, I need to do this and have dreaded it...
I have already replaced the pieces that you have recommended, but the tailgate with the remote control does not open. He makes an attempt, tries to open up but after a second he closes again. My feeling is that in the opening phase, pushes more towards the left side and the lock hangs during the first shot instead of opening completely. If you help the tailgate with your hands, by taking it on the license plate holder, then the tailgate opens correctly with the remote control
very educative. Thank you
Video for replacing the struts very clear and helpful. What tool can you use to remove the catches?
Excellent instruction. How different is this on my '04 XC70? Neither my '04 nor '12 have the power lift gate. Thanks.
It would be great to see a video when youre upgrading/retrofiting xenon and LED to exterior lights and mybe a LED light bar.
What a Legend!!! Thanks
I recommend starting the repair by adjusting or replacing the rubber bumpers
I had the same hot weather issue in the midwest USA. Was delivering Pizzas out of the back.
hi I replaced the pistons with 2 stabilus as you advised. Now the hatch no longer falls on my head but remains open, finally. However, the automatic opening does not work correctly. Using the key, the tailgate tries to open but after a click closes because on the right side it does not seem to open sufficiently to open the total unlock. Do you have any advice for me? IF I help the tailgate during opening, on the right side, then it opens completely by itself, as it did originally. I want to clarify that a lower rubber is broken, so in closing there is no limit switch. but the profile of the tailgate is in line with the headlights, jackets rests on 3 rubber pads.
Thanks! Super helpful
nicely done great help, thx !
I have XC 70 D5 AWD 2011y. Gas cylinder on left and right side are not indentical. On a right side is cylinder like on your video, with springs, but on a left side is cylinder without a spring.
Is it possible to show the replacement of the actuator on the left side, because that item initiates the opening and closing of the POT. Thx.
you are the best !!!! thanks !!!
That you very much for your tips!!
Can u tell me please how you can close the hatchback with the car key controller?
@volvosweden I enjoy watching and appreciate your videos, they have helped me numerous times. I had a quick question about the gas support struts for the tailgate. When I woke up the parts by my VIN number it only shows the left support strut. Just wondering if their interchangeable or if you ordered a right and lost. Thank you again!
Can the guard be lowered with the load cover in place ?
Hi, many thanks for a great video, I have xc70 2015 cross road model. The car does not have the tailgate lift installed. The tailgate does not have the button for reclosing. My question to you is do you know if the electrical opening&closing can be installed? Do I need a complete new tailgate or can I buy the parts and rebuild the existing one? The car key has the botton of opening the tailgate and also there is button by the steering wheel for the same purpose but nothing happens when pressing them. I guess the lock is purely mechanical.. best regards, Sid
Do you know how to open the unlocked tailgate from inside? My 2008 xc70 has the tailgate stuck and won’t unlock. Can’t believe it can’t be opened manually from inside
Great video! how much time do i have to plan for replacing the dampers? where do you get this special tool?
Спасибо большое друзья! Я точно так и сделал всё как по маслу.
Does it have a hydraulic cylinder plus 2 gas spring struts?
@volvosweden i have the same problem on my 2007 d5 xc70, 220 000 km with hydrolic tailgate. Can you comfirm that the part are the same & if you have to replace both of them ?
Thank you for the video, when you gonna replace the V belt for the same vehicle please? Thank you.
Thank you for your clear instructions. The link to ebay is broken--is there an updated link to the item without springs that saves money?
