When I first watched this episode I thought that the strategy for tiring Kenma out might have been unrealistic. However, it was really satisfying to watch you predict the other team's strategy very quickly! Also, the unique soundtrack that plays for this match is one of my favorites in the show. In sports such as volleyball, basketball and American football where players who are starting are normally your best and position specific "tiring this player out" is a fantastic tactic. Usually moving the ball to their side to make it hard on them due to them constantly having to receive the ball, or making them have to block you (making them jump a lot to make that player have jelly legs). Although I do have to say when you're the player/team they are coming at and you make them regret that tactic, absolutely rewarding.

    - Kuroo seemed intense in the flashback because Nekoma lost the previous match, he was frustrated, and that's why Kenma offered to go level-up (in volleyball) even though he probably wasn't all too enthusiastic about it x) - Chemical references: docosahexaenoic acid is a fatty acid essential for early brain development, and Kuroo claimed Yaku lacked it as an insult when they were 1st years, essentially saying that Yaku's dumb x) Astaxanthin is a red pigment, hence the reference to Nekoma's team color. Funnily enough, there's apparently some research into how both those compounds may help against oxidative stress and some toxic compounds in combination. - Fukunaga's pun: A-pass (meaning a great pass to the setter) sounds almost like "aeh-pass" (ええパス), which is a way to say "good pass" too x) (usually it's "ii" instead of "aeh", but the second works too).

About Kenma's motivations - I think one of the most captivating things about Haikyuu is how i goes to show that you can actually get those life-changing experiences [from volleyball in this case] with a variety of attitudes, even if you, much like Kenma, aren't 100% into it. And it doesn't need to be something grand that you would only find in high-level sports - it could be something seemingly mundane, but it'd still leave a huge impression on you, potentially change something about you. What Haikyuu never shies away from is being very open-minded and straightforward about everyone's path in volleyball being different but very precious nonetheless. Can't say much more than that cause spoilers, but well, there's a lot of great stuff ahead, so do look forward to that!

32:29 Yamamoto’s first name, which is Tora, I feel is another subtle reference to his similarity with Tanaka and here’s why: So Tanaka’s first name is Ryuunosuke, which his sister often shortens to just Ryuu. In Japanese, Tora and Ryuu translate to tiger and dragon, respectively. In Japanese folklore, it is believed that the tiger and the dragon are the two strongest beings and are on equal footing with each other.

"Wanna go level up" was Kenma's way of asking Kuro he wants help with practice, after Kenma realized Kuro was frustrated at losing that match back in Grade School. The scientific trash talking was a reference back to when Kuro and Yaku first met and had nothing in common except Volleyball. Kuro would always bring up the scientific benefits to eating fish. It's unfortunate that Fukunaga's jokes are a lot of puns that don't translate, or have to do with the cultural fascination that Japan has with how they view various foreign things. Not exactly something that can be explained easily.

If you remember, Hinata made a certain promise to Kenma when they first met. To have a match so awesome that Kenma wouldn''t be able to say it was a boring or trivial match. Love the Nekoma episodes coach, you're in for a treeeeeat. Just wanted to leave you with a small detail I don't think I've heard you mention just yet. As you know, Nekoma is symbolized by the cat, including Tora's name being tiger. But there's also their coach, who is meant to resemble the "Lucky Cat" figurines that many Japanese homes or stores will have around. His last name is actually Nekomata, which are a type of cat-like yokai, guiding spirits. So as you learn about Sarukawa's coach and their history, keep in mind these motifs of Nekoma's coach as this seemingly everlasting cat spirit, passing down his style and ideas to his students.

In case no one told you yet, Kanoka, “Tanaka’s “girlfriend,” “really did get her heart broken” (as she stated in the last episode). Here’s the context to her statement. In a previous episode Tanaka said that his heart belonged to another woman (Shimizu) when he expected Kanoka to confess her feelings to him when they were walking in the city at night. In that last set we saw Tanaka not give in to his negative thoughts despite how much was stacked against him. As Kanoka watched she acknowledges Tanaka’s fighting spirit and willingness to never give up. She sees that Tanaka will never give up on pursuing the woman Tanaka has his heart set on. He makes that amazing shot at the end of the last episode and amazes everyone with his mental fortitude and fulfillment of his desires despite being denied and pushed down. Kanoka knows she doesn’t have a chance, because Tanaka already has his mind and his heart set on someone else. Everybody cheers at Tanaka’s perseverance and tenacity, but for Kanoka it really is heart breaking! 😭

Also, if it helps, Nekoma flashbacks are a bit easier to catch bc both the Tanaka clone and Kenma dyed their hair in their second year I believe. so whenever you see em with black hair, it's their first year or earlier.

