Jiu is considered a lead vocalist, but her range is smaller than yoohyeon's and siyeon's. Her voice is softer and has this sweet tone to it. Her technique is pretty decent tho, she just lacks power and range. Also please keep in mind this video is from 2017, all of them had improved a lot since then. If you want to take a better look at Jiu's vocals, you should probably take a look at her solo cover for Honesty. Her duet cover with Handong for Remember Me. And if you want live performances, maybe their last appearence on Immortal Songs 2.

You're right. Her range and power might be weaker than Yoohyeon, which is Lead Vocal as same, but she is very stable and basically has soft beautiful voice. It's hard to see that Jiu misses the note.

15:40 I dont think she is trying to harmonize with Yoohyeon. It is actually an adlib which is a part of the song. She is actually oversinging her but she wont have been able to reach those notes if she dont use her full voice. I would say that in the editing of the video they should have lowered the volume on that part for siyeon to match the song but I guess they want to emphasize siyeon's vocals that they let it be.

Yeah Yoohyeon kills the spider which then places a curse on the girls and essentially kicks off the Nightmare arc.

The story in Fly High is based on the original native american legend of the Dreamcatcher! From what I've read, Dreamcatchers are supposed to be a gift from the Spider Lady to the children, so they can have good dreams. When JiU traps the spider and Yoohyeon kills it, the Spider Lady appears and curses all of them, turning them into nightmares one by one. It's important to understand that this doesn't make the Spider Lady evil! Yoohyeon is the one who kills the spider. They all just have to deal with the consequences later on the story.

JiU is generally considered a Lead Vocal. I'm not sure if that is official but most guides list her as a Lead Vocal, Lead Dancer and Visual. Oh and She is the Fake Maknae Too!😁 This of Course is an Earlier Dreamcatcher Video and Their Vocals have Improved even more since the time this video was made.

JiU is lead Vocal, but they tend to only say "vocalist" when introducing them. The "Main" title is really the only one that "counts" during introductions. JiU is definitely main vocal material at some times, but her range is definitely no where near the same as Yoohyeon's or Siyeon's when it comes to belting and high notes.

I think JiU’s lines were supposed to be like that- quiet and in the back. It’s not cause of confidence. If you listen to the song, that part is just sang behind the main voices on chorus.

JIU is Queen of bridge ...her voice color sounds very different and contrast with the other members

Same here. It’s really hard to be honest because fans just won’t hear negative things about their idols. But we can stan them while at the same time recognizing they’re not the best at everything. But you have a way of talking where you are honest but at the same time not negative. That’s pretty rare!

for jiu's parts, the lines were supposed to sound like that, just the the same how it is in the official audio. just kinda like adlibs and shouldn't be emphasize too much, that's why her voice wasn't full. yes, she has a softer tone and her voice isn't as powerful as the others but she's definitely not a weak vocalist. eventho she doesn't belt notes often, she can definitely do it. she's a lead vocalist after all. in lots of her live singing covers, she has belted quite often. she just hasn't been given the chance to do so with their tracks since siyeon often takes charge of it. and for the last part, siyeon and yoohyeon weren't trying to harmonize. siyeon was doing the adlibs so obviously they didn't sound to be in harmony. but thanks for the honest reaction 👍

the butterflies signify innocence... so when she burned the spider the innocence was "burned" away.

Oh and yes, JiU, while not a bad singer, it's like her focus is more on the breathy/soft type of singing, so she might not be the best when more volume is involved. She used to try a bit harder for power vocals on their Minx days, but now it's like she just settled on the soft side of her voice (wich is actually really good tbh). She usually shines the most on softer songs or on the more "sexy" sounding songs (like Wonderland). And Siyeon is the main vocal and Yoohyeon the lead vocal (wich would be #1 vocal for main and #2 for lead in kpop) SuA has a lot of power on her voice, but she doesn't have the best technique. (she still manages tho)

