The "mantra" that Nekoma says before every match has a bit more meaning to it, they mention that they are blood, constantly moving and flowing, so the brain (or in this translation, mind) can function at it's best. The brain is supposed to be the setter or kenma in this case. Nekoma's playstyle is always be moving, keeping the ball up and sending it to the setter so the setter doesn't have to run around and tire himself up, and he can focus on thinking and strategizing, which is what Kenma excels at.

Oni means 'demon' in Japan that looks like an Ogre. This demon usually has an iron club with him. So the saying "Like giving oni his iron club" means to give an extra advantage to someone who already has the advantage (the strong made stronger). So Coach Nekomata said "Kageyama alone is already a genius. And By adding Hinata by his side, he becomes invincible".

Wheras, in volleyball coach found that players knew they had to play as a team not as one player. Basketball and volleyball are different when it comes to playing as a team. 21:20 it's spot on that you said that Nekoma treats the match like a chess game!! their school name is an anomaly (all the other schools we'll meet with animal mascots have a kanji that directly references the animal, as we see with karasu = 烏 = crow in Karasuno). phonetically, "neko" means "cat" but the kanji for cat (猫) isn't used. Furudate actually writes Nekoma as 音 = "ne," meaning sound, followed by 駒 = "koma," meaning shogi/chess piece. so Nekoma = 音駒 = "sound of [moving] a shogi piece," which references their play style of analysis and strategy. fun fact: another unrelated use of the character for "koma" is horse. interpreting it wrong means their team's name is Horse Noise High School. completely changes the vibe lmao

Haikyuu usually has a 2-cour season so it will have 2 different introductions per season. Haikyuu is actually supposed spelled as Haikyū with a macron u, to emphasise the long u pronunciation at the end. Either due to font or stylistic limitation, it sometimes winds up being spelled as Haikyu instead. But Haikyuu is perfectly acceptable as a romanised version of the japanese characters!

The thing with Nekoma's playing style is that their technique is to never let the ball touch the ground which means being good at defense and use it to tire the opponent by consistently connecting the ball etc. but their main weapon is Kenma that acts as their "brain" when it comes to analyzing opponent players, thinking of strategy to win that is obvious in Kuroo's (their captain, kpop no. 2 black haired guy) little speech before they play the match: "Were like the blood in our veins. We must flow without stopping and keep the oxygen moving." = Dont let the ball drop, connect the ball with your body, keep it moving. ".. So the brain can work. " = So that Kenma "their brain" can work. Kenma is a type of player who doesn't like moving around and has low stamina. As explained by Coach Ukai, Unlike Kageyama who unifies the awkward team with his talent, Kenma is a player who is supported by his team's consistent receive to flaunt his talents fully. So hence the speech before the game makes more sense now. They need to keep connecting the ball so that Kenma can properly observe and analyze their opponents just like how the blood needs to circulate properly in order for the brain to work properly.

