I was a medic in 1st Avn. and ended up with the Cav. for a month near the parrots beak, Cambodia. I could tell funny drinking stories but couldn't talk about the real shit when I came back. Coming home I got so much vile shit when I wore my uniform and from people who found out I was a Viet Vet. I was silent for 30 years then started having flash backs. That's when I had to start talking about it. Like Coats I started to believe it didn't happen. In 2001 I was at a SA gas station and bought a buddy poppy and mentioned that I was a Nam Vet. The guy selling them put his hand on my shoulder and said welcome home. I cried; I didn't know it had affected me so strongly. When I came home the VFWs were full of WW2 Vets who didn't want anything to with Vietnam Vets. Really down on us. The VA was really tough on me when I wanted help to get normal again. They failed with the mental health, but physical health they did fine. I drank for 7 years after getting back and Christ helped me quit using and led me to A.A. I've been sober 43 years now.

I was a US paratrooper and in 2006, I saw a Vietnam Veteran with a 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" tattoo. I told him that I appreciated the Vietnam combat veterans and they were reason that I enlisted. He began to cry and tell me about some of his buddies that died in Vietnam. I think of that paratrooper and pray that he has a peaceful and long life. Rick Coats, I pray for the same peace for you.

I did 2 tours in Viet Nam as a Marine with Lima Co. 3/26 BLT on the USS Tripoli in the Chu Lai area and Delta Co 1/1 1st Marine Div. Our TAOR was from West of Danang to the Laotian Border, North to the DMZ. Nearly every Marine at some time was stationed on Hill 55 (nickel-nickel) or passed through it. The names of places and stories about, were repeated over and over again. That was the tragedy of that war for us as American Combatants. As the jet ascended Danang as I was leaving for what I knew was my last time in Viet Nam, a flood of emotions struck me of "what was that all about?". My thoughts raced not only to the American guys I had known and had passed through, but also the native people that I had known and was leaving behind and would never see again. I have often thought about that moment and the different kind of sadness it invoked, but have never mentioned to anyone, as I figured no one could ever know what that could have felt like. I appreciate being able to leave that as a message here, maybe some other Viet Nam Vet will have a clue what I'm talking about. Semper Fi and Salute to all who served.

I was there in 1967 as a Marine 0311 and 0141. Ended up doing tower duty in Phu bai. I was blessed due to bad feet. My feet are flat as pancakes but that didn't matter in 1966. Everyone was drafted.You can say I was a sitting duck. Only God knows why he let me live.

Thanks brave Marine! I was drafted in 1968. MOS was 11B. The Army in it’s infinite wisdom sent me to Germany to an infantry division. I was very fortunate but there is a level of guilt that I didn’t serve in Vietnam. God bless you Marine.

What’s a real American? Someone like me he went to Nam and never understood why?

That has to be the best interview of a Vietnam Vet I have ever heard. I grew up watching main stream media evening news covering the war. I graduated HS in 74 and it has bothered me my entire life that the service men that served got so much disrespect from the public. God Bless you Sir!

You survived by the grace of God. Also because you didn't write those letters home or talked of dying while there. I worked as a Corpsman in a field hospital, working ER/Triage (1/1) in 1966. Heard stories of marines coming in WIA stating so& so who was killed always talked about dying over there. Or wrote those letters home. After awhile working in ER, I choose to volunteer to replace another Corpsman in the field. Even though the fear in combat was always present, I prayed (psalm 23)for strength & protection to get me through, plus got rid of those death & dying thoughts crossing my mind. 4 of my marines were killed by this one sniper, my arm rose to my head when he fired at me, hitting it instead. I'm a believer in a higher power to this day and always keep my thoughts positive. John Eynon Hm3

The 1st time somebody thanked me I almost cried

Welcome home Mr. Coats and to all Vietnam Veterans. I am the son of a Vietnam Veteran. Henry Taylor 69/70. He is in his mid 70’s. These guys and veterans of the Korean “conflict” are the next line of veterans we have left to thank for there service. Most WWII veterans have passed on. Many of these veterans proudly wear something showing where and when they served. If you see a veteran I beg you to approach them and thank them. They will appreciate it. I promise you it will make their day. If you are reading this and you are a veteran of our military I thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you are a Vietnam Veteran know that you hold a special place in this old NC boys heart. Gary Owens

My uncle was an inlisted Marine aircraft mechanic at DaNang. He never got over his experience there and took his own life many years later at age 60 because he could not suppress the memories any longer.

Blessings my friend. My Father died at 37 from drinking. I was only 10. He served during Korea.

Thank You Rick For Serving! You Are A True American Hero!

I pulled 8yrs in the Corps and anytime someone thanks me for my service I tell them to save it for a Vietnam combat veteran. They actually deserve thanks.

Thank you for your service, Mr Coats, you are truly a hero. You lived through hell indeed and should be treated with respect and understanding for really trying to self-medicate due to the horror you have lived through at such a young age. I hope you can finally put it behind you and finally achieve some peace of mind. Thanks for your service, I was just an elenentary school kid when you were over serving the hell of Vietnam. I remember coming home and listening to the numbers of killed, missing and wounded each day of the war. Of course we had no idea of the psychological injuries as a result of the war.

God Bless you sir. There are thousands of veterans that are going through what you are. Your not alone.

I graduated high school in 1975, so everything was over by then. Thank you for posting these interviews. Always been fascinated with that war, because it was close to me.