I was a very opinionated spiker and would always comment on what spikers should have done if we got dug or blocked, and most would accept it readily, but our star player, who won MVP at the national level 3 times in a row, was the type to also hold me accountable. He would often say things like, "sure, i made a mistake, but you could've done this instead". It was the constant keeping each other in check that made us champions 3 years straight.

I'm pretty sure the rice cake is ume (梅) flavour - 'Japanese' plum ( although it's really more an apricot), kind of bitter, and often salted, as umeboshi. Delicious, especially in onigiri - if you see an onigiri in an anime with a big red circle in the middle that''ll be umeboshi.

Just wanted to say have been waiting for your reaction for these two episodes with Nekoma ever since you started this series and I'm so glad it's here!! As a non-sporty introverted person who relates so much with Kenma, it's so interesting to see his growth as an athlete and team player in this show. kenma and Yamamoto is same age, that's why they interact in training more than others While kenma and kuro is neighbour, so they play together since childhood Kuro older than kenma, he is the one who bring volleyball into kenma live, because kuro really love volleyball. He ask kenma to join the club too

Kenma is a second year in the normal time line. You can differantiate the time line by his hair color. In the falshbacks he has dark hair and today he has yellow. Also Little Kuro's face was like that because the scene before that shows that the Nekoma middle scholl has just lost a game.

Yamamoto’s squatting technique got better between the first and second clips. That’s such a good detail. First, he looked like he had never squatted before. The second clip, he was going to depth, pausing there, and had a faster concentric than eccentric.

This Arc is one of my favorites in Haikyu! I love the relationship between Kenma and Tora and how at the end of the episode they basically motivate themselves to have each other's back. Tora getting all the difficult receives for him and Kenma setting as perfectly as he can to Tora and guiding on what he needs to do. Love the bonds of this team!!! Thank you for reacting!!!

This is honestly one of my favorite episodes because as someone who enjoys gaming and struggles with exercising on a regular basis I can relate to Kenma so much. We both share a drive to win, but we don't always want to put in the work... It's amazing to see a character in a sports anime that can represent those of us who sometimes struggle to give our all, but still have the drive to win.

I do think well-written shows won’t spoonfeed you certain things. Like immediately when Coach says “they do flashbacks without telling you when”, the show shows us Kenma before he dyed his hair and also someone saying to him “Keep up, first year”. And if you’ve keep track, you’d know Kenma is currently second-year and so the flashback is roughly the year before. So no need for obvious “One year ago”

He's my favorite Nekoma character cause even though he doesn't get spotlighted often, he's the kind of player that is consistent and get the job done, all while entertaining us audience. A lot of times he hits amazing hits here and there but it kinda gets unnoticed so it feels rewarding to watch him closely.

About the computer: sometimes in anime they will take pictures of normal everyday items and induce some artifact/filter in order to make it fit somewhat into the style. That way they don't have to illustrate mundane items while still being able to add texture to a scene. You can tell in the image that you highlighted that it doesn't appear to match to the environment that it's been placed in as far as shadowing and lighting goes, but it's not quite obtrusive enough to distract anyone.

Portuguese curiosity: “Guts” is translated to “Garra” (pronunciation: “ga” like Lady Gaga and “ha” like hahaha. Ga ha), which happens to be the same word for “Claw”, so it’s cool that they chose this word for translation, since cats have claws, which makes Nekoma a team literally full of garra

I am not a volleyball player, but I do play sports from time to time with my friends and I think that one of the main reasons why I still enjoy playing (in my case, football / soccer) is because I had "that moment" just like Bokuto (The owl) said. I had more than one moment of that type, but every time I get a really good run, an amazing goal or an amazing last moment defense I feel like I need MORE of that and continue playing.

Hi, coach. This is my first time commenting on your video. At 18:25, you asked about what the plastic package said, and although you might've already know since you ate it, I will tell you. If I'm not mistaken, from the very top (vertical writing) is 味しらべ which can mean "Taste-searching", and then there's the huge kanji, said 梅 with the little 味 below, it means Plum flavor (hence the sourness). At the bottom with the circle around it, on the right side, written 日本のお米100%使用 which means the crackers were made 100% using Japanese rice → rice crackers. Lastly at the very bottom, written だからおいしい meaning "that's why it's delicious". It's nothing much, but hope this helps! LOVE your Haikyuu reactions 🙏🏻

Its not explicitly stated but I think its implied that Kenma decided to die his hair the same Blonde as Tora as a show of Camaraderie and their friendship. When they cut from them fighting over the first name thing they put a lot of emphasis on the change in Kenmas hair and how it was the same Blonde as Tora now (Which I had never actually noticed till then, Only 2 with dyed hair and its the same color)

It's actually a lot more funny than that. Tora got scared of Kenma because he looked like Sadako (the girl in The Ring) and he thought it made him stand out, so he dyed it blonde...but that made him stand out more so he is just letting it grow out
