--------------------
CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE is a radio drama series created and directed by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982. Later in the early 2000s the show was repeated by the NPR satellite feed.
The format was similar to that of classic old time radio shows like The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, in that the episodes were introduced by host E. G. Marshall who provided pithy wisdom and commentary throughout. Unlike the hosts of those earlier programs, Marshall is fully mortal, merely someone whose heightened insight and erudition plunge the listener into the world of the macabre.
CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE was broadcast each weeknight, at first with a new program each night. Later in the run, three or four episodes were new originals each week, and the remainder repeats. There were 1,399 original episodes.

At my grandfathers farm where I grew up working and going to school all he had was a radio and by the way I own it. 1923 I think is the date on it and runs off a car battery lol. He would put on bbc or cbc radio at night for shows like these and would sit there with hot chocolate and be in awe of what we could hear and see. Best time ever.

I had a pocket 12 transistor radio. The brand escapes me but I listened to St.Louis Cardinal baseball and WLS top 40 out of Chicago back in the 60's with that transistor radio. I grew up on a farm near Kennett Missouri were Cheryl Crow is from. That was 200 miles South of St.Louis. Oh, and I am 66 years old.

I grew up when CBSRMT was still on the air. I'm surprised that producer Hy Brown allowed stories supposedly taking place in the present sound so dated. I have never hear a touch tone phone used in any of these stories. The Rotary dial system was already obsolete when these shows were aired . Since all phones were made in plastic instead of metal by the 1970s, you don't hear the 'plastic touching plastic' as opposed to a metallic sound effect being used when the receiver is lifted lifted or being replaced. The only times I heard men referred to as 'mugs', other than 'mugshot', was in the old Gangster movies from the 1930's. Women were never referred to as 'dolls' or 'dames' in everyday conversation in the 1970's.. even among criminals.. Before anyone has a chance to call me 'too picky' OR 'complaining' ect, I'm a Broadcast historian and have around 50,000 shows in my own collection. If I hear an error repeatedly, they just jump out at me right away.