Thanks for your reactions! This is what I’ve gathered from listening to all their songs over and over: JiU: Soft or sweet sounding vocals, usually used in the bridges and in ballads. Occasionally gets belty notes (Red Sun, Chase Me) but her voice is quite sharp(?). She’s mentioned that she’s adjusted her tone to better fit Dreamcatcher’s songs because the instrumentals are stronger than your average pop song so you may hear some differences between her current singing style and the older Minx videos should you react to those SuA: Great lower and mid range and hasn’t really used much of her upper range until this year but she’s improved tons, they usually use her for the last chorus for added impact but she can handle just about anything imo Siyeon: very belty, power vocal, usually used exclusively for her upper range especially since it works well with their style of music but in covers she has shown that she’s very versatile and can do more than just belts (check out her performances for V1!) Handong: I love her voice a lot it’s actually my favorite amongst all the members because she’s really good at expressing emotions with her voice. Husky lower range and very pretty delicate upper range that DC often make use of in their ballads. More than capable of using a stronger voice but it’s not often you hear it. She’s classically trained. It’s actually not often you hear her voice in their songs in general unless you’re paying attention since she gets shorter sections. I recommend her performance from the survival show she was on to hear more of her vocals since she took the role of main vocal for that performance “Ambush from all sides 2 team A” Yoohyeon: Generally strong and clear and used alongside Siyeon in the chorus. Considered to be a lead vocal alongside JiU but those positions are from Minx and I think she’s a lot more consistent than JiU (?). Tons of great covers from her most notably “Secret Love Song” Dami: Her voice outside of her rapping is quite surprising since she’s also usually used as a softer vocal with her upper range but given her natural speaking tone I think her lower/mid range is probably quite good. Has also improved considerably since their debut in singing (Jazz Bar). Imo still stronger as a rapper Gahyeon: New to rapping but I think the raps she’s been given make good use of her tone. Actually a good vocalist and has improved considerably but I feel like in the beginning you could tell she had less experience than the others (?) I think she’s probably most consistent in her mid range and is good at delivering the occasional belt when she’s given the opportunity (In the Frozen). Her voice is also great for their sweeter songs (Which a Star)

You definetly need to check out "You and I's" dingo live version! Its really good! 😍 (They are playful there so you can also get to know dreamcatchers crackhead side)

I think the "can't live without you" line wasn't meant to be emphasized much since it's adlibbed and distorted in the original song, so maybe Jiu was trying to make it sound like that? She actually ranks 3rd in vocals from lists I've seen although Sua is catching up to her. Butterflies are symbols of the soul in Korea and China so when Yoohyeon burned the spider, that cruel act destroyed the girls souls leaving them trapped on earth and unable to ascend to heaven to wait for their next life. The guardian spirit of spiderkind (figure who covers Gahyeon's eyes) curses them to an eterniity of bringing nightmares into people's dreams. Jiu rushes to shut the gate trapping them in the school. She still retains enough of her humanity to want tp protect the world from them. There's a lot more in the video, but that's the brief version. Shamanistic cultures like Korea regard spiders as guardian creatures who are good, so needlessly killing one is very bad.

Jiu is my ultimate bias out of all Kpop groups. She can sing, rap, dance, produce, act, and lead the best group with an amazing army of InSomnias behind her. Truly underrated and underappreciated. It's okay, I love her for all that she is.

You should check out their Dingo vocal live of You and I, I feel like it showcases their vocals a lot better. Jiu’s vocals seem to be lighter than the other girls but personally her voice is one of my favs in dc

poor jiu :D, jiu and sua probably on the same level behind siyeon and yoohyeon. if you haven't noticed, jiu gets almost all the bridge parts. tough to evaluate handong because she doesn't get many lines. she does have her special clip solo and a lot of people like her deja vu part 'holding this pain' :D

