I keep getting comments that it's his accent creating the vowel changes or skipping over certain consonants. His accent probably does play a part in this (I honestly didn't think about it) but you can have an accent and sing with any vowel choices you want. A lot of American pop & theater singers sing like this as well if you listen for it!

The vowel changes and consonant skipping was something my choir teacher in high school made a big deal to teach us about. Not to be THAT guy but, I kNeW iT bEfOrE yOu SaId It 🤓. Learning that though was one of the things that helped me a lot with improving. 😊

I'm from Dublin and many people here tend to close their vowels. For example the word Dublin. We go low on the Du....so like Duh-blin. While north Americans and English people tend to day dab-lin.....hope that makes sense.

As a vocal teacher I can confirm that every trained vocalist has to modify their vowels to produce a certain tone or effect. Tristan isn't shitting out of his mouth, he's absolutely right. Accent is not a factor when you're a professional singer. There are so many punk rock singers for example from the UK who sound American when they sing in a nasal tone. Yes, maybe he's Irish so he has an accent when he speaks, but to reach those notes with a dark sound you HAVE to manipulate your throat and your tongue such that you pronounce your vowels with such a sound.

Just for everyone who hasn’t done voice lessons and are saying that his accent is the reason for the difference in vowels, you might be right with some of the phrasing but more then likely he is doing on purpose to change the tone of the song, it’s a technique that every good singer uses to create different sounds or tones, if you change the vowel slightly it can also make the transitions between words better and make it easier to sing. And the reason that Tristan is pointing it out isn’t to pick, it’s to show people how this vowel technique can be applied to your own music. Hoizer is a very in control of his instrument, it’s foolish to think he’s not purposefully changing his vowels.

Exactly right. Hozier uses the same techniques uses by most trained singers. He'd have learned this with Anúna the Celtic band of singer he uses to be a member of. Not every Thing is down to accents and as an Irish person Hozier barely had an accent, the Bray accent for the main is pretty soft. It's quite refined.

Thank you for stating it! A sane voice in a chorus of chalk on a board! Although the way he pronounces God in his chorus clearly points him out geographically to my ear. So many people are on this vocal coach for "judging" which is ridiculous! First off, he supposed to be analyzing technique; done! Secondly, this coach obviously adores Hozier's voice. Who's judging? What gives with all the back lash at the poor guy? I personally love the way Hozier sings and didn't take any offence to the analysis. Hmmm.

yes, exactly! i’ve always been taught to keep the space in the back of my throat open and to do that you have to change vowels because some stretch if that makes sense. it’s a technique that makes your voice sound bigger and clearer and it’s prominent in performance and musical theatre. thank you for explaining

That's why I hated singing popular songs in choir, the conductor would always make you pronounce the words properly no matter what, so they could be heard all the way in the back of the hall. It's so uncomfortable to do that though and so overexaggered

It is different in a choir though, if everyone clips their words and doesn't pronounce the start and end of words on time intentionally, it can sound really messy really fast. That includes pronouncing vowels slightly differently, because singing clearly sounds different to speaking, especially with accents. Multiple voices all being slightly clipped and slightly offtime makes the lyrics hard to hear. A soloist can get away with this because there's no other voice to mix them up with. If you listen to Broadway singers, they pronounce EVERYTHING really clearly, even the company, and only distort intentionally, like Hozier. Tristan said he can get away with it because he has a perfectly clear note underneath. A choir basically never does that, so any distortion or fluffy enunciation just ends up sounding messy.

If you knew anything about vocal techniques, you'd understand it's not just because he's Irish. You want fuller sounds on harsher sounding vowels. You're often taught to sing like you're British, hence why most British singers you can't hear the accent. It just sounds more soothing and unforced. Sing Lieeeef (kind of smiling with singing) vs. Laiiiife (dropping your jaw, to where it sounds like a mix of letters with a touch of an I)
