The hill on which Volterra stands was already inhabited during the early Iron Age.
Veláthri (the Etruscan name of Volterra), was part of the Etruscan confederation, called Etruscan dodecapoli or lucumonie, starting from the second half of the 6th century BC.
In Latin the city took the name of Volaterrae, from which derive the Greek Οὐολατέρραι Ouolatérrai and the current Italian name.
Partial independence was maintained even when Velathri was forced, the last of ....................................................................................................................................................

Oh dear Angela, nice seeing you again! This was a little... experiment ... As I'm in trying, as possible as I can, to organise some tour in the occasion of holidays and special festivals. It was a suggestion and I think a good one! From time to time I'll show something similar. Volterra was truly nice, agreed. Quite a long walk this...but the city truly is that large and still missed a lot. Nice memories. A big ciao Angela and grazie Ric

Love this! Love the atmosphere of the festa. Although I like the smaller quieter towns, I also love being in the middle of a celebration. Almost every town in Italy has their own unique celebration. This is a beautiful place too.

Grazie mille Riccardo!

GREAT tour, Riccardo. It's good to be kids again, periodically. Go back to the Middle Ages, having modern comforts. Die laughing in the stocks, instead of losing your head with the executioner's axe. I seemed to see Dante Alighieri, at the celebration, talking on his mobile phone, perhaps with Hell, Purgatory or Paradise from his Divine Comedy, or with beloved Beatriz. Everything very clean and stony in Volterra. Beautiful gateways to the city, beatiful buildings and charming corners. Beautiful Tuscan landscapes. Convratulations to the builders of the sewage systems, for not destroying the ancient stones of the streets in these beatiful cities. Plague is reported to have struck Volterra in 1.630 and 1.656. And Tuscany already has around 10.000 deaths , with Covid- 19, today. Grazie molto, for the video.
