Kirstin Maldonado, on the left typically takes the mezzo role. Mitch Grassi, next one over, is a counter-tenor and will typically cover over the top of Kirstie. Scott Hoying, in the middle, is a baritone, but he can go from bass to tenor, depending on the song. Kevin Olusola (K.O.), second from the right is a superb beatboxer and cellist, but he also sometimes comes in as a tenor. Avi Kaplan on the right is a bass (or basso profundo). Avi is no longer with the group, as he has gone solo. He has been replaced with Matt Sallee. Please try their cover of Sound of Silence.

Pentatonix almost always has those little surprises in their arrangements of well known songs. It gives it the style they are known for, keeping the original emotion but also giving the audience something new. They also have several original songs too.

💥More PENTATONIX REACTIONS PLEASE! 👉Kirstie Maldonado - mezzo soprano/ alto 👉Mitch Grassi - counter tenor 👉Scott Hoying - baritone/bass/falsetto 👉Kevin Olusula- beatboxer/tenor/human android 👉Avi Kaplan- bass/ baritone (member from 2011 to 2017) 👉Matt Sallee- replaced Avi as bass/baritone 💥Winners of The Sing Off season 3 all their performances are here on you tube on mrduckbear11 channel. 👉👉Scott, Kirstie and Mitch are childhood friends from TX they grew up doing musical theater and coir and in high school were known as The Trio (videos of them here on you tube) 👉Scott moved to California after high school and joined the So. Cal Vocals in UCLA. He was encouraged to audition for The Sing Off. Scott contacted Kirstie and Mitch to join him but he was advised to get a bass and beatboxer to make the trio sound fuller. 👉Scott was introduced to Avi who is from California and he was also told about a cello-beatboxer that has a viral video on You Tube. Kevin is from Kentucky but was at YALE University graduated Pre Med his goal was to be a doctor. Scott helped fund a trip to CA to join them for the audition..😅They ALL met in person as a group a day before the audition...👉Scott thought of the name PENTATONIX for their 5 harmonies... THE REST IS MAGIC They have won 3 grammys so far!!

Great reaction. Thanks for the in depth analysis. You touched on a subject at the end of the video that I think is the reason for the success of Pentatonix. Yes, they have great voices. But it is the arrangements and how they know where each individual voice fits in that makes their "signature" sound. The three main singers "The Trio" , Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie, have been singing together since they were 8 to 10 years old. They grew up together and are best friends. They do most of their own arranging with the help of Ben Bram. Please react to more Pentatonix. Thanks again.

react to more! i can understand how this might be too much analysis for some but i love your style. for the background i love scott (tall blond haired baritone) all of them have pretty great ranges in their own right (with the possible exception of kevin the black gentlemen whom you thought had the lower voice, he's a great singer but he's mostly just incredibly talented with beatboxing that he didn't show off in this one) but scott has a range i'd die for. he can go all the way down to a c#2 d2 and his eb2s sound really beautiful and warm. then he can also hit a ton of bflat 4s in a very full belt and even b4 maybe c5! avi has a crazy voice...regularly able to sing all the way down to an a1! probably a full octave below what you and i can sing as tenors.

I agree with this, especially with a group like PTX. Much of the magic in their performances is the ebb and flow they create which is lost when it's paused so often. Although it would mean a longer video, I definitely think you get more from it if you listen all the way through first

I'm always late to the party, but Mitch Grassi is the dude with the dark hair that's second to the left. From left to right it's Kirstin Maldonado, a mezzo-soprano (I think? I keep seeing that), Mitch Grassi, a counter-tenor, Scott Hoying, a tenor (but one with a really fabulous range so that when the bass singer has a lead part, he pitches in on the bass notes), Kevin Olusola is the beat boxer, but also has a really lovely high tenor when the song doesn't need a drum beat, and Avi Kaplan, probably the most beautifully sounding bass (or basso profundo, depending on who you ask) I have ever heard, but who also has a pretty good range where he can sing higher notes like you heard in this song at the end.

I'm glad you paused often to comment. That's what I love to get from a vocal coach! This was a perfect song for you to start with, since it's a true live performance. Some of those interesting chords were made possible by the "5th voice"--Kevin (second from right) is the beatboxer but he sang this time. As others have mentioned, his singing voice is actually a high tenor! Scott, the baritone, is the one who often goes down to bass notes when the bass has a solo in a higher range. (Avi, whose training is in opera as a basso profundo, is singing here; Scott does the same when the current bass, Matt, has a solo.) Sorry, didn't mean to write so much! I enjoyed your reaction and will be watching for more.

It's cool to watch a reaction without stopping. EXAMPLE: I saw a musician react to them by watching it all the way through, then taking a moment to go back through and pick out the parts that she wanted to discuss. Why such negativity? If you dint like his reviews then don’t watch it. He’s a vocal coach and goes into details Scott the actual arrangement. It seems you are looking for a reaction rather than a review

@@lauriep2018 As it was called "Vocal Coach Reacts ...", I WAS looking for a reaction. And I couldn't possibly know that I didn't like it until I watched it. But don't worry, I won't comment on anymore of these "reviews".

@@lauriep2018 You seem to not know the difference between a review and a reaction also. You see this is what happens when youtubers lie about what their video is.

My only criticism of you vocal coaches reactions is that you destroy the continuity of the performance! You need to play the entire performance and then go back and repeat the piece with your instruction!