Yoohyeon Buring the Spider is What sets off the Series of Events as seen in the Nightmare Storyline Videos. You and I seems to be another Prequel between Fly High and Chase Me that shows how the Members Got Trapped and became Nightmares/Ghosts. What and Piri are Not Really A Part of The Nightmare Series. They Show Nightmares (especially What)in a more Modern Setting. Deja Vu and R.o.S.e Blue are outside of Dreamcatcher's Story Arch and are Special Collaborations for Mobile Video Games. Dystopia is a New Story Arch Not Related to the Previous Nightmare Storyline. Added Bonus: In the Orginal Nightmare Series there are Scenes of each Member Confronting their own real life Nightmare (which in Deja Vu carries over a little bit Namely the Scene of Gahyeon Falling threw the Air). I don't know if anyone agrees but in my opinion Sua has kinda surpassed Jiu in terms of vocal skills these days. They did a duet together during both Scream and Boca era and besides having a wider range Sua also just seems more stable live. Besides that she's also gotten more chances to show off her vocals in recent songs, and you can definitely tell she's improved a lot since a few years ago. Not trying to take anything away from Jiu, she's obviously still a great singer. Not to mention the 2nd best dancer in the group and the best leader Dreamcatcher could ask for.

In my opinion, JiU skill to control and hold on high note is better than SuA. It is true SuA range is higher than her height (sorry for the joke), but she isn't comfortable when doing high note for long.

In their early releases, JiU used to sing a lot, even in some of the chorus. Nowadays, I believe SuA has improved her vocals and the producers give her some of the high notes and JiU's voice is used mainly in the bridges and whenever they need to suddenly slow down the pace.

Don't know if you look into requests but 'If I Were You' Live by 2NE1 on a program called Sketchbook is great. Good vocals and they sing with really strong emotion. It would be cool to hear a professional's thoughts

I'm an insomnia/buddy and it's a common combination cuz most of us see Gfriend and Dreamcatcher as 2 sides of the same coin. They both have a very unique sound, goofy members, awesome dancers, storytellers, concept queens and, of course: VOCALS. Gfriend is older but they were always bright and cute but fiercy and powerful as well, while their lil hoobae Dreamcatcher is dark, creepy and powerful, but with glances of sweetness and softness. Their title songs are like anime OST and their b-sides are baaaaaangers.

Oh you did react to Fly High, as I was watching your playlist I was wondering =) ... Prequel mini album, the before Chase Me events , how they became Nightmares =)

If you ask me, everything after Fly High follows the prequel storyline and Chase Me follows up on Breaking out. But that's just my opinion, others are perfectly legitimate as well! By the way, spiders are protectors in Native American mythology, that is why a Dreamcatcher kind of looks like a spider web. By killing the spider (after being influenced by darkness), Yoohyeon called the curse of the spider down on them, and they are trying to repair that ever since. 😉 About their singing: I agree with all you said here, although I still don't hear the autotune in Speechless. 😉 There is also a Dingo version of You and I, which is much more fun, less serious, but still shows off their talents. You should react to that as well!

I think Jiu can exchange the part "Can't live without you" with Sua. Sua has a relatively powerful vocal which is suitable to sing in chorus.

I will try to explain it in a simple way. The video is a prequel on how they became nightmare. In the beginning you see the girls live a normal live together in that big house until Jiu saw a spider and captured it. In some cultures the spider represent a magical spirit, so that spider was some kind of spirit and Yoohyeon killed/hurted it with the magnifying glass and fire so by revenge the spider cursed them to becoming nightmare and prisoners between the dreamworld and the real world. So in the video you see each girl one by one becoming a night like Gahyeon with the plants or Yoohyeon with the mirror or Siyeon lost the the dark wood. At the end, Jiu is the last one to become a nightmare and close the gate so curse don't spread outside. That was the more simple explanation that i could think of and i hope it will help you. From a fellow insomnia to an other. 😊 About the live performance, yes it's really live and was recorded with the little mic that they got on them who are use more as talking mic like in variety show so their singing sound very clean and sharp so no effect added. Also Jiu has never been a "belter" her voice is more soft and high pitching, but she is a soprano so her voice get clearer, sharper and more full the higher pitch she sing. I think for me Jiu's voice is more softer and lighter than YH and SY. I think her voice lacks the chesty resonance when doing higher notes so sometimes it sounds weak but her voice fits well when doing prechoruses or bridges which are usually the softer parts in DC songs. Shes considered a Lead Vocalist as well with YH tho. And about that last part with Siyeon, I think its meant to be an adlib rather than a harmony and I think the editor didnt lower SY's part there so it looked like she "oversang" YH.

