The yodeling is simply called a “falsete”, which literally translates to falsetto in Spanish. Singing falsetes in Huapangos was popularized by Miguel Aceves Mejía in his time. Arturo Vargas, the musician singing, has perfected his technique with the help of breath control, his natural high register, and proper technique.

Yes! hundred percent as a mariachi myself huapangos and boleros are we're this technique is used!
Arturo Vargas, the singer, currently holds the record in Mexico and possibly the world, being able to hold the Falsetto without a breathe for 56 seconds straight. TRULY AMAZING! His 32 years of professional experience sure comes through. VIVA MEXICO!
Try an evening in Veracruz in the town square in front of the cathedral. The Mariachi come around and play for your table for a few pesos. That's then followed up by El Rancho del Norte bands going bar to bar. You will experience pure joy! I worked in Mexico for 5 years. People tell me they went to Mexico on holiday. Cancun and Acapulco... No. You went to an American interpretation of Mexico! Try Veracruz, Poza Rica, Villahermosa. Then you will experience the true Mexico. It's an incredible country!

If you ever get a chance to see them live I highly recommend it. Ever single mariachi can sing and their concert consist of each one of them taking turns singing songs they are true showmen hence the consistentsmiles.. Plus they drink a ton before the concert and are a blast to chill with. These guys are simply the best mariachi group on the world.
I have seen them in person several times in concert in Phoenix and San Diego, they are world-class musicians. It was surprising to me the power that this group has. I heard them perform un-amped in a large hotel ballroom, and it was like being in a box full of opera singers running at full blast! I love classic Mariachi music with the intricate melodies, harmonies and lyrics that tell compelling stories. Thanks so much Beth!

Mexico and Ireland have a great history together, from the migrants who moved to Mexico to the St. Patrick's Brigade which helped Mexico out during the Mexican-American War. Who maybe you have an ancestor that dates back to this and that's why you like Mariachi so much. Also, I just assumed you're Irish, but if I'm wrong you have the right to be mad lol.

@@toolrocks10 You beat me to the punch. Many Irish immigrants fought for the Americans but were shunned because of their religion and were treated unfairly which is why many of them jumped sides to the Mexican army. Mexico offered them citizenship and the opportunity to practice their faith for they both were from Catholic cultures. Hence the name the battalion was given “Los San Patricios” (or Saint Patrick’s Battalion) Love this story, also a very cool fact is that former Mexican President Alvaro Obregon is a descendant of an Irish family. They changed their surname from “O’Brien” to “Obregon” to make it “more Mexican” Roughly paraphrasing an article I read but this is definitely fact.

My violoncello teacher plays in that orchestra, and that orchestra is the OFEQ (Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de Querétaro). Cool to find it in your channel. ((:
Miguel Aceves Mejia popularized the style. I wish today’s recording technology was around in his time.
It’s the way the song is written. Grew up in South Texas with this stuff. I have a special place in my heart for the way Mexican men sing.
Amazingly similar to the Alpine singing in Switzerland and Germany. Very nice. Thank you for sharing!

The “yodeling” sound you mentioned is called a Falsete in Mexico which translates to Falsetto. It’s commonly used in a lot of Mexican music folklore. This song is probably the most famous example of this tradition. I would also recommend “La Malgueña” with Aida Cuevas for this type of music

As mentioned before, the "falsete" is common in mariachi music, look for Miguel Aceves Mejía and specially a song called "Malagueña Salerosa" or just "La Malagueña". The Mariachi Vargas has its own version too, enjoy!

His name is Arturo Vargas and i had the pleasure of hearing him in Guadalajara. So good. Highly recommend seeing Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan
This music style we know in México as "Huapango" or "Son Huasteco" it's a tipical music of a específic región of our country.
greetings from Mexico. Could you react to a song titled "la malagueña"? This version is performed by mariachi vargas de tecalitlan in the program "noche de boleros y son". please, I am very sure that you are going to love it very much.
David Zaizar and Miguel Acevez Mejia were the kings of falsetto, or "falsete" in Mexico, and it's only one style of mariachi singing, the hardest one to sing.
Beth, I really enjoy your reaction videos to Spanish music. I dont know much about music, but i do enjoy it, and it seems like you do as well. Keep up the great work.
Here are the lyrics for your enjoyment and a better appreciation of the song: *The Shepherd* The shepherd goes with his flock At the breaking of dawn Going down the trail From the mountains to the meadow He goes musicalizing his complaints With his reed flute Followed by his sheep As if it was a spell Chorus: The flute Of the shepherd Ay, ay, ay Sings like this The shepherd goes back again As the sun is setting down He's going up the hill To keep his flock With his flute he's calling One by one his sheep And he communicates them His joys and his sorrows Chorus: The flute Of the shepherd Ay, ay, ay Sings like this
As some said before that yodeling is called “falsete”, made on the same vocal that is said; it is used on “huapangos” from mexican music.
Mariachi Vargas still the best mariachi in the world! I was privileged enough to meet and interview their director years ago. Such a nice guy.

