Great reaction, with the exception that Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 were "unknown" prior to this single being released. They were huge, with several platinum albums in the late 90s, and Rob Thomas was quite well-established as a singer and songwriter. I thought this collaboration with Carlos Santana was Rob Thomas' crowning achievement though!

Seconding this. Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 were already huge. Look at the chart history of their debut album "Yourself or Someone Like You". Push, 3am, Long Day, Real World, etc. They even had their own controversy regarding the lyrics to Push.

This music was a little before I was around so you very lucky and fortunate to hear it fresh. Seems Lake Rob Thomas was at the top of his song writing game around 3 to 4 years In a row give or take. Carlos Santana wanted Rob Thomas to write the lyrics. He never had any intention for Rob Thomas to be the vocalist. Carlos Said he was thinking of so one more like a George Michael type voice for the track. Rob Thomas asked Carlos to just listen Give him a chance and just listen. I thought there was a cool story and a cool interview were Carlos talked on This. At the end of the day Rob Thomas was only supposed to write the lyrics but Carlos Never planned on Thomas Singing this track. At matching this to a few people and showed them a couple interviews where Carlos mentions this. Most people find it hard to even comprehend anyone Doing the vocals other than Rob Thomas. People can't even imagine a George Michael or that type of caliber singer doin this track

Those first 2 albums were really good and they still hold up. I played "Yourself or someone like you" album again recently and there's not a bad track on it.

I went to his concert two months ago in Arizona and he's also one of the most down to earth artists out there he stayed for a long time after the show taking pictures with the fans, also he sounds exactly as the record. Matchbox had a multi platinum album and several top 40 hits with their debut album. So pretty unfair to say he was unknown: BUT it is fair to say that this song didn’t let people forget about Rob and his band. So it was a great lead into the release of their second album This was also the first song that Rob wrote that wasn’t for Matchbox. He had people lined up to write with him after this That being said... I do love that you take the time to research some of the things you review ahead of time and get peoples influences Good luck with the move back to Scotland

Santana has been a great name in music since the 60's. My dad always hummed "black magic woman" as he would cook during his school breaks when he went back to college. He took over the home duties and worked on the mowers and cars while mom just worked her 8 hour shifts. He really spoiled us all. Taught my sister to knit and play a recorder and I changed mom's clutch in her mustang without any physical help. Just hints and advice from him.

So me and a group of friends were traveling around Europe about the time Matchbox 20 was hitting. We would hear song after song from the album on the radio. One of the girls in the group commented about buying the album and we all agreed that it was great. Fast forward a few months and I am headed back to work after a business trip. A coworker and mutual of the girl friend told me she had died. I thought it was a terrible joke. Unfortunately it wasn’t. She died in her sleep of some sort of undiagnosed heart problem. When I last saw her she was young, beautiful and so full of life. She was just a bubbly person that we all gravitated toward. When I hear this band I am reminded of her and our adventures.

I hope I made sense there, I'm not a singer or musically inclined in any way. I just know what I like and learn from reaction videos. They’re doing this song faster than the recorded version. Btw, Rob Thomas was homeless, when he got signed with Matchbox 20. I drove the producers daughter, who told me this, but I’m sure this information is on the internet.

I'd never heard of Rob before this, but LOVE this song with it's incredible Latin vibe. IF so could dance I would be doing it now. Not heard this live version but really enjoyed it - 'Just forget m'bout it! '

Benjamin Tod- Using Again. It's shot as a live song but looks like a music video based on production value. Great song and the emotion in his voice is piercing. Just a man, his guitar and a lifetime of stories to tell.

Matchbox Twenty got huge in the mid-90s in America. If you mean they got big internationally with this, that may be true.

Hi Beth!! The article I read, very interesting by the way, mentioned Santana not having much of a hit in the last few years. One day Santa had this casual meeting on the East coast as I recall, with a very good friend who was part of his group years before around the time of hits like "Black Magic Women" in a capacity as a producer or something like that. This friend wasn't doing much and suggested they get together again. Beyond that I don't remember how "Smooth" came together and unfortunately I didn't save the article. I mention this because the title of the article was how "Smooth became the second largest selling single ever". I love Santana but had never heard "Smooth" before.

I have been a fan of Santana since I was a kid in the late 60's, and my father owning their 1st 5 albums on 8-Track tapes. THIS comment is definitely true on LA "Hit" radio stations that I had to listen to at work, and various public places :p.

Hi Beth, So I'm an old school fan of Santana, as this and The Beatles in the late 60's is what I grew-up on, since my late-Father weaned me on Rock music. He owned the 1st 5 albums on "8-Track Tapes", and we heard them on every trip in my Papa's 67 Mustang Fastback. It's a MUST (I'm not sure you have yet...) that you hear the early era with "Gregg Rolie" on lead vocals and keys (he also co-founded Journey with guitarist Neal Schon who was 18 when he joined Santana as well). Since its Latin/African based, most of their music makes you want to dance, even you have 2 left feet like I do :p. But they were a staple at family parties, with all the other older Latin singers you've been featuring. But all these guys were extremely virtuosic musicians, no matter what line-up throughout the 70's and 80's. Try tracks (Live or in-studio): Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen Everybody's Everything Hope you're feeling better Evil Ways - I hope you do more Progressive Rock and Prog Metal soon Beth :).