I just dunno why.. I like yoohyeon vocal colour ..

Jiu is definitely a softer lighter tone, not the belter that Siyeon is. Yoohyeon is a nice balance between the two tones for me.

Yes JiU has a Softer Tone, as well as Dami when she is Sings rather than Rapping. I think Handong as well. Yes Yoohyeon has the Balance and Siyeon has the Best Range.

I've only actually heard Jiu sing in a softer voice. Never heard her belt. She does have a sharper voice when she goes high. You should check out the 2020 guide to dreamcatcher. On another note, I have a question. I'm not a singer but my family is trained in classical music and I did attend some classes. In indian classical we sit down and sing, so that always confuses me because classically trained singers here do actually sing perfectly while seated. Could it be the posture or are they using some different technique?

Yes. You can sing while sitting down fine as long as you have good posture and breath support. But usually we tend to slouch while sitting and it can lead to bad posture which is why we typically recommend singers stand when first learning how to sing.

In case of JiU vocal, i think it is her style and what is her comfortable with. Her voice is really breathy and on the soft side. Even she herself admit she need to change her vocal techniques from Minx to Dreamcatcher style, and she is having a hard time doing that. In the end she just do her best with what she got, that's why in most of their title track she is either in opening, closing, or a bridge; a part where the tension is more chill. JiU voice shine the best on Ballad, Pop, and similar genre that doesn't really need a strong and very impactful voice. If you want to know more about JiU and Handong voice, try listening to July 7th (that song is basically made for them). PS : Like you video and feedback 😊. Oh also, be careful when you want to react to other shows clip, you can get a strike. Best bet is you mirror the clips to avoid that situation.

JiU is a lead vocal, but you could say that yes, she isn't as powerful as Siyeon or Yoohyeon, her voice is much softer. Which is why I am shocked whenever I hear JiU sing the bridge in a BOCA live performance - she sings it VERY forward and full. I would definitely recommend looking at JiU's vocals specifically, similarly to how you did for Siyeon, I think it would be enlightening for yourself, as well as *us* to see what you take from it. A couple performances in particular I think you would be interested in is Dreamcatcher live performance of 'Break The Wall' and 'Dear'. Edit: Also in BOCA, SuA and JiU kinda have a role switch in terms of the types of lines they sing, which is interesting because apparently the way lines get chosen, is all the members sing the song fully, and then Leez + Ollounder choose parts for members based on who sings them the best. Usually JiU sings those softer sections of the song, and SuA often does mirror lines to Siyeon and more full, lower register verses.

Basically, Yoohyeon got corrupted or something (you see her with her hand on a mirror on this MV, with something like black magic dripping from it), burn the spider and cursed them all. They became nightmares (that's why there's a hunter on Chase me and Goodnight, trying to hunt them). From then on, it was pretty much the spider spirit (or witch, idk) haunting yoohyeon and the rest of the girls trying to save her (and themselves). That's why you usually see the girls trying to get to Yoohyeon in the music videos. The story ended within Piri and Breaking Out. JiU said they got trapped forever in the nightmare, they couldn't escape :( Now a new story arc started with Scream and followed by Boca Deja Vu and Rose B.L.U.E are collaborations with games, and their music videos are based on the respective games, so not related to the main story line

You really should react to mamamoo mvs and live performances (after Dreamcatcher), they're the two only groups i would go see live. I enjoyed the video, thx

Super rare, but I'm sure she can hit higher and more powerful notes, during her minx days she's more powerful but now she settled as the bridge queen but her parts are always my favorite

I kinda feel bad for Jiu (you're not wrong tho) but I actually really like her voice, she doesn't really have strong vocals but her voice is so sweet and I think it's beautiful, I also think she improved a lot over the years! I don't know if you checked their Immortal Songs performance yet, but they did one called '인디언 인형처럼', it's live, Jiu got a part with a high note and I loved it! They were really praised for their performances on this show, 100% worth watching!