Your reaction was even more fun to watch than the video. I’ve seen this performance before, and it is classic!
Un himno , espectacularmente Interpretado.
Beth, as you were wandering about this type of yodeling was related to certain singers. A short explanation. This type of mexican songs are originally related to an specific region in México: The Huastecas. Being a huapango on their own, these huapangos huastecos included that typical expression of using the flutes and the specially with their yodeling voices. Our typical country music is colored depending on their original regions. The beauty of this song and this fine interpretation herein is just what a fine Maricchi gets. And moreover the rich enhansement by this fine Orchestra. I am glad you enjoyed it.
The whole concert was phenomenal? The Best at this Day and age? I love them .
THE WARNING ARE THREE SISTERS FROM MONTERREY, MEXICO 🇲🇽, THEY ARE A ROCK BAND OF 21, 19 AND 16 YEARS OLD.
I'm praying for my typical music, greetings from Tlaxcala
Your comment, Beth, at the end was how I have come to feel about your channel. It has openned me up to so many musical and vocal forms that I would previously never have listened to. Oh, hey! Guess what. I can yodel a little. I told my friends, Larry and his wife Carrie, that I could yodel so Larry said, "Go ahead". And so I did and got a fist bump. Oh, guess what else. I just got my DNA results back and I am 59% Scottish. Ain't that great?
Beth I love You ❤️ from Pachuca Hidalgo México 🇲🇽❤️🌹🌹
This is cool stuff. Love it.
As someone who played mariachi in high school and college, I can say that the falsetto is used throughout any different sub genre of mariachi music. I had the opportunity of seeing Arturo Vargas sing this song twice and throughout the years that he sings this song the more control he gains in his ability to hold this high range notes. He also been known to go even higher and holding those long note even longer especially the "el flatin" and "del pastor" parts in the finale.
Amazing!!! So glad that you’re reacting to this! I’ve been hoping you would since I started watching your channel! (You do such a great job of covering so many genres.) Amazing!

In this song, I believe the falsetto represents the flute the herder plays to his herd to call them in. Think of the pied piper. In this song, the falsetto really is a part of the song, not just a method of singing it. The song is basically about a herder that has only sheep as companions. He tells them his joys and sorrows

Hi Beth. You mentioned rancheros and the Europeans that call to their animals. This song, pastor, translates to Shephard. He's singing of a Shephard bringing his flock down from the mountain to the prairie with his little flute (hence the flute solos). When it begins to get dark he must return and again calls to his flock to follow, with his little flute. To my understanding it's written to be sung in this fashion.
Love you for having this on your channel. He's a great example of how to take mariachi to the next level! I would love to hear you do a cover of a song you feel comfortable with. Thank you for giving my culture such a great platform by which to inspire others. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yodeling is performed or sang in this genre of Mexican music that is called HUAPANGOS. The region of Mexico called HUASTECA. There are, I believe five States of Mexico; Veracruz Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi, and two more, that I do not remember now. The famous singer MIGUEL ACEVES MEJIA came from that region of Mexico, and thanks to him, this gorgeous genre is noe known all over the world.

Hello Beth love your reviews as was stated the Huapango is not considered ranchera music it is it's own genre and sadly disappearing it is from the huasteca region of Mexico very fertile very green and it is centered around three different States of the country. I would offer that you review la cigarra (cicaida) beautiful song with long beautiful falsettos one the best modern interpretations is by Natalia Jimenez and Lila Downs the costumes are amazing the energy is amazing truly a spectacular. Natalia Jiménez is from Spain but found fame in Mexico she was the lead singer in a very successful pop band La Quinta Estación and then went on to a solo career singing rancheras that highlighted her vocal range and furthered her popularity she has adopted Mexico as her home as have many others from latin America . MEXICO is the music mecca for latin/Spanish singers . Natalia Jiménez pays tribute to Mexico and show cases some of Juan Gabriel songs (she did a duet with Juan Gabriel and was one of her biggest supporters and was agood friend to her) in her album Mexico de mi Corazón .. Translated to Mexico of my Heart meaning Mexico is imbedded in her heart her love for Mexico (we would say to a loved one MI Corazon .. My Heart ) Beth i actually would ask that you explore the whole album the collaborations are magnificent Music from all regions of Mexico and truly amazing. I saw that she also performed some of her songs from her album for Disney and a Disney movie centered around the day of the dead. Please review La Cigarra beautiful Huapango with Natalia Jimenez and Lila Downs
