'You're gone, gone, gone away, I watched you disappear'. This song is very emotional for me. At the time it was released, my husband was suffering a rapid, aggressive illness and before he died he lost his hearing completely. This was one of the last songs he heard. He kept referring to 'the song about the ships' and now every time I hear it, I'm taken back to those dark, sweet days of caring for him and the sadness of watching him disappear.

Of Monsters And Men are unique. That´s why they are not an example of icelandic music. You´ll find all kind of music going on in Iceland and plenty of it. Thanks Beth for having OFMAM on your show. Thank you and best wishes from Reykjavik Iceland :)

I agree. They are this kind of fusion that can happen when brilliant musicians meet up and think "we can make this work". Happy Christmas from a Norwegian brother
I've been a fan of Monsters and Men for over a decade. they have such a uniqued sound. Nanna the lead singer wrote this song as she writes most of their songs
I love this song! Dirty Paws is also beautiful and always reminds me of Walter Mitty longboarding through Iceland.

5 years ago I was at a festival and wanted to see Florence and the Machine and got to the stage early. The band that preceded them on the stage was OMAM. Had never heard of them, and wow, what a show! ❤️
Nanna's voice has definitely changed over the years. It had a lot more uniqueness early on, especially live. Her voice seems much more polished these days. I had the chance to catch them live in 2016 and it was amazing. They are my favorite band, though Nanna is currently doing a stint as a solo artist.
I love Nanna and Ragnar's duets. I discovered them nine years ago, just a month or so before a trip to Iceland, but purely by coincidence. You're right about the Mumford and Sons vibe. That and The Lumineers.

When they sing in unison, particularly on this song, their voices blend so perfectly (and beautifully).
This song hits me hard. It makes me think of two distinct, but similar, things. One is the surface level being about death and specifically someone who has died and the person left behind is having a difficult time with it. The other thing it makes me think of is the one person is still alive, but is losing themselves to something like dementia or Alzheimer's, with the other person is doing their best to comfort them while they fade away.
This band are so good, but you already know that. So many unusual eye catching videos to go with unusual ear catching songs, but the one that stands out for me is the lyric video for I of the storm. The performer is 'just' an actor, a guy miming to a female vocalist. It shouldnnt work, but it does, I cant think of this brilliant song without thinking of their face and their performance. Remarkable.
I'm happy you found OMAM,they're fantastic...please please please could you react to King and Lionheart?? You'll just love her voice in this
This is one of my favorite songs. Such a unique song thats so jolly with the instruments but so emotional with the lyrics. Absolutely beautiful 🌹. This is one of those songs that get better the more you listen to it, al least for me it is
Wow, I love Of Monsters and Men! I'm glad you liked their sound! Now that you have been introduced to them and begun to appreciate their voices I would recommend to listen I Of The Storm. Nanna's voice is absolutely beautiful in this one!

