Full points except it would be "kiitti" (thanks buddy) not "kiiti" (levitated forward at high velocity) if we're being pedantic. The subtle timing following the "t" consonant or closure makes all the difference. Hence it's underlined in written Finnish by the doubled lettering. There's also "taenks", but if you hear it, do know it wasn't like "kiitti" but ironic, so you did something wrong or funny first.

Tarja is a phenomenal vocalist. Her voice is unbelievable.

Could you just believe that Marko's voice "survived" a botched surgery to his vocal cords? The grit, however, is intentional: he has a really beautiful voice when he's on the lead! Check: "Kiss While your Lips are Still Red" "The Islander" or "Isäni Ääni/The Voice of my Father" all beautiful examples of clean vocals by Marko. And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2005 in the"End Of An Era" concert, in Helsinky, Finland, then with Tarja Turunen, the first female singer of the band, together with the bass player, Marco Hietala. This was also Tarja's last concert with the band, she was fired immediately after the show, with an open letter. Bitter-sweet memories.. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. As I saw you enjoyed this powerful performance of both Tarja and Marco, and I'm sure you noticed all the changes in the musical arrangement. The "responsible" is Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard guy. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. But i still believe he will make some music. Actually he is today singing in one concert place here in finland which closes down. It is legendary place and they stream it... I'm not sure if it will be on youtube so u can watch it.

And it's not just how they sang and played their parts, but how they made a coherent play of it. The following decade Finland saw an increase in music store purchases and music shcool applications for classical music. All by angsty teenagers as usual. Got to love it.

I actually saw your “Ghost Love Score” video first. I’m really bummed I missed this one, not many reactors start with Tarja, who is singing now! As an OG Tarja fan, Thank you very much! I love this performance so much, and Marko’s Voice is some how just as “angelic” as Tarja’s! Tarja’s ending notes are just insane! This band is awesome, and I look forward to many more videos of you reacting to them! Nightwish’s range is wide! Marco sings with The lead singer in many songs, but “The Islander” is a great song where he is the lead!

If you want to catch a Nightwish show, you better hurry. For their latest tour, they are only doing *3* North American shows: Toronto, 2 days in NYC, and 2 days in Los Angeles. Those tickets are going fast. Now, back to Phantom. A couple of things about this that makes this performance so special. 1. This wasn't a one-off performance. Nightwish covered Phantom of the Opera on their 2002 album "Century Child". This was the first album with Marko Hietala (the bassist and male vocalist) in the band. They also chose that song for a reason: here's a Beauty and Beast concept for that album. 2. When you look at Phantom of the Opera, there is a slight hint of BDSM to it. Not in a sexual or provocative way, but musically. Eric (The Phantom) keeps commanding Christine to sing, and sing higher and higher, which she does. it's very commanding. 3. We all have to remember that Eric is the bad guy in the musical. I mean, we all know that he kills someone in the theater! But instead of being operatic and clean with his vocals, and introspective and moody as he is in the musical, Marko makes him sound more sinister, which is why it works so well here. Even Andrew Lloyd Webber had stated at one point that the Nightwish arrangement was the best offstage performance of the song. 4. Marko does not have a falsetto range. He had a botched vocal surgery years ago that was to remove a polyp or something similar that didn't work out well. He worked hard to get his voice back, as he was also classically trained and had a couple of vocal coaches. But because of that surgery, he no longer has a falsetto range. Gabriel has already dropped Ann's welcome here, so I'd say that you should follow his list next, and have fun going down this journey!

Nightwish "Ghost Love Score" Wacken Open Air Festival 2013 is one performance you're going to love. With Floor Jansen, the 3rd and current female lead vocalist of Nightwish. The one you just heard was Tarja Turunen, the original female vocalist of Nightwish. Both great singers. Tarja's vocals are operatic, Floor is very versatile as "Ghost Love Score" proves. I second that. My top recommendation is Nightwish Ghost Love Score Live in Wacken 2013. Floor jumped into the tour as her predecessor Anette could not continue for health reasons in October 2012. There is a documentary about the situation "Please learn the Setlist in 48 hours". Later Floor became a permanent member. Fun fact: Floor loves this song and she added a little extra finish to it, which makes me like it more than Tarjas original version. I would kindly recommend not to interrupt the last chorus for best impact, which fans like to call a Floorgasm. ;-)

Reaction suggestion: JP Leppäluoto. He's a Finnish singer, and has a really unique voice, at least in my opinion. His first solo single "Kuoppa" shows his range quite well, and "Colder" by his first band Charon is really good too, and the best quality live video I've seen of him performing is a cover of a Finnish song called "Mombasa" (it's a simple song of six verses and no chorus, but I still love it).

