Volkswagen Caddy 5 2021 - People's Van (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Volkswagen Caddy is a light commercial vehicle in production since the late 1970s. Depending on the generation it is based on one of the several VW group models. Like the previous generation, also this new Volkswagen Caddy is made in Poland. It is larger, more modern, and more frugal, than its predecessor. Let’s find out.
The new Caddy is made on the MQB platform, like most current VW range starting with the Polo supermini, and going up to the Tiguan, and their counterparts in Audi, Seat and Skoda brands. The fifth generation Caddy is the same length, like the 4th gen model, but it is slightly wider, and the wheelbase is 7 cm longer. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, the rear door is wider, and there is also more space inside.
The new Caddy is still available in the utility Cargo spec, as well as in this more family oriented version. Both come with standard 272.5 cm wheelbase, or in the Maxi 297 cm extended-wheelbase variant.
The passenger version, regardless of the wheelbase, can be ordered in 5 or 7 seater form. This is a 5 seater with standard wheelbase.
↔ Volkswagen Caddy dimensions:
✔ length: 4500 mm
✔ width: 1855 mm
✔ height: 1798-1833 mm
✔ wheelbase: 2755 mm
✔ boot/trunk: 1213-2556 L
💲 Volkswagen Caddy starting price: 21 400 euro
💲 Volkswagen Caddy Move 2.0 TDI 7-DSG price as tested: 40 000 euro

I have just bought this car Cddy Maxi Life 2.0TDI DSG (122ps) covered 1500miles so far. I have the infotament one level down or the mid level. This alows all the extras and has a volume nob. only down is the climat has one short cut to access. DSG gearbox is one of the smothest I used BMW or Mercedes. The ride is firm unloade,. But with all the drivers aids is a long distane dream. I find the handerling far beter than the last gen Caddy. This is no hot hatch on narow country the firm ride is most noticable but it is not uncomfortable. If you have 3 dogs and children and regularly cove 320km a day for weekend family visits this is the perfect vehicle. I am averaging 47.6mpg but on the longer runs getting 58.9mpg constant 70mph.

@@clooperman3745 I totally understand her feeling of being overwhelmed with the interface. It's over the top. As far as the driver aids are concerned, I'm used to them, because I spent the last 10 years driving cars with the newest versions of gizmos. I noticed that many drivers, who switch cars every few years, and face the current gen of driver aids, tend to dislike them. Probably because their driving style may be somewhat aggressive. It also depends on the brand and implementation. Some safety features can be adjusted to be less intrusive.

It took Apple years to admit that PowerPC is not the best processor in the world and Intel admitting Pentium 4 is a dead end. It took years for BMW to admit they have gone bit too far with custom design and it will take long time for VW to admit the mistake and get the infotainment fixed.

This infotainment system actually stoped me buying and even considering for time being anything from VW including Škoda or SEAT. When I was buying new car last year I went on a test drive with new Octavia and Leon and ended up buying a Honda ( admitedly not just because it had physical buttons but it also drives better) - for comparison my best friend bought Leon and my boss bought Octavia and they had nothing but problems with infotainment in the meantime. That's why my brother ended up buying Hyundai I 30 this year. So there you go VW - two disgrunteled custemers and two potential customers lost because someone (cough CEO cough) had a brief stint at Tela.

Could not agree more. Was recently looking for an electric or hybrid car, but everything vw and Skoda has those fiddly to use infotainments and no quick way to control the temperature. Which is something I want to do without looking and not be playing around with eyes off the road. So ended up, with a camry hybrid which has been amazing. If VW were perhaps apple they could make something so simple and intuitive using touchscreens but this is a car company, so it is what it is...

Looking at a new vehicle in this category, and I do like VW, prices not so much but build quality and styling on them is general better. Having said this i think the caddy as missed the mark with the rear seating configuration. They should have introduced a 3 individual rear seater configuration to maximise load space modularity. Shame because now this puts this vehicle out of consideration. But great review thank you.
