The Righteous Brothers had a big hit with "Unchained Melody" in 1965. Home Free did such a beautiful rendition of this classic song. The video in prison is very fitting as this song was originally written for the 1955 prison film "Unchained". The film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or finishing his sentence and returning to his wife & family. The song focuses on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time".

The story about the Righteous Brothers version of this song is interesting. Bobby Hatfield wanted to do the song and Bill Medley didn't think the song would be popular. That is why the song is a Bobby Hatfield solo. There is a video on the internet of them visiting a variety show on TV and Bobby is going to sing the song and the host asks Bill Medley what he does when Bobby performs the song. Bill Says something like, "I get a drink, find a dark corner and kick myself." The host then asks him, "Why do you do that?". Bill glances over at Bobby and says, "I didn't think the song would be popular." and laughs.

Love Tim leading in his bass and handing it off to Austin to finish the song. An amazing arrangement, production, filming with the shadows etc. Home Free just had a home run.

Not gonna lie, it hurt my heart a little when I saw them "in jail", but they went to the original format of the song. It was from a movie about a guy in jail. This is now my favorite version of this song. I think it's gorgeous!

Yes, this is a good one. I loved Tim’s and Austin’s solos too. Loved those harmonies. Loved the black and white film. This was written for a movie Unchained so hence the prison. I liked the words above the typewriter too. Good reaction Lauren. 😀

When I saw Austin cover this solo, I commented then that Home Free needed to cover this as a group. I knew it would be good, but I wasn't prepared for how good it would sound. This was great.

So..a little back story; this song came out in 1955. It was first sung in the 1955 movie "unchained" hence the name unchained melody. Unchained was a black and white film about men in prison. I love Home Free's homage to that first song. Unchained melody wasso popular that it was sung by so many different artists during the next few years that there was a version of it released almost every month. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers wanted to release it on the flip side of one of their singles. It was so popular that nobody remembers the song that was supposed to be released! Bobby really made it popular when he sang it on the Ed Sullivan show in 1965. The other brother, Bill Medley, is credited with producing the version sung by Bobby Hatfield. It continues to be an enduring hit.

That arrangement is PERFECTION ! I love the doo-wop style is perfect to as the original is from a 1955 movie called "Unchqained" about a frustrated love between a couple with the boy in jail/ The B&W film noir style and the 50's style arrangement are Home Free paying homage to the original and not to the Righteous Brother mega hit from 1965. Home Free did it's homework and one of the big reasons we love them.

The song is from the prison movie "Unchained" made in the mid 50's. One of the prisoners sang this, but no one could do it like Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers, who released it in 1965. Also, Tim Foust has released a Doo Wop album, I think it's called "Pieces of Me", where he shows off his high falsetto.

Great reaction Lauren. Loved your enthusiasm and your knowledge of this style of music. Yup another great song cover from them and it totally fits with their obvious love of this style of "Doo Wop" music from the fifties. Might be nice if you were to check out their song "Blue Ain't Your Colour" which showcases both Rob and Chance as well as some great Motown/Temptations style choreography and styling. It's a cover of a Keith Urban song that has a bit of a retro vibe to it, but they took it the whole way.

Hello. Just some info. for you. this song was written as a musical score by 2 men ? sorry forgot names. It was for a 1950's movie in which the main character was in jail. Hence the black and white feel; and the jail scene. thanks.

They are in jail since the song was originally written in 1955 for a prison film named Unchained. That is also why it's in black and white. We didn't have color tv in the 50's. The song is 67 years old and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century. Home Free as always honors the original while making it their own.

How does that affect her credibility. Tim Foust is currently releasing a Doo Wop themed solo album, and it's him who's spoken about it like that. And this version of the song does have that kind of backing vocal sound. So is it her just adding a 'py' to it that reduced her credibility. Because she did actually say "Doo Woppy" not just "Do Oppy" as you wrote in your comment and I went back to check to make sure. Just don't get your complaint.
