    What a delightful reaction! Thanks. The beatboxer (vocal percussionist) is Layne Stein--Layne also arranged this for Voice Play. Ely is actually pronounced "Ellie" (like Ellie Mae from the Beverly Hillbillies).

    It is so much fun to watch you watching and listening to them. Trust me, no one catches everything the first time. Geoff and Layne split the arrangements just about 50 / 50. Whichever of them does the arrangement also does the story board, the production, all his vision. Eli does the lights and most of the special effects. Even when a piece starts simply, it will go off the charts. I know you haven't started on Geoff's solo work (he started that during the pandemic). He has three Halloween pieces, The Headless Horseman, Monster Mash, and this year's Ghost Riders in the Sky. I am following you on this journey!

    Thanks for sticking with it and coming back to do another VoicePlay song. Eli is pronounced El-ee (short for Eliezer). Layne arranged this one - from what I recall, he's done all of the Halloween songs, while Geoff does the Christmas songs. There was a real crunch on this one, he flew to Nashville to film Lauren before Hurricane Ian hit. He lost power and it slowed down the editing... but... amazing. I still like his first one this year best (In the Hall of the Mountain King) but I really love this one too. It's hard to have favorites when they're all so good!

    And he had just finished his crazy Mountain King! Unusual for them to do two in a row, but a Patron in a higher tier said that they had another in the works but the vocalist couldn’t make it so Layne swooped on with this.

    Lauren is also known as The Stairwell Siren as she goes into her apartment building's stairwell and sings some creepy songs that all her neighbors can hear. She did a solo of this song (orig. Korean) which went viral on TikTok. VoicePlay contacted her to see if she would be interested in doing it again but with 4 other guys this time. Aurora below me covers getting it filmed. Cesar, the guy in the crystal ball is a very animated singer and had to sit still to keep his head inside the ball! The beatboxer is Layne, Geoff is the bass, Cesar a bari-tenor, and Eli is high tenor but can sing bass if he needs to.

    @@SuttonStops Be careful what you wish for! The very beginning of this video, with the slower tempo and heavy reverb on Lauren's voice sounds a lot like what she sings in the stairwell - and it's pretty creepy! VoicePlay's minis channel has a video of them "accompanying" her in her KZread video for about a verse, and it's yet another different version of the song.

    The members of Voiceplay are insanely talented and have incredible ranges. Geoff actually has a 5 octave range which you'll hear some of in Oogie Boogie's Song. Layne Stein (the beatboxer) co-owns a studio called PattyCake Productions with Tony Wakim a former Voiceplay member. Voiceplay often films there, which is why they're sets are so detailed. Eli (pronounced Ellie) often helps with the lighting design and Layne and Geoff trade off doing the arrangements.

    This isn't an original song it is an old Japanese song that in of itself is very haunting and Lauren Paley, the feature in this video, is nicknamed the Stairwell Siren because she blew up on TikTok because she would go into the stairwell of her apartment building and sing it as she heard people enter below to try to scare them

  • @catwhowalksbyhimself

    It's only ten years old, and it's Korean, not Japanese. It's a KZread original using a Vocaloid to do the singing. Three years later a channel who makes English versions of Vocaloid songs covered it, and that is the version that other have covered in English since. The original animated video tells the story of a little girl possessed by a malevolent spirit forcing a boy to play a sadistic game of hide and seek as it taunts and toys with him. tricking him into thinking that it's looking in the closet, when it really knows he's hiding behind the desk instead. The now possessed boy then goes looking for the next victim, the shredded remains of the previous host showing his future fate.

  • @janetdw

    @janetdw

    @@catwhowalksbyhimself I have listened to both and the Korean version is creeper to me because I focused more on the terrifying animation. I understand from another viewer that the story is based on an old Japanese cautionary tale. Those old fairy tales are a far cry from the Disney versions and were often dark, so it wouldn’t surprise me if that were the case.

  • @catwhowalksbyhimself

    @catwhowalksbyhimself

    @@janetdw The "cautionary tale" is actually a creepypasta, and also relatively new. It also doesn't really fit the song or story at all. There's some resemblance, but I don't believe they are directly connected. That's just a theory. The oldest record of One Man Hide and Seek is 2008, so older than the song, but it's definitely under 20 years old, and likely 15. Not an old story at all, and not a "cautionary tale."

    Great reaction. Voiceplay are known as both The Theater Kids and Halloween Kings. Lauren made this song famous on tiktok singing it in her apartment building stairwell. Voiceplay saw it and asked her if she wanted to collaborate with and for Halloween. This is the result. She is known as the Stairwell Siren on too because she sings various songs. It has an awesome echo there. She started doing that to scare her neighbors. I fell down the Voiceplay/Geoff Castellucci rabbit hole very hard in April and never looked back. Geoff has his own channel where he sings solo. His new Halloween video is... Ghost Riders In The Sky. He has a bunch of other videos as well. No matter what you choose from Voiceplay or Geoff you can't go wrong. Everything they sing is awesome. And they're not afraid to go out of the box.

    I’ve been waiting for you to do this! Knowing how you like the ride, I knew you would appreciate it. Lauren did a phenomenal job. Her full version is slow like the beginning- very creepy. She has several TikTok duets, one is on VoicePlay’s mini channel where they provide the background vocals. Another really creepy one is with Bobby Bass. This is the same set that is used in the PattyCake Productions piece Villains at the Haunted Mansion. (Well worth viewing, as are their Hocus Pocus themed videos and original series Villains Lair based on Disney villains trying to regain power.) Lot of tiny details: Lauren: her demented eyes turn red just before the banshee. She is semitransparent- you can see embers through her -Layne’s crazy makeup! A LOT of people had he and Geoff mixed up. Lots of black food color in some sort of gel for his teeth. When he laughs, the inside of his mouth is black. Rick Underwood usually does their makeup on these. He is a genius. Layne did NOT like the airbrushing (tickles😂) -Grim Grinning Ghost busts appear in the bookshelf behind Geoff (who had to crouch the whole time) -Eli is unstable Alexander NITROkoff on a keg of TNT/nitroglycerin (BOOM!) (“stretching” portrait behind him) -Cesar is the medium Madam Leota at the seance table. Was he singing in his head voice?😂 -Elizabeth Zharoff (Charismatic Voice) provided background eerie tones. This is the list of their sp👀my season videos: -Geoff (bass) Ghost Riders in the Sky He also has done Monster Mash and the Headless Horseman. -VoicePlay covered four songs from Nightmare before Christmas (Oogie Boogie, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, This is Halloween and What’s This), Superstition by Stevie Wonder, I’ve Got Friends on the Other Side from Disney’s Princess and the Frog, Once Upon a Dream and Grim Grinning Ghosts from the ride at Disney World (and this year‘s Hide and Seek ). Although not Halloween songs, their Hall of the Mountain King is pretty spooky as is Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3!

He is also a member of the Bass Gang which is four (or more) really low basses singing together. They just notified us that they also did a version of DingDong with Lauren. I believe it comes out to patrons on the 21st and to everyone else the 24th or 25th. I’ve heard some of their other songs I think it will be more on the spooky side.
