Volkswagen ID. Buzz Review: Dream Van or EV Nightmare? | Henry Catchpole - The Driver’s Seat
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The new Volkswagen ID. Buzz isn’t officially a campervan… yet. That will come with the longer wheelbase version (which is also the version which will eventually be available in the USA). However, Henry Catchpole has found a way to turn it into a Camper. With the ingenious Ququq BusBox-4 you can quickly convert the VW ID. Buzz into a mobile bedroom and kitchen. It’s not quite a full Westfalia-style transformation but it is rather appealing, not least because you can slide the whole thing out and revert the Buzz to its original five-seat layout.
Of course you might be the sort of person that thinks hotels were invented for a reason but still likes the idea of owning a Buzz. And why not, because it’s a very funky looking vehicle with its optional two-tone paint (this one is Bay Leaf green) and it seems to make the world a slightly happier place wherever you go.
The fact that the ID. Buzz is an EV is both a blessing and curse. It’s a boon because it makes it feel refined and relatively quick - not things you usually associate with a vehicle like this. However, with a 77kWh battery the Buzz doesn’t have a great range and, if you live in the UK, the charging network still feels inadequate if you want to have an adventure that takes you further than 100miles from your driveway.
Then there’s the festive fun. Santa Claus would certainly be able to fit plenty of presents in the back of a Buzz (although an ID. Buzz Cargo would be even better) and there is room for a tree on the dashboard (look closely). With bi-directional charging you could even use it to help run all the Christmas lights at home. And yes, the decoration is real (there’s a link below if you want one).
We hope you enjoy the film - a slightly more perched version of The Driver’s Seat. Let us know what you think of the Buzz in the comments down below: do you think it would make sense as an alternative to a more conventional family EV like a Tesla Model Y?

Thanks for yet another great review. I’ve bought my current sporty cars by trusting the reviews (600LT Spider & 718 Spyder) you given them. You certainly have never let me down. However, I ordered my ID. Buzz long before you get your hands on one. I collect mine on Friday and I am really excited about it. I’ve gone for the 1st Edition in lime yellow and candy white two tone. I’m delighted to get my hands on one so early, especially with the 2 year wait for two tone paint quoted today and I believe it gives me the perfect 3 car garage.

Still want/need the short wheelbase state side. Give me physical buttons, a shorter wheelbase and a cost below $50,000, and I’ll sign up! Otherwise, VW will likely lose me to Hyundai, GM or CANOO.
I think this will make a perfect camper. Recreational Vehicles tend to spend a lot of time parked at sites with access to electrical power, at least here in the U.S.
The kerning mistake that you shouted out won my heart. That kerning should be illegal.
I think, especially in today's car market, that there is a solid argument for novelty.
The second row seats can't be removed, and the windows don't go down? I know VW isn't trying to get in on the mass-market North American minivan market with this thing, but I didn't expect them to forgo basic usability features.

Catchpole you clever lad. Good concise review as usual.
Compared to the original VW bus, I feel this is a novelty. The original had much more interior room
Nice initial offering imo. As you note, nice everyday driver, but to meet real potential it needs an update to 275 - 325 mile range for folks who want to use it for a "camping" or "touring" vehicle. All wheel drive would be very beneficial as an option and the promised extended length version would really help the line-up with same updated range and AWD. Hopefully these options will be forthcoming.
I bet the mid life cycle update will make this an ace bit of kit. … That said, all the haters spilling verbal sewage over the Buzz and the T7 lifting the outgoing T6 on a huge pedestal. I really don‘t get …at all. In my eyes the T6 is heavily outdated and for its exterior format does not offer much interior space. (I grew up in a gloriously underpowered rear-engined T3 Multivan with tons of space). So I am all for it. Bring it on with progress and back to clever packaging.
It's great but it's not £60-80k great. £40k would be worth considering.

As a happy T5 owner I have some serious reservations about the usability of the Buzz as a like-for-like swap. The Campingbox is neat, but I can't see it being used when there's rain or midges around (usually the case on holidays in Scotland or Scandinavia with our campervan), you'll be inside the vehicle. We need to sit around a table inside to eat in the evenings, I can't see there's much headroom or storage space in the much smaller cargo area . A pop-top might work here, but climate considerations in the UK mean that the van in "evening mode" has to work buttoned up rather than raised when it is cold, windy, and rainy (a fair bit of the year). And there's a huge aftermarket already for T4/T5/T6 accessories - which won't fit in the Buzz. I'm just amazed at the dimensions and range of the Buzz being so limiting and VW taking a punt on it. Time will tell I guess.
Imagine cooking on that thing and the oil smell getting into the van…
The whole point of a VW van is to have the back fall down to a bed, but also be able to sit had a little table. Otherwise, it’s just the same as any other minivan.
I would love to see if one could be outfitted to accommodate my daughter's wheelchair. Of course, more range would be good but in all honesty it would be plenty for most of what i need and it looks cool!
Mr Catchpole!!! Good to se you are producing quality content again after the end of Carfection. Consider me subscribed :)
I have a ID3 and this "waiting for hours to charge" thing that people trot out is not an issue in practice. With the exception of really long distance drivers I can do 300 miles comfortably with just a 20 minute break for pee, coffee and snack and by then I've more than enough charge to reach my destination. At my parents I use a granny charger to go from flat to full, but as I'm there for a visit for a couple of days that's not an issue either. If you were going longer your stop would be a lunch break and therefore a bit longer. It's also worth saying that charging speeds are not linear. It's must faster to charge when the battery is low than in the 80-100 range when the vehicle will slow the charge down. Thus charge to 100% before you set off then charging at pitstops when the battery is low will have almost no impact on your journey time, assuming like me you need a comfort break every couple of hours.
I am shocked to not hear anyone call this out as not a van. For me, the definition of a van is the ability to get up out of the driver’s seat and walk around (fine, hunched over). If you have 6” between the seats stuffed with a center console such that to go aft you need to get out of the car and walk around in the rain, it’s not a van. It’s a small mini van pure and simple. Nobody wants that stigma. It is beautiful, I’ll agree to that. But needs to be 12” wider (and their upcoming long wheel base), to be called a van.
@TinLeadHammer

It is not a minivan. It is a wagon in a van shape.
I’ve had an EV for 4 months and over 6000 miles. The first thing I did in August when I got it is went on a 2800 road trip around Europe. The charging network is fine and growing. It would be nice though if EVs had around 300 miles range at 70 mph, regardless of outside temperatures
This is what the Honda Element should have evolved into.
I wanna see the long wheelbase version
Definitely a fail to not release it as a camper first imo. Camper culture been huge lately.
I like the, " Christmas jumper" start of this video :) Its nice to see people can still see reality in something as simple as, "this vs that". Aesthetics vs usefulness ratio, one might say. Factors such as color make a difference in how we perceive wants.
This reminds me of a Top Gear review, God do I miss that show!
Idk about you but big vw vans are about carefree freedom. Kinda hard to do that when you constantly have to Google where to find a charging station on your road trips. Then waiting for it to charge every time. Not to mention you need a smart phone with you. For me, it's all about unplugging. Not constantly plugging into the grid.

Totally impractical. A nine hour trip to Denver, Co from KCMO turns into eleven or twelve. No way I’m taking it to the mountains for a camping trip
I would look at the Camper van to come out later but I want would like a few things. 4wheel assist when desired (Alaska Snow). Because the van would be longer I would hope there would be more battery and range , I would like 380 (Alaska Road distances). Can’t use these in winter, but solar panels on roof.