Jiu is considered a lead vocalist. Maybe this was a bad day haha. But also, the "can't live without you" line is really just a small/short backing vocals-type. But I agree that it would sound better if she enunciate the words better. With Jiu, I see her voice as soft, delicate and airy. I do think it's fragile, but she doesn't seem to struggle to keep in tune which can't be said for some other kpop artists. I don't see her as a belter or a power vocalist like Siyeon or even Yooh. I find her vocal colour very pretty even though her voice technically isn't the strongest and they often use her to contrast between the deeper voices in DC which I love. Your criticism were fair, so don't worry about anybody attacking you for it. It did sound kinda flat for JiUs part. Maybe it's because of the posture? They were sitting through the whole song. And that part where siyeon was singing over yoohyeon didn't sound right as well. Nice analysis tho. Keep it up. I was happily surprised by the double vid uploads.

Fun fact: They filmed the MV in an actual haunted mansion in Paris.

Here's my take on the story for the nightmare series videos. Warning this is going to be long. So the running theory is that Fly High is the start of them turning into nightmares. During the M/V it starts with JiU catching a spider in a jar. In one mythos, spider webs catch the bad dreams and allow you to only have good dreams. The scene with Gahyeon is shown having a nightmare, she's the first to suffer the consequences of JiU catching the spider since she's the youngest. Each one is infected by the nightmare. Eventually once Yoohyeon kills the spider, she and JiU are the only ones not affected yet. Dami is seen with the spellbook after her transformation into a nightmare. Once Yoohyeon kills the spider she changes into a nightmare as well. JiU being the oldest/strongest of the group is able to resist long enough to trap them in the grounds of the school which is now affected completely by the nightmare(Dami's final line changes from "Big black hole in my heart, I'm trapped in the dream" to "Nightmare"). We pick up the story in Chase Me years later when the man shows up at the school years later after the school is transformed into a hotel. This man is a nightmare(ghost) hunter hired to remove the nightmares from the hotel. The nightmares torment the man to scare him away, but he eventually finds the room where the nightmares originate from(the picture that the nightmares cut out actually holds the girls original innocence). This is why he smiles at the end, because he now has a way of defeating them. Good Night is a direct continuation, the hunter has used the spell book to capture SuA and GahYeon in their own personal nightmares (SuA: being restrained, Gahyeon: Falling). Siyeon and YooHyeon are in the process of distracting or being hunted by the hunter's minions. Dami, Handong, and JiU are biding time in a mirror dimension to steal the book and free Sua and Gahyeon. Once they're able to retrieve the book, they free Sua and Gahyeon while trapping the hunter in the Mirror world. At the end they lose the spellbook again(seriously put a dummy cord on that thing!). You and I the nightmares are running a photo parlor taking advantage of the clients and infecting their dreams and turning them to nightmares(Siyeon, Gahyeon, and Handong burning the pictures). However the Spider Goddess finds them in the guise of an older lady, and is revealed when Yoohyeon takes her picture. She curses Yoohyeon and traps her in anoterh world/dimension and infests her body. Yoohyeon attempts to escape as the others perform a ritual to expel the Goddess. They succeed in expelling the spirit, but fail to rescue Yoohyeon from the other world. The story line was supposed to pick up in Full Moon M/V but it was pulled/cancelled or something. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oK2TtNaIfr3YZLA.html You can see a younger man and a little girl. This is obviously past the Fly High era so the theory of it being a young version of one of the girls and the hunter doesn't make sense. From the looks of it, the girl finds an old picture book from the hotel/school with a map showing the location of the book. She finds the book and uses the collected cards to cast herself into the young man's dreams (you can see a dreamcatcher burn away in one scene) capturing his attention and bringing him to her so that she can put a spell on him. In What you can see the spellbook with a Blue Rose(Deja Vu setup?) with YooHyeon being surrounded by the same cards from the Full Moon promo video. So this may be how they reached modern times. It didn't have much connecting this story to the others other than the book. Piri and Breaking Out fall into the story line somewhere. I think Piri and Breaking Out are two sides of the same story. In Piri they fail to find each other only ever running into their personal nightmares or being captured. While in Breaking out, they find each other and are able to reunite. That's the way I understand the nightmare arch. "What" seems like a crossover/setup for the Deja Vu story with the blue rose, and the shot of Yoohyeon and JiU looking at each other and Yoohyeon seemed angry.

