Volvo 740 Stereo System Overhaul, Hidden Subwoofer and Head Unit Installation, Sound Deadening.

Back on the wagon... time to make it sound good. I'll show you how to upgrade your Volvo 740's audio while keeping the amplifier, sub and modern head unit hidden.

The speaker in the pocket behind wheel well was an interesting idea. Need a base in my volvo, but i cant have a regular 'box' because of how frequent i use the cargo space. This is a nice solution, thnks!

You know, where you made your Subwoofer? Peter at PSSounds would have DIED and gone to Heaven for that subwoofer location already having been perfect for a I.B ( infinite baffle) configuration. It also would have done wonders for its output as well IMO. Far more efficient and higher output with that kind of setup then a small sealed box. But nonetheless AMAZING JOB!!!!! You fabricated that subwoofer enclosure like a PRO! And KillMat is a Great to work with. Another Fellow Swede (Backman's Garage) recommended you. And I am Glad he DID!

Got curious about the Oem-speaker... 🤔 As I recall, some Volvo's had speakers from Philips. I also read that the head-unit could be a Mitsubishi. I'm not an expert on this, but I had a few 240 wagons, back in the day 😉. As always, watching these videos makes me smile! Thanks! 👍

@@pistolpoppa It's not the English my Dear IKEA Bro. Its more about what kind of signal is sent on those RCA Cables & their construction. Tony from D'amore engineering (Steve Meade's Tech Guru) has a great video about RCA cables and the kind of Sudo Balanced interference rejection used by 99% of car Audio RCA's signal cables used in car audio. (aka, also known as Pre Amp outputs from a head unit). For example, (Please bear with me, cus MAN, Swedish is HARD to translate! 😉 ) Home Audio uses single ended and Balanced connections. Car Audio USE to use the DIN connectors and Mini DIN in the past that was indeed a true balanced signal in the VERY early days of car audio for premium brands. That soon faded out and is only used in Uber High end stuff like ARC Audio and DynAudio when they did indeed make car audio stuff. Along with McIntosh, and a few others. Only a FEW of those brands remain. It was better (READ: *CHEAPER* ) to go with RCA signal cables that used another signal transmission methodology then using fully shielded cables. And it worked just as good.... ( i.e. , Meaning, 99% of the "Consumer's" could not tell the difference ) But it was HIGHLY dependent on the type of Low Level RCA signal cables used. It was then SUDO ratified ( Made commonplace but not an actual standard) by most Car Audio companies to use a differential curcuit on the AMP / Head units internally with basic RCA interconnects. Watch the video, and you will see what I mean and then you will get why its so funny... Here is a video going over it From the Tony MAN himself: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4OVybh9iq-3nqQ.html So if you look at MOST RCA cables you purchase? Almost every single one of them is made for a Differential type signal. But most car audio is indeed single ended. But how many of those RCA cables actually are built in the way where they have actual shield or are coaxial in nature? *Almost none* ! Therefore, the amount of noise transmitted in Car Audio is sort of an inside Joke. The reason being is that as long as you don't hear Alternator WHINE? People are FINE. (I wonder if that Rhymes when you translate that to Swedish? 🙂 ) The other thing to note is that a Subwoofer only plays around 100 ~ 80 hz and below at about a 12dB per octave (The crossover point) This means the High frequency A/C whine of the Alternator is rarely an issue if the crossover is indeed doing its job as the frequency is well above 800 Hz (the times the rotor spins that would be audible to your Front stage) So for a Subwoofer, this is mostly an non issue, but other noise can get in. However, the Subwoofers Audible Frequency response can not produce such noise in the first place to the Listener. There is also the matter of the Subwoofer itself having close to a 20% or more distortion rate for Car audio subwoofers or higher. In fact that SKAR 8" subwoofer is WELL out of its rated clean output with a bit more than 100 watts of output. Further still? It does NOT like being in a sealed box. It Helps for audio "Accuracy" but the efficiency of that little 8 inch subwoofer along with any clean output just went out the window and ran to Malmo's No go zone! In order for that subwoofer to operate now in a sealed box? It now has to take around 4x (Four times the power) in order to produce the same output. The real big issue these days is that the amplifiers DC to DC Boost circuit for the rails of the Amplifier are puking WAY more noise IN TO the SIGNAL CABLE then anything EMF / EMI wise that your own car is producing these days. (Even in an OLD Volvo) About the only noise that you will indeed get is from the DC/DC switching inside the amplifier. But most amps today use a pretty okay filter on the Power input end and therefore don't back feed THAT much EMF back to the power input. The second part why its funny is the Amplifier itself costs LESS then a good set of RCA cables. 😂 That the truth. SKAR is a Budget Value Brand of the masses. Kind of like Philips or Grundig or Sony's mass market stuff you see often. Hard to grasp or believe, but a good set of RCA cables COSTS MORE than the AMP / SUB combo! Crazy right? !!!! (MADDD!!!! xD as the Australian would say it! ) The last reason why some find it funny is that those speakers are going to be ran from DEck power. And they really are Junk from an audio quality perspective. They don't use proper Crossover networks and they don't even use nothing more but a single 6dB filter on the tweeter. So as hard as it is to believe? Your stock speakers often sound more accurate. But the addition of that tweeter just gives the illusion of perceived sound quality. Some like the Infinity's Kappa's do a better job with a dedicated X/O network (Crossover network) , but are still not ideal. If you want to see what Quality car Audio looks like? Check out Peter at PS Sounds in the U.K. THAT dude ONLY uses Proper cables and parts throughout. But for 99% of us out there, ( I USE to be an "AudioPhile" -More like Audio Fool) Whatever cable or where its routed works OKAY. No Jerring or Making fun of you. Its just the concept of Audio quality in a Noisy diesel just is a funny concept since you won't hear any of it over the clanking of the old skool D24 Diesel engine. That the last part where people found it funny. I hope that helps to explain that. Love you swedish bro!

There should be a blue remote wire coming from the head unit that puts out 12v to the amp to turn it on. I guess you could just connect it to switched power for an original head unit.

First, a tip: far cheaper and just as good for sound deadening, “Quick-Roof” or “Peel & Seal”, depending on if Amazon, Home Depot, or Lows. Second a question: My dad bought a 1984 Volvo 760GLE Turbo Diesel, sedan, Silver, with Black Leather interior, manual 5 with OD, dealer added intercooler. He said it was one of only 4 in California, and the only one that color combo with manual. Was he boasting or bs’ing? Unfortunately, my sister totaled it in 2001😢 I WANT ONE, speck-ed just like that but a wagon. Is that even possible for under $10K?

That's a little sus because we never got the diesel 700 cars with a manual in the states. I definitely believe the exclusive options package, but depending on what year it was, who knows? Could have been a swap. I think one could definitely be had for less than 10k, but it would be an auto. Would definitely take a while to find though.

@@bakedbeansgarage116 it was as I said, I learned to drive in it. Thought it weird that Volvo would have VW build a straight 6 diesel for their flagship luxury edition car. He had trouble with the DMV since it was supposedly one of 4 of these iL6 VW diesels in California. It was for sure “special” order, from Volvo, at the ‘84 LA Auto Expo. I remember waiting for what seemed Iike forever at that show. Saw ever car at the show several times. I just remember how solid and high quality everything felt. God I miss that car!