You're right, you can help smiling when listening to this.. Simple and delicate in a way.. Thank you Beth..
The first line is actually finnish as they are performing for a finnish radio station (Radio Nova). Oh and the line is just counting one, two, one two three four (Yksi, kaksi, yksi kaksi kolme neljä)
Oh god I love love LOVE this song, so glad you checked it.out.
Wow I never thought I'd see a omam song on this channel, this opens up a whole new possibility of things to react to. Btw I heard she uses a style of Icelandic singing that sorta "half pronounces" words (I think it's used in this song). Also they usually don't give explanations on what their songs mean cause they want it to be open to interpretation by the fans but this particular song they said it's about a women who lost her husband and is haunted by him. Also I really love Beirut too!
Love this song. It's so dark and upbeat at the same time. It scares me
Great song Beth. Unique vocals . A refreshing band!
Your reactions always make me happy!!! 😃 Yet again, I found myself chair-dancing along with you!!🪑🕺
Just discovered this band a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it.
Beth, I'm a long time lurker here and love your channel, thank you for doing what you do! OMAM are fabulous and have a wonderful backstory as well, the way their voices play off of each other is a work of art. Nanna's voice is a tiny bit husky but in this clip it is seriously strained, I don't recall the circumstances but if you want to hear her voice solo the love version of her newest single "Godzilla" is a treat. Exposed, vulnerable, powerful and sultry all at once. ❤️
I love this song, I first heard it on Rock Band and was like wow it’s powerful
OMAM - I've loved them since a friend introduced me to them about 2 years ago - and I love the quality of her voice and it works so well with his. The official videos on KZread are a good watch too
This might be one of my favorite videos ever I think. I originally clicked because I love the song… But now I think I have a vocal cord irregularity myself… and I’ve always struggled and been self conscious about the weakness and the raspyness of my voice, but you made me realize that’s it’s normal and some people just have different voices and that’s okay :)
FINALLY!!!!!!! Nanna's voice, you are correct. I would say it's raspy yet clean. Hated this song soooooooo much when it came out (It was a summer hit many years ago) until i started listening to the lyrics and fell in love with them.
off the same album is my very favorite OM&M song: Mountain Jam ...just an absolute catchy song!!
I saw them live in Melbourne Australia fantastic concert
Hi Beth. I recommend a group from Sweden Nordman "Vandraren" Thanks for a wonderful reaction video 🌹🎶
I love that they deliberately put the "Hey!" on different beats than one expects!
Something to be cognizant about for this song as it was performed as intended for how the song meant to be interpreted. Her breaking of the voice was on purpose. She was playing to the talking to herself about who is not there she lost
First time I heard her sing was in a high school music competition, you can find it here on youtube by searching for "Nanna Bryndís - Gleym Mér Ei" Song title is translated to english as "forget me not"
One of my favourite OMAM songs is Organs, which has just her singing. This song was my introduction to them though, and I was instantly in love with them. It was the music video though, slightly different sound.
I think nanna is losing her voice in this vid. Im always amazed singers keep performing when this is happening. I used to go see dave matthews at the end of the tours and his voice would be thrashed but if you saw all the shows he would usually find something for the last show of the weekend.
Beth, you are beautiful and soo talented. ❤
Lol Karine Polwart, Runrig, Of Monsters and Men, Dougie Maclean and Clannad are my absolute favorites. Ragnar’s voice is what caught my attention first because it’s so distinct and The first song I heard, was him singing by himself lol except on choruses and then I heard hers and I was like yes!
Try "Birthday" by the Sugarcubes in Icelandic. Bjork at her finest.
I know nothing about Iceland except for what I've seen in movies and heard from their more famous musicians like this group, Bjork, and Laufey. It seems like a beautiful land with cool (no pun intended) people.
Love Nanna
Nanna and Ragnar are two of the best. I love this band so much.
Love a lot OMAM, you should listen to Fleet Foxes, Robin Pecknold has such a beautiful voice, and the band love to make harmonies with his voice as well.
The drummer counted in Finnish. No idea why! 😄
Beth, being a fan of Scandanavian music you really should seek out the music of The Amazing. They released six albums between 2009 and 2018, but have sadly been inactive for the last five years. They sound like a cross between Nick Drake & Fleet Foxes maybe? They are from Sweden and although i cannot understand a word of their lyrics their music is so elegant and complex, they are one of my most cherished bands I listen to.
Being honest, I always confused this song with "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Incredible music both, this one is awesome.
Great song. I am also a fan of "Underneath My Bed" and "Lonely Weather" (which is very different sounding) by Of Monsters and Men.
Beirut are from New Mexico :-)
I too assumed they were a British band. The calls remind me of The Lumineers' Ho Hey
I think the drummer in the beginning was counting in Finnish "yks, kaks, yks, kaks, kol', nel'." (one, two, one, two, three, four)... could this have been recorded in Finland?

In the end texts I can see that it was recorded for the Finnish radio channel Nova
Accordion with brasses sounds a little polka maybe a little salsa and - you're right - something else too.
Ewert and the Two Dragons is a really similar folky pop band from Estonia.
Beth, I would love to see your reaction to, "the Scotsman song with lyrics" by Seamus Kennedy. It's a live recording. Just for your enjoyment, and ours. Enjoy LOL

OMAM are one of those bands that to me just do bot have a poor song in their whole discography. Each song seems so different to the next. They are one of those bands who when you listen to their music always seem to put you in a happy place. Thousand Eyes and Six Weeks are particular highlights but there are so so many standout songs for me.
Nanna just put out a solo song seven days ago. It's her first, I think, based on what she says in her own comments. It's worth taking a look at it. I think you'll like it. It's called Godzilla (I have no idea why - it certainly doesn't like what you might expect with that name). kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZqJq7CmmMechdo.html

I must say, the music video version sounds much better. Especially her voice in it.
Unfortunately, Nanna doesnt sing with this beautiful accent😢
The reason you thought they were English is probably because they speak (sing) English with a British accent rather than a North American accent.
Hey, Beth! Thank you for your Brazilian reaction series. Please react to Mayck e Lyan, they are the essential contemporary artists of Brazilian countryside music, called "sertanejo". They sing in traditional Brazilian duet stile, with the most characteristic musical instrument of this genre, the “viola caipira” (a ten strings guitar). Awesome voices and beautiful Brazilian countryside landscapes. Hope you like it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/maqcu6SikpepYZs.html
The drummer is talking Finnish in the beginning 🤣 It's not islandic.
Beth 😀 if you want to do a reaction to a bonkers vocalist. It's a cover of She's Gone but this Icelandic father of two is superb 👌 kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6xm2dWBaJjIlcY.html
Her voice sounds a bit weakened here, like she might have lost it a bit, been touring hard or could have been sick. It sounds stronger on the record obviously but not by much so all your comments still track. I'm just saying it doesn't always give out on her like this.
There’s better videos of them playing this song
The woman in the video has beautiful hands. Not the band, the woman speaking.
Then they got smart and they kicked out the trumpet player and became a middle of the pack pop group.

I have to be honest. I’ve never heard this version of the song and it’s a bit bubblier than the one that I own and love. With that said, considering the story that the song tells and the emotions that it brings me given my own personal loss, it was disconcerting watching you laugh and smile through this. I didn’t enjoy it at all.
I don't like this version
