    Greate tutorials. I am new to mixing but seem to be able to get it pretty good in a small band situation but am having trouble with a lot of echo when speakers are using a lavalier mic. I know it is the nature of such an omni mic and the room (church) accoustics but is there anything I can do on the desk to compensate? Mark

    Haha more coffee is always good... until it means you're in the restroom instead of behind the console 😂 It's easy to get in a rut and "normalize" the sounds we get on vocals, even if they sound a bit off. Keep up the good work Freeman Diaz!

    Thanks for all those tutorials. I have a question. Do you have any tips on how set up a microphone that would be used by multiple people for exemple for praying. Some people are shouting and other are whispering in the microphone so it's always a trouble for us to deal with the dynamic range.

  • @AttawayAudio

    @AttawayAudio

    I know the problem well. It's like whack-a-mole. You just have to set some general settings and ride the fader for each person. Some people will sound drastically different, or hold the mic in a different place so that affects the tone a bunch. It's an exercise in quick adjustments. Although if you have a multiband compressor like the Waves C4 or C6, that can help to even out people's tones with the "voiceover" setting (but I roll up the low-mid crossover to 250 from the preset). That might be a little detailed for what you're wanting, but hey, it's friday and I've had too much coffee.

    Amazing as always ! Thanks a lot. Question here : playing in a venue(6 nights a week, 7 piece band) where there is no sound man. I take care of it on my own . We do have time on rehearsal to tweak the sound, but I find it difficult to call it done and then go on stage at night and ''hope for the best''. Over 150 song, from Elvis to Justin Beiber, dinner set to high energy up tempo stuff. We are all over the place. Doing my best to ajust the balance as needed, but the challenge is, I'm right next to the drum set(where the board is) and I'm playing at the same time ! lol ! Any tips or tricks that could help me step up my game would be much appreciated ! Have a wonderful day :)

    Tried a few thing here, a microphone in the room that I can blend into my in ear monitor to have an idea of what it sound like in the room. Also sending the ''phone out'' of the board into a channel and then I can use it as well in my IEM. I'm using that as a reference point.

  • @AttawayAudio

    That's a tricky one. It's like saying "how do I take great pictures while I'm driving a bus across the continental divide?" Your solutions are creative, but you're never going to get it sounding as tight as if you had a dedicated person at the board. Although, if you had virtual sound check and made a new snapshot/scene for each song, you'd get closer. That's all I got bro. Thanks for the question! And keep making music!

    James, we have been using the XR-18 for a year but recently moved into our renovated church. I am the drummer/sound guy by using an ipad while on the kit. How would be the best way to record a virtual sound check using Aria on the ipad? Where is best to pick off the signals pre, post ect using usb outs?

  • @AttawayAudio

    Always pickoff pre-processing for virtual sound check. Sorry you’ve got to do double duty! That’s rough. I can’t even judge tone and play bass at the same time and that’s just one note 😂

    Hello Mr Attaway I have a question re mikes and singers.. should each singer in a mutilple solo performance event have a seperate mike that has been tuned and EQed? How does one “ share” mikes between singers?? Meena

  • @AttawayAudio

    @AttawayAudio

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Meena! The best option is to have each person have their own mic. But in the case you can’t do that, you can save an EQ preset in the digital console, or if you’re on an analog board, you can write down the settings between people during sound check. Or just get really good at changing it quickly (which is what I do 🤷🏻‍♂️)

    When it comes to deessing, I seem so have some problems. I use a Behringer X 32 at my church. In that deesser, there are two settings to the deessing; I can compress with a low band or with a high band. When I attempt to use the deesser on my pastor, I end up making it sound very unnatural (that is that his “S” disappears and it seems that whenever the deesser activates it mutes him for a micro second). I know that logically speaking, I can just not use the deesser so aggressively, but when I tone it down, I go back to square one. I have a feeling that I am using the low and high band the wrong way. In short, what does low/high band mean?

    It's a tricky one to dial in! The low and high are the frequency bands, so high is more in the 8-10kHz range, while low is more in the 4-6kHz range. The de-esser on the X32/M32 is a great one, so you're right - it's easy to overdo it. Just try and dial it in precisely. And maybe keep the insert before the compressor? Or try after it. There's no rule here 🤷‍♂️

    Attaway Audio Also, maybe this isn’t the right video to request this, but, it would be pretty cool if you make a video involving how to EQ our master buss in a live session. The way I go about it, with my limited experience, is, I just simply cut where the peaks appear (while the band is playing in service). I’m sure there’s much more science behind all of this but I would love if you give me a starting point, since sometimes I notice that I end up having much more peaks than EQ bands on my master buss. Thanks in advance

    Hi. Try adding the deesser as an insert rather than through the fx bus. I have an X18 and though I haven't had chance to mess around with the two options, on a quick comparison, I did notice quite a difference in quality. i.e. much better as an insert. Good Luck
