While I love Beyoncé and lot of these clips, I feel like the majority of these included were just utilizing her growls, instead of showcasing her full vocal skills. The moment I don't see dangerously in love from the Beyoncé experience I already know it's not someone who knows her best vocals.

I knew Bey could sing fine enough from the DC days but I personally didn't think that much of her until I saw her sing "The Way We Were" for Barbra Streisand at the Kennedy Center Honors in 08. For me, that moment is akin to probably how people who didn't know Gaga was trained until she did the 'Sound of Music's medley at the Oscars a few years back. I would have liked to see that critiqued, as well as the acoustic Halo in Africa, maybe a live version of 'Ave Maria.' these clips (minus the incredible Listen from Oprah) make her seem a little one-trick, and she is soooo much better than that.

I agree about the growls, Whitney used to do this also and it's alright sometimes but after a while you just want to hear a clear belt. Please react to Whitney "A Quiet place 1987" and also react to Beyonce - At last (technically Beyonce hit every note well).

Growling isn’t a personal choice for her, her voice evolved in a way that since like 2007, her voice will growl in a certain area of notes, depending on so much things. Some days it’ll be more « growly » than other, some days it’ll be clearer. My voice does the same so I understand how her voice works. If I’m trying to sound clear when my voice is supposed to growl, I’m hurting my vocal cords.

As the comments have said before Beyoncé has better compilations. This one didn't focus enough on her lows. The Stevie Wonder tribute in full is actually amazing. But you need to watch it fully her musicality was on point! That all night video full is amazing too. And whoever puts in that Dangerously in Love performance should be detained. So many better ones

Guys I'm pretty sure her growls has nothing to do with vocal folds at all,its kind of a gargle sound so it's just controlled air in the back of the mouth

wwemj213 it is really. My vocal distortions are different. It feels like a lot of controlling air flow, sometimes I push it towards the mask and it feel like pushing other muscles than the vocal folds

1:42 is crazy in love and 9:10 is Why don't you love, though for majority of these clips she tends to change some vocal arrangement when singing live. Her studio versions are usually more reserved compared to the live ones.

For that growl sound to be done healthy, you can think about it with rrr sound but in the back of the tongue, right after the mouth. I searched a lot on how to do it and then come up with this, it thought me and some of my curious growl fan friend well :D . Hope it helps you too :)