--- A thorough explanation as to how to write Haikyuu and why it is sometimes written with 1 U and other times 2 U --- Please like this so he sees it, I don't mind if it isn't shown in a video I'd just like to know he got the explanation! Whether Haikyuu is written with 1 or 2 U is a translator difference. Japanese doesn't use our alphabet and the title is written in "Hepburn" a system to romanize (turn into our alphabet) japanese starting with the Kanji for volleyball " 排球 " Though I dunno how this process is done. The characters used " ハイキュー " Are from the katakana alphabet, a phonetic alphabet used for foreign words and names. Where: " ハ " Is "Ha" " イ " Is " i " " キュ " are "kyu" and " ー " indicates the last syllable is meant to be stretched or long. Combining the first two Hai makes westerns say it like the letter i though we can exhale hard and make it Hi but the technical pronunciation would be ha-i followed by the kyu with the u being a bit long in pronunciation. Translators may prefer to write it as we would in English with just 1 u or to spell it more phonetically by adding the second u to indicate the need to extend the last syllable when speaking it. Despite us looking at it like it's all translated by "Crunchyroll" as a monolith the truth is they have multiple translators of varying skills, preferences, and work ethics. Some of the later seasons for example have some pretty bad errors in the subtitles such as repeated words (like 'they' being there twice) and some words outright missing or the grammar being flawed. Due to this multiple translators end up working on different episodes of the same show and so the preferences end up switching back and forth. Combine this with either a disinterest or a lack of staff tasked with ensuring consistency or fixing the subtitles when mistakes are spotted by fans and you end up with this sort of discrepancies. Some shows will even have something as significant as honorifics (San, Kun, Senpai, etc added at the end of someone's name) switch from being present to absent in the subtitles. From what I've noticed in Haikyuu this isn't an issue though as when the honorific isn't present it's usually because it's team members talking to each other like how Hinata will just say "Kageyama" but when Takeda-sensei refers to Ukai he always says "Ukai-Kun" Here's a general (simplified) explanations of honorifics while I'm at it. -Kun: Mainly for younger boys/men, semi-casual. -Chan: Mainly for younger girls/women, semi-casual. -San: Respectful, used for equals and older individuals, gender neutral, Formal -Senpai: Used towards elders or seniors in a field, profession, or school. (Tanaka and Nishinoya says Shimizu-senpai because she's a 3rd year and they are 2nd years), Gender Neutral, Formal -Kouhai: Not used the same way as Senpai, refers to a junior in the same contexts as senpai, is somewhat insulting if used in place of an honorific. Gender Neutral, Not used as honorific -Sensei: Means teacher, used for them as well as with doctors (If your doctor was 'Doctor Smith' they would be Smith-Sensei. But the term does NOT mean doctor.)Gender Neutral, formal. -Sama: Highest respect, used rarely, mainly towards people much higher in stature to you. For example a guest at an inn may be called "Okyaku-sama". Gender neutral, Very formal Tl;dr: Crunchyroll uses multiple translators through the same show and how certain things are translated depends on preferences and adherence to guidelines. Haikyu is Anglicized while Haikyuu is closer to the original pronunciation and spelling. I included a list of honorifics while I was on it. Hope this is helpful to anyone even if it isn't our host! Edit/Extra: An Oni is a type of ogre like monster in Japanese folklore. It is often depicted with a large studded iron club. Kageyama is the Ogre while Hinata is the Iron Club in that analogy.

I love how you keep saying that Hinata is "trying to get to another level." Keep a hold of that idea, because it's often used in future episodes. Also, Kuroo is a big nerd, and we love him for it; he really likes chemistry, and he often uses scientific analogies when talking about the team. Like Daichi, he's the calm, cool captain that isn't afraid to get a little angry when needed. I really enjoyed your reaction and can't wait for the next episode. Also, you asked if Naoi and Coach Ukai played on the same team in high school? They didn't, but Ukai was on Karasuno and Naoi was on Nekoma, so similar to Grandpa Ukai and Nekomata, they have a bit of a rivalry.

I love this Nekoma-Karasuno rivalry, because they're intended to be a mirror of each other. On one hand, most of the players parallel at least a trait of the other, so in that sense it's like looking at the mirror reflection, and on the other they specialize in opposites: Nekoma in defense and long runs (they don't mind playing the 3 -or 4, 5- sets if it means they've completely broken down their opponent's plays, because they don't tire as much doing crazy spikes every time), Karasuno in offense and preferring to win as soon as possible (so their attacks aren't countered and stop working, but even then they try to mix it so it works again); just like how your reflection is the same, but inverted. All these characters are just really nice and worm their way into your heart the longer you spend with them.

