BIG bummer the day I heard him being referred to in post mortem discussion. He was so talented, such a character, apparently a nice guy. And let's not forget: he is the one, they say, who came up with the name for the band-----Brian Jones style, at a moment's notice!

Two things: (2) I discovered and fell for this band during COVID and have watched their videos probably hundreds of times in the last three years. Lots of talent for a Georgia cover band. (2) Most if not all of their pre-2020 videos are in public venues -- bars, festivals, etc. -- but their live performances measure up to this studio-quality song.

Speaking of runs, just wait for it. Chase is vocally just warming up. She gets with the program near the end. And she has a great range. And her voice is SO warm and tender. Actually, they all record individually but film together. Tim is able to balance them because of that. He has commented that he often has to reduce the volume on his daughter Sammie because her high pitched voice tends to sound louder than it really is. So he does do mixing but there is no auto tune here. If you watch their early live videos you will see they all have their own mic and were again recorded on their own tracks so Tim was able to do some mixing for the videos, which is why they generally sound as good as the stuff done in Tim's basement. Also, the group doesn't rehearse nearly as much as you might think. For the live performances they usually had one rehearsal at the beginning of summer and then did a few shows over the summer break recording one of them. Thanks for the review. This group doesn't get nearly enough attention.

Very enlightening. I think the reason F&F are happening now is the way Tim set up the sound on those live shows at the taco joint so he was able to mix everything, as you say. People know that no band playing live that they've heard sounds that good, so it was really impressive.

Beth, You are going to enjoy this so very much. This group's harmonies are tight and gentle. Their skill sets are off of the charts. The young lady singing, Chase saves some of the best for the end. Tim (black tee-shirt) has been in the music game for some time. Darwin has a rich low bass voice. Maggie Adams could sing a telephone book and make it sound good. Lastly Sammie adds her special twist. I think Todd would approve of this cover.

I just love this group and can hardly wait each month or so for the next video to come out. They are excellent singers and musicians and Todd Rundgren has heard them do his songs and had nothing but praise for them. They do such a large range of styles and each of the three girls as well as Tim and Darwin get their chance to shine as lead vocalist. They started out recording their live performances about 10 years ago when there was no drummer and only one lead guitarist as well as only having two female singers. The make up of the band changed slightly over the years and then with all the girls gone off to college they stopped performing for a while. And then about 2 or 3 years ago all the members got back together and started recording in the studio. They haven't performed live in about 5 years but are planning a live performance for the end of the year. I'm so planning on being there. Hope to see you do more reactions to Foxes and Fossils, Beth. Love your channel.

Hi Beth, great review of F&F. I happened upon them in February 2018, when I was on KZread searching for a version of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes to rehearse to in the car. (I asked my husband and a friend to perform it for a festival a year away and my husband took the vocal part I usually sing, so I needed to practice it like it was a new song). KZread suggested Foxes and Fossils, and I was blown away by their performance. Later, I found out it was there VERY first live show, when Maggie and Sammie were 15! Fell down the rabbit hole and became a huge fan, happily attending both reunion shows in Atlanta next week and am pretty sure live is going to be just as phenomenal as all the live recorded videos, probably better. However, I am sad that Scott King will not be there to bask in the adoration he well deserves along with everyone else. You recommended checking out their channel, so it appears you've seen all those live shows. Tim's mixing from live audio rivals the best in the business, and there's never been an autotune assisted track in that bunch. If you're looking for recommendations of where to start after viewing Beth's review, I encourage you to check out Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Other classics that do the originals justice include Seven Bridges Road, Amie, Landslide, Royals, Here and Now, Barton Hollow, The Things We Do For Love, and the Night Before. To be honest, there is not a dud on their KZread channel. All their albums are currently in my car, with the Christmas CD in heavy rotation at the moment. (I also like their covers of some covers, like Senses Working Overtime) You think of a song with a strong harmony, and the odds are good they've done it. If you decide that this is a band you must see, there are some tickets left to see them in Atlanta.

If something sounds off, they tweak and retry. Yes, each part recorded separately and mixed, plus one take of the bunch of them singing together - actually singing, not lip-syncing - but that take's audio isn't used. This song, in my opinion, is the absolute epitome of unadultured vocal collaboration. F&F has tons of great content, but this song is a jewel.

I like your description about chord construction and how it shapes the vocal harmonies. Todd utilizes so many colorizations with Min3, Sus4, Maj7, Dom7, and F&F always meet the challenge, as with so many vocal heavy selections and arrangements they cover.

Thanks Beth, I hope you do more F&F. Tim started recording these mostly for family, 10 years ago. Then Sweet Judie Blue eyes took off on KZread. I think you will particularly like their Mama & Papa covers & CSN&Y covers.

Nice suggestion Tom and another excellent review, Beth! I always enjoy BOTH of your channels. Rundgren hit it out of the park with this one. A great song, covered by many, and F&F absolutely do it justice. I’ve found another group to add to my playlist!

These guys are great and Im subscribed to them . Go check out the rest of their recordings . The girls are fantastic . Maggie has a superb voice . They have really been around since 2010 when the girls were in high school . They were great then when they were playing in the parking lots of a taco eatery .

Chase Truran has her own KZread channel, sings a lot of old standards and jazz outside of F&F. I found these guys years ago and always wondered why Tim Purcell did not make it in Nashville as an artist or producer because he obviously has the chops and skills. I have loved watching Maggie and Sammie mature over time.

If you listen to The Uncovered Music of Tim Purcell interview- news section on the website, he tells about making the decision to give up on being a Nashville songwriter and chose being a stay at home dad for his girls and local musician nights and weekends.

There was a lot of great music in the 70s and 80s that you won't hear performed except by 'cover' bands. Some of the better ones I follow are Lake Street Dive who do jazzy covers of R&B and Leonid & Friends who cover Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire. Too many of the bands from my youth have key members that have passed on, so I'm glad that good musicians are keeping their songs alive.
