Voiced vs. Unvoiced Sounds: What’s the difference?

Using your vocal chords to teach sounds can be a great tool! Not only do kids think it’s fun to feel their vocal chords vibrate, but it also helps with improving phonemic awareness.
When students learn the difference between voiced and unvoiced sounds, it provides a tangible literacy resource they can use independently.

But for me even unvoiced sounds are causing vibration to the throat

think of "unvoiced" (s) sounds (z) as (z) a soft (s) whisper (s) , whereas (z) some (s) times (z) the sound (s) will be produced (s) differently. example of hers with (s) and (z) above

true but for voiced ones you can't pronounce it without the cords ,you are forced to use your vocal cords , un voiced you can use or not use your vocal cords .

One of my students mixes up the sounds /g/ and /d/. It seems odd bc they aren’t produced the same with exception of voiced/unvoiced. Any thoughts on this one or just a one-off that I need to consistently work on with him? Thank you for your videos!!!!

I think they're similar enough with the shape of the mouth that it makes sense a student would do this. When you say "mixes up," is this orally or on paper?

I teach preschoolers in Spain. We're following a book that includes phonics lessons. But honestly I find myself unable to teach that (and many other things on top of that) because 1. I dont have formal training in pedagogy (I studied history and translation) 2. The kids haven't even gained fluency in their mother language yet, let alone a foreign one. My peers insist I stick to what the book says but I often find myself not able to hold their attention because the kids find the activities from the book (like phonics) difficult and usually end up getting bored.

Hey! Preschool may be a bit young to really bring in full blown phonics. I suggest starting with some phonological awareness activities first!