About the Oni and his club, in Japanese folklore, there is a supernatural monster called oni. They are usually portrayed as a demon or an ogre in loincloths carrying an iron kanabo club as its weapon. So it means Kageyama is the oni while Hinata is his weapon😁. I watched this episode a few days ago and I remember thinking that Karasuno was leaving themselves too exposed by revealing all of their assets from the get go when Kageyama and Hinata did the first quick and then the Asahi follow. Like, about half of their main team is made of first years who haven't had the time to co-ordination themselves to each other and their tricks are impressive but limited. Then they just went in and busting out their biggest strengths in front of a team they don't know anything about. Personally I thought that was a bit reckless because then Nekoma could easily grasp their strong points and strategize against it. And I thought that was really clever of Nekoma. But then I didn't really know the sport at all and I dismissed it till it actually happened and I was like, "What the hell? I haven't even had this game for a week!" Now it's feels really good to see a real life coach explaining that all in real scenario and how it could've worked.

15:14 Yeah, they say that before a serve. It means "Give us a good serve" instead of its literal meaning as a compliment :D 20:53 "Oni" means demon in Japanese. Usually, demons in japan are depicted with a weapon- their iron club. It seems these translations expect too much from new anime watchers...if it's a famous Japanese word, they won't translate it. It's the same for Nekoma's nickname, "Neko" which sounds like "cat" in Japanese Other than that, coach, the next episode has additional scenes, so don't stop watching when the ending song starts playing! Coach, Kageyama spreading his hands outward to set is just a minor adjustment that will fit the scene to see whats happening beyond the arms and hands to the spiker hitting the ball. If the director chose to use the normal technique to keep Kageyama's hands close together then the audience will see only a portion and not the whole movement. It's a foreground-background technique in filmaking to see the whole idea of the action in one frame.

Not sure if this helps but just to clarify: Kageyama is kind of considered to be "inhuman" when it comes to setting. When Hinata is jumping to spike with his eyes closed its because Kageyama is setting the ball very quickly straight into his hand (Hinata jumps and blindly does a full swing). That's why Hinata has a hard time hitting the sets the way he wants with his eyes open (the ball is going too fast).

I've been watching other KZreadrs react on the word "Battle at the Garbage Dump" wherein garbage dump is the place where cats and crows fight each other for food basically and they are always laughing on that. It's kinda disappointing. Why? Because they don't even see intricate details and metaphors used to portray the teams. I know this is a bit offensive on the part of them but I think they are just doing a reaction video, nothing more. But as for you coach, you're an exception. The way you explain the technicalities of the anime and the volleyball itself is one of a kind. God bless!

I'm so excited. I've watched many different reaction videos about Haikyuu because I love it so much, but yours is BY FAR the best one and the one i''ve been more excited to watch. It's super interesting watching your points of view. I just hope you'll react to the entire show and not stop only at the end of season 1. The show quality keeps improving all the way till the end, so I can't wait to see you slowly unwrap the whole show for us. Keep it up!

You were right about the “kpop hair style” guy with black hair being the childhood best friend of Kenma’s. His name is Kuroo Tetsurou and he is the captain/middle blocker of Nekoma. Kuroo is a chemistry nerd and will have a few lines that have big science words and jokes, and Kenma is a quiet gamer who doesn’t like moving around a lot. They’re opposites which is why they’re good friends.

Every 25-episode season of an anime usually has two opening theme songs, one for eps 1-12 (or 1-13) and the other for the rest of the season

I'm wondering if they animed Kageyama's hands flaring out, because he is basically speed tossing the ball at Hinata. With Hinata already in the air before Kageyama actually gets the ball to set,; perhaps that small extra movement is used to get some extra power quickly out of his set. As said not really good form because it could affect accuracy and delivery; but as with most sport skills more power usually comes with a risk of accuracy.

Kenma Kozume is a 2nd-year student in Nekoma High. He is referred to as the "heart" and "brain" of the team by his teammates.also he doesn't view their self as better than anyone he's just a little lazy, also that boy in the flashback what was the same boy and his name is Tetsurō Kuroo and is a third-year student from Nekoma High. He is the Boys' Volleyball Club's captain and a middle blocker, known as the "Scheming Captain"
