My girlfriend at the time loved this band and wanted to go see them when they played at the Agora Ballroom in West Hartford CT back in 1983. Being a Metal Head myself I couldn't stand them at the time but hey, the things we'll do for love, right? It's a very intimate venue so we were bellied up to the stage as usual and I was kind of ready for the worse as Boy George made his way on stage and stepped up right in front of us, barefoot and all. Within a few bars of the first song I couldn't help but feel the charisma of this big weird dude in makeup named Boy George just killing it, the guy can sing, and the band was on point, mind blown!!! It was such a great show and opened my eyes to a lot of great bands at the time that I would have never noticed had I not stepped out of my comfort zone for my girl.

Culture Club was among my favorite bands for a while back then. This was probably their signature song, and I think pretty much the only one that one usually hear today, but they had quite a number of good songs.

I find that his voice is like fine wine......it aged well and got richer! I saw an interview with him where he said that listening to himslef back in those days (80's / 90's) he thinks he sounds too nasal. I loved his voice back then and still do. But I find he has such more of a richer tone now. Listen to his song The King of Everything, his voice melts me! Also when he sings his classic songs like Karma Chameleon these days he puts a different spin on them and his voice his magic!

I will say, you are definitely my favorite voice expert doing these reviews eactions. You are full of knowledge, always have a smile, never unnecessarily critical. You still are able to point out areas where an artist performance may fluctuate or not be a good vocal choice, but you still seem to deliver that in just an academic way. I am not really pointing that out here as much as over time. Anyway, thank you for the great memories with this song. Boy George was a breath of fresh air when he arrived on the scene. Always enjoyed his performances. Thank you for what you do! Cheers from Colorado, USA!

The two tracks to listen to on the Colour By Numbers album that show off his voice are Miss Me Blind and Victims. Victims is a damned fine vocal performance and a damn well written song and beautifully performed by George and Helen Terry. Beyond any doubt of mine, the best track on the album. And not only is his voice smooth but it has soul as well on that song. Well worth listening to the album version of Victims, its a bloody great track.

As I was a DJ and working with sound equipment long ago ( over 25 years), it is correct that the microphone is not plugged in. ( where is the amp?) ( where is the sound eq, that's meant to be on stage, when performers perform?) Also, notice how Roy Hay plays his guitar. Even though George does have a natural voice for singing. Which is why, back on those days, singers actually used their voice. No software/ hardware manipution, as it is now. The sound controller ( eq, frequency, tone, etc) can alter the singers voice, or Vox as it is today.) He's singing naturally, which is why George is a natural singer. He did have some training for his voice, too, back in the early 80s, as most singers do. Still for 1983, it's a great, lovely performance. Karma is a great song. George is an excellent performer The main reason is that he is making his audience happy.

Top of the Pops back in the day were known for rarely allowing live performances by bands - something to do with the musicians union or something along those lines, because when you did get live performances, the BBC would use their musicians in addition to those of the band. As an aside, could you PLEASE review 'The Irrepressibles - The Mirror Mirror Spectacle at The Queen Elizabeth Hall' 2010 video. Honestly, I think you'll love it as it's not only a great all-round performance, but the video itself is hypnotic (to me, at least). Many thanks.

I can't think ot a more underated singer than Boy George. That natural, subtle vibrato... bird-like clarity without any effort to stretch it to sound more dramatic or showy. He's not projecting, he's not oversinging, he's not showing off; it's authentic unemoted emotional expression. You feel it deeply.

Such a great song and melody, one that invites you to join in. If there is one criticism that I would level at today's music other than over-processing and over-production is that there is a distinct lack of melody that you can participate in for the sheer enjoyment of the melody. Today melody functions mostly as a support structure, like the framing of a building, that supports the vocal narrative that tells you what the song is about rather than the symbiotic call-and-response that is the hallmark of many of the great songs of the past, for example, the Animals', "House of the Rising Sun".

I had to laugh when I saw the NFL jerseys the band were wearing. The guitarist and drummer were in jerseys of 2 teams that were bitter rivals, and the bassist was wearing a jersey that was a cross-town rival of the drummer's. So the drummer's team was disliked by both the guitarist's and bassist's teams. Which, if you knew anything about the band, pretty much tracked. 😂

Hi Dear Beth, have you ever heard of a Brazilian group called "Secos e Molhados"? They're from the '70s and played a kind of Progressive Rock. I draw attention to the vocalist, Nei Matogrosso, who today, over 70 years old, still performs on tours and sings a lot. Below is a link to a track from the 1973 LP, a rarity. I hope you enjoy it.