Hey Austin, you should check out a clip from a vlive that Yoohyeon and Siyeon did where they sang some of Reflection from the Mulan soundtrack. Yeah, I didn't like when she killed the spider either. I like spiders and even though I used to be an arachnophobe, killing spiders and torturing them is horrible. :( Yoohyeon's my first bias, so when I saw her do that in the MV a few years back when I became a stan, I was like "No, Yoohyeon! YOU STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!" (My second bias is Handong. :3)

"I hear Dami..." I don't know if Dami was backing it, but that was actually Gahyeon... 😉 "Did she kill the spider..?" Seems so, which explains why she was targeted by the "spider goddess" in You and I... Bear in mind, regarding the Nightmare lore, nothing's ever really been set in stone, which makes it all open to interpretation. As I've seen others mention, JiU's "can't live without you" line is _deliberately_ quieter; if you listen to the MV again, you'll notice it's almost a backing vocal...

We appreciate your honest opinion, and they can't be perfect all the time. I think JiU didn't have confidence with her lines in English (? Idk, her vocals are usually better in my opinion (just like you pointed out when she was opening more her mouth)

Very honest, I bet you are a strict teacher 😀. I think JiU, even though my bias, has a smaller range and isn't a belter. Belts usually get all the attention, any amateur can impress an ... Got Talent judge or audience. Or with one classical sounding high note people think you are an opera singer. Compare those to these idols who need to be professional dancers and models in addition to being singers. With the backing track lots of idols maybe can get away with being medium singers or having just one specialty. If you are a really poor one you can always rap or just focus on dance more. (That's why it's so puzzling Dami and Mamamoo's Moonbyul don't sing more.) Being a superb vocalist (Siyeon, Mamamoo) could even be wasted in some groups, with all that choreo and lines split among members. That's why b-sides are often so great. Before kpop I loved Fifth Harmony, but now I wonder what morons managed them. Five vocalists who never almost never really get to shine (ok, except write on me)? Every song reduced more and more to background strippers to some loser ft. the song (one of the reasons I hate rap). Why? Such a waste. Singing soft is probably hard and you don't need everyone to belt. JiU usually gets the opening part and soft bridge parts. You can notice how age/seniority plays a role in Korea, Handong and Gahyeon were added later and have very small parts. I think over time everyone also has grown a lot.

In the live version they aren't using professional microphones, just the lapel ones they use for interviews. You can really hear who doesn't need a microphone at all. Jiu's voice is more suited to ballads since it's soft and sweet. Handong can't belt which is why she is much more prominent on B-side ballads. Dami's singing voice isn't in this one at all. Sua's voice has improved a lot since Fly High which is why she stopped rapping and only does vocals now.

Jiu has a very good voice but I do notice she struggles some with consistency, especially during live performances. Not on every occasion, mind you.

I think Fly High has the worst line distribution out of any of Dreamcatcher's songs so its probably the worst one they could have chosen for that live video. It feels kinda awkward that most of them are just sitting there for the majority of it. I just checked and Siyeon and Yoohyeon make up a whopping 63% of the lines sung. Sua, Handong, Gahyeon and Dami combined made up about 22%.. That's pretty ridiculous. Good thing its a lot more fair these days

@@SirAustin Nothing wrong with the main vocal getting the most lines of course but there is a balance and I'm glad they've gotten better at using that :')

Sometimes Siyeon tends to oversing, but I think she is still a great singer. Jiu and Sua might not be so great in singing but they are the most stable singer when they're dancing, even more stable than Yoohyeon and Siyeon. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. Jiu and Sua are both good vocalists though, *especially* Sua in recent times since she has improved a lot. I don't think its fair to say they're "not so great in singing"
