Latvia's entry is meant to be as a lullaby for the overwhelmed world. The song combines both anxiety, panic and a harmonic lullaby, which is needed to cope with the surrounding stress.

I think your reaction to this song sadly gives me a glimpse of how people will react to this song for the first time in May more... It's my favorite entry this year. The lyrics are basically our perspective of coexisting with people who are facing the worst of humanity, war, and chaos. "Aijā" is like Spain's "Eaea" which is the onomatopoeia for lullabies. "Please don't wake up" thru singing lullabies is a metaphor to our attempt to comfort these people in these hard times, that even sometimes, we, too could be overwhelmed by these events (thus the simplicity of the lyrics) and just hoping to "say the right words at the right times" (Also the verses are in 5/4 while it switches to 6/8 in the chorus which is so cool in a songwriting perspective!)

I also think, unfortunately, that many people will interpret the song that way. It's an emotional song. Deep and sad but beautiful at the same time. Love the song. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Czech Republic, Estonia and Latvia.

The song definitely is a lullaby. Aijā is about trying to protect somebody from seeing the world in the cruel way that it actually is. That's why they don't want their innocent beloved to wake up from the way they perceive the world in their dreams. "Aijā" is a word without a real translation that is something Latvians sing to their children as a lullaby. I find the lyrics quite beautiful and tragic at the same time with how much anxiety they express from the protector.

Hi Georgina, I do appreciate your analysis and respect your views on the song, but for me this is a winner, both in terms of music and especially the lyrics. Let me try to explain to you what I inferred from the song and finally conclude with what the band wanted to portray. The time signature of the verses is 5/4 (Which sounds odd while listening for the first time) and 3/4 for chorus. I imagined a setting of a father, sitting with his young child in the living room, its dark withe the lights switched off and the TV is switched on. A setting where there is horror, war and ill parts of the society being portrayed through the TV. Footages of terrorism, earthquakes and war being shown in the news. The little kid, calls for their dad, but the TV is too loud for the dad to notice. The kid falls asleep. "You said some words Didn't hear you fall asleep People were talking louder From my TV screen I heard them scream It was too dark to see" The dad looks over to see his kid asleep and now feels the urge to protect the kid from this sad world of war and injustice, the world which he sees on a daily basis through his own eyes and through media. "Don't cry I'll try to Say the right words at the right times Sing you lullabies Please, don't wake up Wake up" The dad assures the kid, while the kid is still asleep, that he'll do whatever he can in his capabilities to protect his kid. He'll say the right words, sing lullabies but begs the kid to not wake up to this sad world. (Also, as you were not sure in the video, the second "Wake up" is just repetition of the phrase and does not mean to wake up) "You still think we live in A world so beautiful You see, I think I don't believe In this stuff anymore" As a child, the world is very pretty but as the father is a grown up man, he sees the world as truly as it stands. "Aijā, aijā Saldā miegā Aijā, aijā Saldā miegā" Aija means a lullaby sound in latvian. By repeating Aija, parents make a child sleep. Such phrases are present in many languages including mine, but I'm not able to draw a parallel in English. "Salda Miega" means Sweet dreams in Latvian. There are lot of Wake up repetitions which may easily be misunderstood while reading the lyrics, but he is just repeating the phrase, the main phrase being "Don't wake up" The band clarified that the song can be applied to anyone, (not just a child in this case) as a protective lullaby to safeguard your loved ones from this cruel world. Hope this helps! :)

Lady: it's a poem, it doesn't have to be read literally. It's a whole package between lyrics, melody and the band. The song clearly talks about there being something very dark that he doesn't want another person to see and that's why he sings a lullaby for him. Also the song by Blanca Paloma from Spain speaks of a lullaby , based from Federico García Lorca poems. The Serbian proposal also speaks about don't want to wake up and still sleeping , cause the reality it's too dark.

