    I won't call it exactly improvement, he always was even way before joining Kamelot a fantastic singer, just check his voice in Seventh Wonder (his first band) or Ayreon project (in both cases both in studio and live), many of Kamelot songs are not in that range of dynamic or difficulty of those songs, Kamelot to this day actually did not use Tommy's voice to its full potential, specially in his first album, after that the other two album were better in using his voice but nowhere near what could have been. edit for spelling

    Hi Beth, I don’t know if you’ll even see this, but just wanted to say that I love your videos! You are so positive and your interpretations and breakdowns are always so fun to watch. Tommy Karevik is hands down my favorite singer in any genre. He is incredibly talented and though he is very good in Kamelot, he is outstanding in his original (and still also current) band “Seventh Wonder” as their songs use more of his range and vocal flexibility. He’s also a wonderful human being and has been a firefighter in Sweden until he moved to Canada to be with his wife Kobra. If you’re ever looking for more of Tommy’s vocals I highly recommend checking out Seventh Wonder! Either way, all the best to you and thank you for all of the great videos and reactions!

    Yea. It's true that Tommy does get kinda overshadowed by Roy; and that's speaking from someone who's favorite singer has been Roy Khan for years. I personally like Roy more because of his versatility in the songs themselves (Each album is quite a bit different than the last) and his unique voice. With that being said, I do think that Tommy has done an amazing job thus-far, a nice change to Kamelot, and by all rights just as talented. Highly recommend anyone new to Kamelot to dive into all their albums and enjoy the different experiences. It's all good; like Nightwish XD

    I wonder why you are using the names for them that you are using? Charlotte Wessels is not known as Johanna even if that is actually one of her first names. Also, Tommy Karevik's name is not Paige, it's either Karevik(as he's known) or "Karevik Paige" as his civilian name goes. Paige is his wife('s middle name, not even her family name). It's just as confusing, as if I told you that Richard Tiffany was good in "Pretty Woman" - yes, technically Tiffany is part of his family name, but everyone knows him as Richard Gere... I know it might sound harsh towards you, but it is a lot more confusing for us... we don't need to know them by their private names that they don't use professionally, it's none of our beeswax... wanna dox them too? Otherwise, keep up the good work, I love your content.

    Although Charlotte's first name is actually Johanna, referring to her at the start 0:21 as Johanna is like going up to Elton John and saying "Oi Reg". Sadly I think I was the only person (judging from other comments) who picked up on this. I think I have seen a video of her stating that she finds it weird when people call her Johanna as she is so used to people using her stage name.

    I'm going to push back a bit on the "female fronted metal" thing. I think it is a bit of it's own subgenre, and why shouldn't it be? Men and women have different sounding voices (see the video above for two wonderful examples), and what are those voices but the singers instrument, right? Saying a band is "female fronted" is just a short-form, like you might say "three piece", "chamber quartet" or "choir", because it gives you some relevant information about the band and the way they are going to sound. This can certainly make a difference to the listener, such as myself, because I prefer the sound of the female voice. There are a lot male vocalists I absolutely adore (like Tommy here), but all other things being equal, if you asked me to choose between a male and female vocalist the latter is going to get my vote at least 9 times out of 10. So if you want to sell me on a band I've never heard, saying "female fronted" is a sure way to get my attention. End of the day, like anything else, "female fronted metal band" is just a collection of words. It'd be awful if some talented young women out there let themselves be shamed into thinking that somehow diminishes them or their talent in any way. I suggest taking ownership of it instead.

    The point is that "male fronted" shouldn't be seen as the default. If you're going to say a band is "female fronted", you should be calling the alternative "male fronted". Plus female fronted bands and their singers voices vary so much, it doesn't make sense to use male or female fronted as the defining characteristic. We don't seem to do this in other genres, so why do it for metal?

    @@fountainPoison Why shouldn't male fronted be seen as the default when those bands are the vast majority? Until that changes, what's the inherent harm? I think there's even an argument to be made that "female fronted" as a term is a net benefit as it does call special attention to those bands. In the long run, perhaps that will inspire more women to get into making metal music because the women who are already doing it aren't hidden among the vast ocean of male fronted bands? Being the minority, atypical or even abnormal is not synonymous with bad. It's not inherently a negative, they all just mean "not the majority". Someone has to _make_ it negative, has to consciously make that determination. I'm saying don't do that. Let the changes happen organically. Think about the medical profession. You hardly ever hear "female doctor" anymore because it's just not unusual (and a doctors sex never was relevant to what they do). Women even outnumber men in many specialties. But doesn't the sex of their OB-GYN matter to a lot of women? In that case, wouldn't it be appropriate to say when recommending a certain doctor to someone that they are "a male OB-GYN"? People need to stop going out of their way to take offence to things.

    @@iDEATH you're really over complicating this. Is it that big of a deal to you to keep using "female-fronted" metal band? A number of women singers in metal have expressed they don't like it and explained why. Is it so hard to respect that? It's not saying to never mention or point out that the singer in the band is a woman but a band being labeled as "metal but female-fronted" is othering rather than inclusive. A lot of times these bands with women vocalists don't get to be in the same category as other bands for no other reason than having a woman vocalist despite being otherwise identical.

  • @fountainPoison

    @@iDEATH also no one says "so-and-so is a male ob-gyn". Like, that's not part of their title. People just say "so-and-so is an ob-gyn".

  • @iDEATH

    @iDEATH

    @@fountainPoison No, it's not othering. Taking it that way is a conscious choice. Offence is always taken, never given. Also, as I think I was clear on in the OP, men and women singers are not "otherwise identical". Their voices, their instruments, are undeniably different. You wouldn't ask for a chello when you wanted a violin. Who doesn't put these bands in the same category? I don't even understand that. The standards are the standards, full stop. End of the day, nothing matters save for the talent and skill of the instrumentalists and vocalists. If they can't cut it, if they aren't good, then who cares about them at all? It doesn't matter what they've got between their legs, really, it only matters how they sound.