Sadly this lineup is no longer there, with both Tarja an Marco no longer being in the band. They are still very good, and still totally worth seeing live. But the performance Marco and Tarja pull off in this song is quite magic. Ah yeah, the girls in the audience know what is coming 🙂I saw them live in this lineup many years ago, quite a nice experience.

Only scratching the surface of this band. So so much more to watch and listen to.

@@gidgouws SAME! I still think that after Tarja left that he should have become the lead singer instead of Annette. I would have continued listening to them if they had done that. I just really hate Annette's voice, it didn't mix well with the band's sound.

Tarja has changed a lot her voice, she still sings classic but since few years ago she’s been using chest voice, you can watch the cover House of Wax live or Love to Hate from her solo career, I really wanna watch a video analyzing her actual voice :)

Loved your reaction! Tarja is a professional classical singer from a College in Germany (which name I don't recall in the moment). She started singing metal when her friend Tuomas (founder of the band) reached her because he wanted her to be the singer of Nightwish.

To add a little bit of context on the crying girls in the audience: Marco joined the band after the end of their world tour in 2001. Until then, they did not have in the band a strong male vocalist, they either used guest singers, or Tuomas was singing. Let's just say he's a brilliant composer, some call him the metal Mozart, but a great singer... he is not. This show is after they released a new album, together with Marco and they started another 2 years world tour (2004-2005). The fans, we were beyond giddy to finally have a great male voice being part of the band and on top, to know that they will be singing the Phantom, with his great voice. Man, we were stoked! I am one of the lucky ones to witness this live in 2004, my first big concert. The memory will live with me forever.

Great idea to react to Nightwish songs... You will rich the "army" of Nightwish very soon... My suggestion is a bit many songs of the old Nightwish where Tarja is singing... Because all are reacting to Floor(of corse she is also amazing) but the real fans of Nightwish still love Tarja a lot... Bot of them are gorgeous... In same time also different... That's why is not ok to make a comparation between them... I apreciate both of them.... In different ways...

you'll probably will get tons of NW army tell you to react to just about anything w/ Floor Jansen singing for them.. So I won't bother.. except.. you gotta check out all the NW stuff w/ floor.. :) and Floors solo stuff, including her stuff from beste Zengers where Floor and Hank Port sing Phantom, and Hank did Disturbs Sound of Silence which is probably why a lot of the Army said to check out NW...I recommend starting off w/ NW's Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013.. The Army will direct you from there

Along with Tommy Karevik (Kamelot), Zak Stevens (Circle ii Circle), and Thomas Winkler/Angus McFife XIII (Gloryhammer). I'd suggest checking any of them out. For more Marko, check out his work with Delain and his own band, Tarot.

I love your reactions for several reasons, Jacob--your knowledge...your advice...your personality...and perhaps most importantly when contrasting you with other vocal coaches, your ability to feel AND show honest amazement WITHOUT looking down at those of us who have not had voice training. (Some others come across as so judgmental that it makes me cringe.) You, on the other hand, are soooo warmly RELATABLE while at the same time sharing your guidance. Thank you for........well........being you! Have got to send this to a "phriend" (another David Phelps' "phan") down just south of you in Columbia whom I had told about you and who can never get enough of "Phantom." I say that a lot of people went home with cold feet that night because he blew their socks off. I know--I was THERE!!! Just a bit of backstory: I played trumpet all throughout college, adoring the shininess, the brilliance of brass. And David's voice in the upper registers has that same quality, at least to me. Nightwish was founded in the late 90's by Tuomas (the keyboardist, who composes most of the music) and have had 3 amazing singers over the years. This lovely lady Tarja; being the 1st had a strictly operatic take until she went solo. the second singer Anette wasn't the best live, but her studio albums are AWESOME she was very pop-rock sounding. and the latest singer Floor... is a powerhouse. she can sing so many styles! (operatic, classical, gritty rock and even growl) They all added their own take to Nightwish. I hope you check them all out!

Nobody sings the phantom like Marko

I saw a story that Tarja was super sick the morning of that show. So much so that she could barely talk and then comes out and does this. I don't have the link to it anymore so I can't confirm the validity of it but either way she's phenomenal.

If you like Marko, you should check out Nightwish' version of "High Hopes". Back when Tarja was still with the band, she would often take a break in the middle of a show, and the guys would come out and do a cover song. (Lots of Kiss, Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd) And Marko would come out and do the singing for those songs. They have a great version of High Hopes by Pink Floyd. I think you might like it. It does a really good job of showing off more of Marko's singing talent.
