The whole thing isn’t that they can have fun without drugs…it’s them saying ‘oh these drugs? Not ours! We don’t do drugs mister policeman! It’s not weed on the table it’s green Lay’s!’ It’s very sarcastic and funny.

The lyrics contain a lot of contemporary slang and also in the beginning of the second verse there's a hint to one older song in Estonian about poppies and ducks. Then again.. the whole song is also a very clever word play that even every Estonian wouldn't understand. When knowing the lingo, you may find multiple innuendos there and some lines may seem a bit absurd without knowing the context or the exact slang. AND the members of Puuluup folk duo do play the instruments themselves. Probably not on the Eurovision stage, but these are the instruments they play to make their music. You can check in this video how they play them kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6p9qryipa64dLQ.html.

5Miinust (Pronounced Vee-mee-new-st) are a rising band of young men in Estonia known for pop and rap. In the song, they are combing modern Estonian elements you'd hear in their charts with the folk and traditional strings of Puluup, a two piece band that are also well known. The two bands create a massive almagamation that may work for many televoters, since the song is so fun. The dance and chanting will certainly be iconic. The lyrics are about preventing the spread of drugs in the hands of young people, quite a topical thing considering young people and starting to move away from substances at parties. Their music video is worth a look as the audio is MUCH better and you can see a potential staging concept with the two gangs of bands fighting each other. This is qualifying 100% from semi final 2. The jury may not appreciate this, but the televoters will. The audio wasn't too good for the NF but at Eurovision, this will be 100 times better due to the mixing. Currently in my top 5.

I talked to some of my friends from Estonia and as I understood it (by reading translations and the way they act with each other on different parts of the song) it's actually a much deeper message of social inbalance and prejudice in peoples heads cause people judge you when you look a certain way (clothes from dumpster) that you are using drugs, so if you are not rich, you prob abuse substances and they point out in the song how these substances are actually only for rich people and that these took their happines away in sense of, rich people get away with their crimes, but the poor ones who don’t even abuse substances, are getting accused and searched by the police. To me personally I love the song, it is my fave so far. I have huge respect for the fun but so creative way to address a real problem and society issue. Even my parents loved it and they had no idea what it’s about on the evening of the national selection. Well done Estonia ❤

Due to the fact that this song is non-standard and nobody screams or squeals in it like the accepted Eurovision type songs and I will listen to this song even after this Eurovision is over, and I just have 3 songs from the whole Eurovision, in my playlist and I listen to Eurovision for 15 now.

@@HonestVocalCoach Hi Georgina! You don't have to, because people and their cultures are different. This song does not directly represent the essence of Estonian culture, rather the interplay of different musical styles. There is no point in looking for the beauty and harmony of the vocals, the song is just a mix of Estonian folk music, rap&pop, which came so popular in Estonia, and whether you like it or not is a matter of taste... The lyrics have been translated word by word using the help of google translate, the meaning of the lyrics, which are written in (rap) slang, can be correctly understood by Estonians. It's definitely not a banana song that scratched my ear, this song has a social message: don't do drugs. So thank you for your reaction, at least you tried, I'm so sorry it's not your cup of tea, but it's my cup of tea!

@@HonestVocalCoachmaybe it's because you understand neither Estonian culture nor Estonian language? Just a thought, not a bash on your character I am shure you are a lovely perosn, but maybe it would help you to see why you keep disliking and bashing songs that don't fit into neat little western boxes easily understandeble to Brits. Even when you translate the lyrics on google you can't really translate the spirit of the song. Sometimes your comments remind me of people bashing Pollock or Picaso or other art they absolutely don't understand or have the knowledge to understand. And many of your comments (and not just yours) are very west centric, which is a point of view that absolutely excludes eastern european or baltic or nordic or even mediterenian cultures with all their nuances. There are however folks on here in the Eurovison community (germans, americans, spaniards even orher brits) that really try to understand why a people really love what they are sending and why they would be proud to send the song (like we were last year to send Let3) It's a shame...I can't wait to see how you bash greece. p.s. Mama ŠČ was fenomenal. Pozdrav iz Hrvatske.

I think you should look at the lyrics AFTER watching the videos, I agree with the whole "first-glace" reaction as it's what the majority of voters around Europe will be seeing (not looking up the lyrics on their phones). I do think there's some interesting meaning to be found in the lyrics so that's definitely worth checking out for each song and helping that form an overall opinion of the song. I think as a fan getting to know the lyrics/someone's individual take on the lyrics is always fun and gives a wider view of how something will be perceived. Banger from Estonia, I'm sure it'll more polished and the audio better for eurovision, where it's sure to be a huge hit.

Look, even if "that banana song" and this to an extent aren't that serious, you should still recognize that it's a very competently arranged song with a great hook, it's catchy and will certainly attract voters. I know you're the vocal coach and vocals are your main priority in ranking songs but there is more to songs than that. For a rock entry it's more important to have the right energy instead of flawless vocals and I think the same applies here. It's a ton of fun! As an Estonian speaker - that's the worst possible translation.. but tbh it doesn't translate well however you try, because it's essentially a rap song and the lyrics contain a lot of slang. I'm not sure if I can agree. This kind of implies that a song can get away with nonsense or empty and boring lyrics as long as the artist performs some vocal acrobatics to deliver them. But if someone has a more out there, fun, weird, unconventional... etc. entry, then they need to somehow have a reason for picking their genre of music by having something important to say. I'm not the type of person who generally cares about lyrics (I focus way more on the general sound), but it often strikes me how many ballads - while impressive vocally - are incredibly uninspired when it comes to the message of the song. And I don't know why someone singing a text as bland as e.g. "I love you and I hope you love me back" in a well-trained voice is worth more than a person rapping similarly empty phrases or yelling them in a rock song. As a weird music enthusiast it just makes me sad that songs which are out of the box need to justify their own existence. Not to mention how often it happens to Eastern European artists. If you sing in French or Italian, you can say whatever, but if it's a Slavic or Baltic language - you better have some deep message to deliver! I don't like this attitude. (Hope my rambling made sense.)

I think the audience would like to understand the "message" of the song. And many people write here that the deeper meaning can only be understood by Estonians. I agree with you that they're more like talking than singing and unfortunately I don't like it too. But it is also a fact that Eurovision has shown many times that it is not the vocals that are the most important 🙈

Talking? what is rap then? It's nothing like Subwolfer, Norway. Personally, would like much younger performers to represent the lyrics. I'm not mad for it as a song yet.

The way I see it, as an Estonian, is a big f you to some snobby countries in Europe that see us as gopniks and drug addicts. Sorry, the prejudice is there, particularly in UK & Scandi. And this is essentially giving you what you expect, with an attitude. Brilliant.

Heh, you tried. Estonian really seems like an alien language for native english speakers. But you could grok it if you actually tried. Remember, if Estonians can learn english then this gap is mostly in your mind.

Not a fan of this. Way too messy and chaotic. Think I was that person saying “oh you are going to look up the lyrics?” lol 😂 but it was only meant in fun. I think you should do what you feel best cos we love your channel!

Estonia doesn't want to rank high with good singing, but to express street credibility even by taking the last place. Like an insecure teenager, so as not to sound boring: taking risks, trying to be so out-of-the-box. Quite ridiculous...with old men's gymnastics

These two groups of artists (4 rappers + 2 folk singers) are well established musicians with their own original sound and aesthetic. They've been making similar music for years. Just because you didn't enjoy it, doesn't mean that these people made up this style to impress people in Eurovision. Also I don't know why you need to insult their age... The oldest guys are barely 50-something. And even if they were 80, that still wouldn't mean they cannot act weird on stage.
