    i had an american singing teacher that kept telling me to sing 'naturally' and to 'stop changing my vowels'. it was ridiculously hard to explain that he is in australia and i am australian with an australian accent.

    The fact that an American singing teacher noticed you "changing" your vowels is a good sign if you're Australian! Most of us Aussies try singing in a "neutral" accent which often sounds American, embrace the Kasey Chambers and Missy Higgins Aussie singing accent.. hahah. I swear most Americans love hearing Aus accents.. I remember hearing something on the radio when Dean Lewis released "Be Alright" and some radio host was froathing over how he said "mate" ahaha

    Taylor Swift is a fantastic example of how an accent changes per the genre they're singing. Her country albums she had a "country" accent, when she started singing more poppy songs, suddenly the accent is gone.

    I'll give her a pass because it doesn't seem like she's doing anything dramatic to change her voice. Just small changes to fit the style and she still keeps the same tone more or less. The people in this video are doing the most to change how their voice naturally flows and it's not just the pronunciation and such. like Jessie Reyez is trying super hard to keep up that baby tone.

    it wasn't just in her singing. i think that spending all that time in nashville and working with a lot of people in the country music scene kind of rubbed off on her. she wasn't only doing it for singing, she had one when speaking as well. so i don't think it necessarily came and went with the singing, but more likely just because of her scene change in general

    A lot of this video also was criticizing ACTUAL accents. ...like speaking accents. Artists from the UK sound totally different from the US, and you can sometimes legitimately not understand them -- even those who are not going for an 'indie' sound. In their speaking voice, their vowels are different than ours. When the UK, Aussie and NZ scene took off, this sound became more popular here in the US, too, bc it's a cool inflection. It's just the natural progression of music. Things trend. And, even within this trend, I'd say just about all the examples in this video didn't actually sound that much alike. They weren't even in the same genre. But pop music? No one is saying that they have poor skills or are "making up for no talent" bc they all sound the same. And, if understanding them is a necessity in order to be a "good singer", then Ariana's in trouble. ..only, she's not. Neither is Adele or Sia. Three diff genres, all that have something about their voice that makes them hard to understand depending on where your from. But them criticizing black, native, straight UK/AUS, or black+british voices as an 'indie sound'? What???

    People ALWAYS say this whenever this discussion touches on a non-American singer, and it’s always wrong. The qualities of her singing voice to which he was referring are explicitly movements AWAY from her native southern English vowel shapes, and TOWARDS American ones. The prevalent style of contemporary singing for most of the last century has been an American style, which is why almost every singer, regardless of where they come from, Americanises their vowels when singing. If Jessie was overtly singing in her own accent, it would sound completely different to this .

    Exactly. They continually cite SZA as an example. I can hear every word she says clearly. The only reason someone wouldn't understand her is because she often incorporates rap into her music (listen to Love Galore) despite being mostly an R&B/Neo-soul artist. The passages they played are incredibly easy to understand, look, I'll do it for each one. First one (Love Galore): "...Skirt down on me, acting like we, wasn't more than, a summer fling..." Second SZA passage (Drew Barrymore) "...I'm sorry I'm not your baby mama, I'm sorry you got karma coming to you, collect and soak it up right..."

  • @mara8809

    I strongly disagree. The style of singing isn’t something you can crutch on, or make up, ergo Fergis National Anthem. The huskiness and selection of vowel sounds, inflection, and tone are tools to execute a specific sound the singer would like to have. If you heard, for example, lorde and the girl with the bright tone and couldn’t tell them apart, considering the vast differences in their voices (because techniques don’t really mask individual voices) or even just their approaches, that has nothing to do with what they’re doing. Was this overview simplified, yes, but, it’s hard to be lengthy without being disrespectful in regards to the negative, and incorrect generalization including tones, several styles, a variety of natural and artificial accents and executions. Even if you don’t like this one particular style of singing, watching the video, you had to have noticed some were just more soul-y, a few (to my knowledge) were even just not from the us. The video creator used any indicator of “not a basic, accent neutral, style free voice” as a classifier for “not trained” which is more or less shaming artists for taking their creative freedoms with an unlimited amount of options and making what they like to produce. You can personally not like a style without clumping that style with everything else, and disrespect it.

    Not really, this type of vocal technique/style is actually not ideal for your voice & your vocal cords, and might be unhealthy long-term. It’s not necessarily inferior to more classical vocal styles but it is objectively worse for your voice. To use your analogy, I’d say this is more like if the art was painted using an unhealthy posture of the wrist that puts strain on the wrist and puts you at more risk of injuring your wrist, rather than just a different style of painting.

