I have been an Arch user for ~10 years, so pretty set in my ways and unlikely to switch, but I find Void so interesting and have a lot of respect for it. I wish the project nothing by continued success, we need more base "grandfather" distros like Void instead of a plethora of the same thing with a different name, theme, and a few pre-installed apps.

Void has a lot of similarities to the BSDs. The maintainer of Void was previously an OpenBSD developer, so there's a lot of influence there. I'm running Void as my daily driver now. I was previously on NixOS, which I really liked, but there were some things that I couldn't run and I needed something somewhat more normal. I love FreeBSD, and Void feels a lot like that to me. Of course there's some differences, but I love it.

I just switched my laptop to Void (run Gentoo on my desktop) and wanted something easy to manually install & fast, void hits all the points. It really does feel like a combination of FreeBSD meets Arch and I can't put my finger on why that actually feels great to use.

void is sooo based. my experience on void has been basically unmatched. the AUR still keeps me on arch but if it wasn't for that I'd be an avid void enjoyer.

If someone is calling a distro a GEM regardless of its "hard" nature for beginners, that means its really a GEM

Once you have Void up and running, you will encounter fewer problems in daily use. As you say, the combination of a rolling release model and stability makes Void attractive. The independent nature of this distro with its unique package manager appeals to many.

I wanted to tell you that due to your videos, I finally made the switch from Fedora to Cachy OS, which is a pretty big deal, considering Cachy OS is based on Arch, and at first, I was so overwhelmed that I decided to reinstall Fedora right away. But then I said that I could say least play around in Arch for a bit. And I'm glad I did. It took a different mindset to learn Arch CLI, and I've only learnt the basics till now. But it's getting much easier, not that I know what to do. So that's how I can say, 'I use Arch BTW' 😂😂😂. But jokes aside, thanks for the courage you gave 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻.

@@A1RM4X Update : Isn't it actually easier to get applications on Arch. Just using yay -S with AUR names. On Fedora, I had to add repositories after hunting a new one for each company and then download. On Arch, it's easy... Can you suggest some Arch CLI guide for basic uses... Though I think everyone here would prefer one of your videos...

what i love about void linux is its fluid behavior and snappiness. never have i seen any other linux distro yet that mimics the same fliud and snappy behavior of void linux. it's like mac osx. its desktop/windows/mouse rendering are somehow vsync'ed out of the box. it's very noticeable especially at high refresh rates. window dragging, even dragging a browser playing 4k60 youtube video is very smooth and does not show any screen tearing... that and with minimal cpu and memory utilization makes me like this OS more.. even more than windows.

    void vs alpine linux?

alpine is more for servers, void is more for desktop. Depends on your use case and preferences to be honest

  • @Chat_De_Ratatoing

I like void, but why would you use this when you have Alpine, which is stable (has a rolling release variant called edge), smaller (use busybox coreutils and alternatives), uses musl ( or glibc ), and use open-rc as init. So it's basically the same thing, but with more support, and more documentation. Void is great but Alpine does the same thing, with a bit more recent packages while keeping stability since it's used in almost every containers. I love Void and Alpine i just wish that they'll work on a single excellent distro to not work on 2 great distros

Does alpine edge have any xbps-src alternative? Also does alpine edge comes with as much support as its stable counterpart? Is it even as stable? I never knew that alpine edge existed before this comment so I would say that's a no way option (as there will be no community on it). Normal Alpine have a big community but I don't think the edge version is the same.

It's to difficult for me and and it takes much to long to install. On MX Linux it's a few steps and voila in 2 minutes it's installed. I don't want to learn how to compile or whatever. I want to install it and use it. Email and browser is all I use and for me MX is perfect for that. Because it's Debian based, very stable and it just works. Simple man, simple demands.

Then that's fine, you don't need this distro but for those of us who actually like messing with our systems this stuff is cool and even fun!