Hi! Great reaction. You had some questions and well, the song has a really deep and beautiful meaning, let me explain. The word "Aijā" is a Latvian word for the action of putting somebody to sleep, so it actually is a lullaby. Usually, we don't think of lullabies when hearing more rock-inspired songs, but I think it works great and it fits the topic of the song very well. The song is a lullaby for the world and for those, who have hard times right now, for example because of war. It talks about anxiety, stress and other problems. And you are right, the time signature in this is a bit different, for example it has a 5/4 beat in the verses. Many people don't like it when listening to it the first time, but after listening to it several times, it really grows on people. I like the song a lot because I can really connect to it and everyone can too in his/her own way. So I don't think the lyrics are too few, but I think they're simple and effective. Especially the chorus - "Don't cry, I'll try to say the right words at the right times, Sing you lullabies, Please, don't wake up, wake up" gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it. Others might think it's repetitive, I think it's beautiful. The last part of the song is in Latvian. "Aijā, aijā, saldā miegā" is a common phrase in Latvian lullabies and shows again how it's a song for the world that needs to be calmed down. It's my personal favourite in this year so far and I hope it will qualify, it's Latvia's best entry in years :)

I've searched about the lyrics, it's a lullaby (we have two lullabies this year, this one and Spain's) and I've read something about it's not a lullaby for a child, it's for adults as well, but I've not understood all the meaning. This song is a lullaby to a child basically. The outside world is so loud the TV is loud because the news are so horrible, so don't wake up child please don't wake up. His repetition of wake up is an emphasis of don't wake up he's not saying to not wake up and then wake up as that wouldn't make sense. It's basically a father who is trying to protect his child from the horrors of the outside world.

Well, you kind of did understand the lyrics. "Aija" is a Latvian word for soothing someone, like singing a lullaby to a child. And that’s what the song is also about: Soothing. "Don‘t cry, I‘ll try to say the right words at the right time; sing you lullabies". I thought the message was pretty clear from these lines. It‘s also speaking about the feelings of Latvian people and people in all of Eastern Europa the day that Russia invaded Ukraine; the fear they felt at the horror of what is happening to Ukrainians and the need to have someone who can take away their worries, like when your parents sang you to sleep as a child.

Lyrics are in english originally already (except for the very ending)... it's not a translation from Latvian or any other language... You found one of those lyrics that have mistakes in them - in the first line it's actually "didn't HEAR you fall asleep", not "didn't FEAR you fall asleep" The message in lyrics isn't very clear, that is true, but you can at least get an idea... they're actually so open, that everyone can find their own meaning to these lyrics and most meanings will make sense. Even lyric reviewers have found different meanings to different parts of this song as very likely... As for the message of this song - it's actually quite simple. It's a lullaby to the overwhelmed world (different use of music is actually a representations of "noises" (as in issue after issue) this crazy world makes while the calm ending is the lullaby part). But like I said, anyone can find their own meaning to this song - the minimalistic and not very explicit lyrics allow you to do that. P.S. As for the timings - I'm not a musician myself, so idk this myself, but I've seen people comment that they hear 5/4 and 3/4 (or 6/8) mostly.

Behind the simplicity of this lyrics are deeper meaning and conversation. It could be of course just a coincidence, but it's not. The title already suggest that the Light is waking up, or you are just about to see the light because You're waking up = Sudden Lights, meaning a recognition about the world or yourself. The first instrument is a drum machine, which has a recurrent beat, the fingers keep starting to play it from the end of the keys and returning to the middle. Then the singer appear in this circle, the Lights are already On behind him. After the voices in the TV screen, the two guitarist stepping in, and playing into the their lapms, giving sound to them. After a while all of the lights came on, there's no way to turning back because of the recognition was fatal, even the sleeping would be easier but still not true. When there's the big instrumental break, it symbolizes the war inside of the human and between the human-cruel world, when all you want is to break the chains and get free and happy. The singer returns in the end on his own language, overcame all these happenings and emotions, lowering his voice, and the lights are soon going off, meaning the upcoming sleeping back, dying or reaching the freedoom, it all depends what the listener who were sung this Lullaby is going to choose. At the start of my comment I said it's even a conversation, but it's not said with the personal pronoun that who is talking to who: the singer and a beloved one, or the singer and the singer, a beloved one and the mad world, the mad world and the singer, or God and the singer. "Don't wake up, wake up" Even it's easier and less pain not to wake up, you should wake up to see it. And someone will be always there to guide you, to protect you as a Light, to found the Light behind the noises and the harmful reality. It's just so complex yet simple, you could imagine every stage of your life in it, dependig where you are heading to, and that meaning you will get back from it. Wonderful stuff my friends!

IDK, I hear his pronounciation clearly. Metric typical to Radiohead, e.g. P.S. Bassist and guitarist play some parts observing each other when the bassist has to change rythm and melody and stops following the guitar line. That's normally breakdown or outro. They do that because distortion makes ear-in system unusable.