I was A marine grunt it Vietnam, two tours. I can relate and identify with everything Rick says except the part about bombing japan. I drank for thirty years trying to escape the Demond’s. It didn’t work but I finally went to the VA and they medicated me and with PTSD and combat wounds received a 100% VA rating. I’ll never completely forgive my country because of the way we were treated when we returned by the cowards though.

Welcome home Sir. And Thank you for your service Mr. Bellam. My dad is VV as well and he too is 100% disabled. But he only received this much later in his life. Like yourself probably, it was only after spending the rest of his life dealing with what all VV’s came home with mentally, the traumatic home coming reception or lack of and providing a wonderful life for mom and myself did he receive any help from the government. To me it seems like, Government: Ok. Here you go. You’re back home to American soil. Now, you can go live your life. 40 years from now (if you actually live that long) let us know if we can do anything for you. Don’t get me wrong. I am thankful he is being helped with the injuries received while serving. But like so many of you guys, these aren’t injuries you can actually see. As I’m sure you know Agent Orange did so much harm to our young men. Dad has had open heart surgery, 2 inches of his Aorta replaced and suffers from Pulmonary Fibrosis. It’s pretty much the same story shared by thousands and thousands of Vietnam Veterans. The majority were drafted and made to go to a place they had probably never heard of. To fight for a people that didn’t want you there, that in one way or the another helped the army’s of the enemy you were there to protect them from, being poisoned with chemicals that your on country sprayed on you while try to kill the vegetation while also knowing that it would harm its on troop’s. Those are but a few things. The most despicable thing to me is that the government forced you to do so while they tied both hands behind your back. Example Government Intel: We’ve located a huge ammo factory that is supplying 3 quarters of all VC and NVA with ammo. It’s at the head of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Destroying it eliminates their ability to produce ammo and destroys all of the logistic abilities they’ve used to prolong the war and kill our troops. It will force the enemy to the negotiation table. Government Bras: No! We’ve located a target we believe that if destroyed will boost our troops moral to a level that assures we win this “Conflict”. We have been made aware that 40 clicks to the West there’s possibly a small building that’s believed to be a latrine that Ho Chi Minh himself took at shat in at the age of 6. We believe blowing up this is a better target. It will help moral. So go get it done. It seems that blatant to me. It’s despicable what the US Government did to its own troops during this “Conflict”. All so a few could get even richer. Again, I thank you and all veterans for your service.

I got to 3/7 in May67, I was a Sergeant and was assigned to the Battalion S2 of the Battalion Headquarters on hill 37. At that time, Mike company was on hill 52 and India company had bridge security of a huge bridge the SeaBees had built to west of us. I was there from May 67 to Apr 68. I had already completed my tour in the Danang area and they asked for volunteers to go the the infantry. I volunteered and ended up serving a 20 month tour in Vietnam. I served 12 years in the Corps. Like Rick I had PTSD all my life after that and didn't know it until buddies of mine in the postal service (vietnam vets) advised me to see a shrink. I was diagnosed with PTSD in Nov 2017, just before I retired from the Postal service.

Sir(s), whenever I listen to your interviews I do something that I now feel I want to share with you. I am a veteran too, I weld in my workshop (alone) and listen, but whenever you ask your vets to salute, I turn off all tools and face the screen, wait for them, stand upright, and when they salute, I return the salute. This is very difficult to share, but your program has helped me so much, I just want to say thank you.

You remind me of my cousin Louie. He was there three years. Finally shot 3rd year. I'd listen to his stories all the time sounds like you. I miss him he passed away two years ago. Like you incredible human being and now your human doing. Welcome home good job. As a American Indian I know you danced with the spirits welcome home brother. Spirit was here before religion. You know that more then any of us.

Two things that creeped me out about Vietnam, the density of the jungle, the booby traps and tunnels, and the fact that you never knew who was friend or foe. Also, it was about body count, not about taking territory. The nice lady who washed your clothes on base might be laying mortars to kill you by night. I was never there, but my brother Jimmy was KIA in 1968. I got so I couldn’t watch it on TV, especially after losing Jimmy.

My Uncle Allen was a medic was the 101st Airborne Div in 1971 Quang Tri Province, Vietnam. Watching your videos truly reminds me of him. Unfortunately he passed away in 2000 but I will always respect him and what he did in that war. Vietnam veterans are my favorite vets this country has to offer.

I was there when you were on my 2nd tour, so I believe every thing you said, we are supposed to have ptsd, but the Vietnamese evaluator for the VA only allowed me 50%- -I was in Tam Ky and Kham Duc , captured and released my first time, Dong Ha, CUA Viet, Gio Linh,Luan Anh on my second time-been there done that, fuel dump, ammo dump,suicide hill-I wasTip Top Alpha, so I know what a shock wave is- blood, brains, guts, what-you name it-but I made it

I am an Aussie and my Father was a Warrant Officer in Korea and Vietnam, so I grew up the first 14 yrs of my life with the war in Vietnam. I thank you for these interviews but mostly I honour and thank all these men, may God Bless them, Tammy

I was in 3/7 India Company 3rd plt. eventually Platoon Sgt. yes a Grunt... Rifleman....MOS 0311... this was in 82...to see all the battle ribbons on our Guide on/flag, gave us a feeling of pride and unstoppable power....the rich unit history of the Marine battalion was undeniably ingrained in your soul you understood very quickly that one had an obligation to uphold to those souls that passed before you holding that same guide on

I am a Vietnam Veteran. I said that to a high school kid once. He just looked at me and said, “I’ve never heard of Vietnam” are you shitting me? “It’s said that you die twice, the first is on the day that you actually die; the second is on the day that everyone forgets about you.” 😢 (Death is so final.)