It is for sure not a winner, but Latvia is not aiming for a win. A qualification to the final would be like a victory for Latvia, but they like to participate either way, even if they do not qualify. To explain the lyrics, I will be quoting someone else who once commented on a youtube video, as it is the best explanation I have seen. Personally I understood what it is about from the first listen, but I get that some people might have hard time understanding the deeper meaning of simple lyrics, especially if they might not understand his accent in first place. So here am I quoting someone named Bluebell, I would add that a 4/3 time is used to make it sound anxious, to portray the anxiety of someone or something. "I heard them scream; it was too dark to see" it's unclear if this refers to the tv people or to the world at large, and it's also unclear whether "it was too dark to see" is what the people were saying or a separate observation of the singer. Coupled with the first lyric, we get the impression of conflict between society and individual, closeness and detachment, confusion of senses and clarity of speech. This is greatly enhanced by the digital inputs, which sound irregular yet repeat like a heartbeat, and which add another degree of detachment. - "I'll try to say the right words at the right times" the stresses in this line fall on both the "right"s. Rather than focusing on the important part (words and times), the singer is preoccupied with "getting it right", adding to the sense of desperation. - "Please, don't wake up, wake up!" Much like the earlier line from the first verse, the structure of the lyric is a trick- we can't tell whether the second "wake up" is an extension and repeat of "don't wake up" (typical for a song chorus), or if it's actually a rebuttal to the words right before it (don't wake up, but DO wake up). So much emotional conflict. (I would add that it is most likely the second - it is better to not wake up so that you don't have to face the stress of the event, emotions or the world in general, but also do wake up so that you have more control of the situation) - "beautiful" and "anymore" are paralleled in the structure of the second verse. The first instance of dragging out "beautiful" is wistful and bittersweet, while dragging out "anymore" completely turns it on its head- it's all bitter now. Enhanced by the light vocal delivery on "beautiful" compared to the darker "anymore" and the little admission on that line of the rushed "you see" and casual "this stuff". - The instrumental climax is when words, which have been opaque throughout, finally fail (exemplified by the scream at the end) and the music is left alone to express the depth of the song's turmoil. This leads to the end- when English fails, the singer can only turn to his mother tongue, that rawest form of language. (I add - he sings "aijā, aijā, saldā miegā", which is a lullaby a mother would sing to her baby in Latvia, it is not an exact lullaby, but he is using the words of a lullaby and singing it in a different, original melody)

I do understand that majority of Eurovision viewers will not pay attention to the lyrics and will not understand the song completely, but perhaps they will mention the meaning of the song during the postcard, so the viewers will be set on the right track during the performance.

I keep my fingerscrossed🤞 that you get a chance to be live in Liverpool some way! - If anyone knows how or has an extra ticket they don't need, please think of Georgina! - You totally deserve it and it would be cool having a video in which you are reporting from Liverpool! 😊 I know chances aren't super high but hope the universe will find a way.

I think the controversial lyrics were intentional. It's as if the person is overwhelmed by the mess of modern world events and cannot decide if they want their loved ones not to wake up or maybe they want someone to wake up and fix the world. They promise to be good and say the right words at the right times, but not sure if it will help. And the lullaby itself is just the very ending of the song. So, the entire song is about desperation and confusion, and finally, it culminates with the promised lullaby.

Hi! Have you ever listened to a band called A-ha? You’ll probably know them from Take on Me? The lead singer, Morton Harket has one of the best voices ever. The band as a whole blow my mind. There’s only eleven albums to work through 😘

Hello! Please try to have your video and audio in sync. It's really distracting when what you see doesn't fit what you hear :) It really felt like you were trying hard not to understand the rather simple lyrics and message of shielding a kid from the harsh reality of the world. Also his pronunciation was quite clear compared to other entries this year (Loreen's mumbling comes to mind), and complaining about him repeating "wake up" at the end of the line, when he's clearly emphasizing "don't wake up". Then you went about ridiculing their playing and how they move. Perhaps you were being sincere, but it came across as you trying to smear the artist and the song without a real reason and making stuff up as you went. Sorry if it was honest misunderstanding

As someone who's presenting as a vocal coach I'm surprised you missed the idea that the musical arrangement was supposed to tell the rest of the story, hence why simplistic lyrics. But I guess this also resonates more with someone who's experienced anxiety, overwhelm and more in recent years. This is how it feels in my head at all times, not a lot of words, but constant noise.. This song is a gem!