    As a sound engineer in training the most difficult thing I've come across so far is how vocalists use microphones. Lots of airy vocalists can't be heard down a microphone due to their technique. I've had many singers with softer airy voices be too shy to be up close to the microphone so it can be picked up then constantly complain about not being able to hear themselves. It's impossible to turn them up without high risk of feedback and noise. So while I agree that airy voices can be picked up by microphones I disagree that it's a technicians fault and that's because the issue isn't projection, it's proximity to the pick up of the microphone. Not hating, just sharing my experience as a sound tech that deals with these issues from the other end :)

Really loving your channel and the ongoing conversation about technique, creative choice, identity and position and placement of the voice. zhavia is more of a throat singer with some modified vowels and vocal placement towards the back of here mouth rather than a singer doing the 'indie' accent using bad diction to sound distinctive.

    When you brought up Opera I went ‘NO DON’T CALL ME OUT LIKE THIS’ I’ll admit, when singing classically, I think of almost a British accent to give me tall, open sounds, only a touch of bright sounds (e being the absolutely last thing you hear in a dipthong vowel, instead of going straight to that wide sound such as in pop, like the letter/word, I, is more of an AH-(ee), because of course the open vowel allows opera singers to project and healthily carry the sound and note). The genre is ALL about open sounds and open spaces, because closing off affects the pitch and projection (like he said, projection is important pretty much only in opera, because opera is NO MICROPHONES WHATSOEVER)

    That’s like saying Stevie Nicks isn’t unique because she’s putting on an accent bsbsbnd literally every singer puts on an accent to fit well with their voice to see which sounds good or not. And sometimes the indie voice just fits better. Like Halsey is used a lot in these videos and I always get so mad at this cause yeah she has a very indie voice but that singing voice she does makes her voice sound really good. And some artists who use it don’t sound good. It depends. (Also that’s just how she sings Idk why people always make it seem like she’s “faking her singing voice” I’ve heard her live for years and it’s never forced and her singing comes so natural to her. Like people gotta research before making these videos lol)

    Yea... that video isn't just illogical, but is pretty offensive when you actually have a speaking voice like that. In particular, SZA and Khalid. Not that they speak exactly like that, but the way they sing is a natural extension of how they stress sounds in everyday speech. Of course it's more noticeable when ur belting out music, but it seems whoever created this video is just someone who interprets a typical American accent as the 'norm'.

    Andrew Maliberan Oh, I'm referring to the way artists use their voices in general, and it spans genres. It's one reason I can differentiate between eras fairly well... The was people sang in the 50s is audibly different from the 60s, which is different from the 70s and so on. Personally, I think that might be why a lot of "vocal coaches" may dislike the indie girl sound... Because it's very different, and as you get older, different can easily equal bad. All my opinion, though, so take it for what it's worth.

    I think what I really dislike is how they say “can’t they just sing normally?” or something along those lines. There is no normal way of singing just like dancing- there are basics and techniques but essentially everyone’s voice is going to be different based off their personal preference, genre of music, and the mood they’re trying to give so to imply that the way Halsey, Bea Miller, SZA, Zhavia, Khalid, Lorde, and the other two women sing is abnormal, odd, unnecessary, and irritating is very rude to them. They work very hard to become better singers and get where they want to be and at the end of it all even someone like me, who doesn’t know much about singing and has a pretty okay voice, can tell that they are all different in some way. The video was solely based on the creators opinions not complete fact. THEY can’t understand what’s being said, THEY find it irritating- there’s thousands of people who enjoy those artist singing like that and understand them perfectly.

    A simple comparison would do. Halsey next to Beyonce. Beyonce goes from loud to soft, while I've rarely heard Halsey sing above mezzo voce. Beyonce can reach down to C3, while retaining control and up to C6, Halsey's never even reached C3 or C6. Comparing melismata would be a joke. I've heard Halsey be so flat it wasn't even in the lower notes flat range. Therefore Halsey is restricted. And since singing in her airy tone would dry the vocal chords there is a big chance she's gonna have vocal damage.

  • @drigao16

    @drigao16

    Ive Mc Fallen Does she needs to hit high notes? I don't think it fit her style, and beyoncé is a R&b singer. There's a lot of great singer without big range. I'm not saying Halsey is an example of someone in full control over the voice, I'm just saying that only a doctor can tell if her vocals are damaging her vocal chords, we are not.

  • @Gameworks1407

    @Gameworks1407

    Of course, you don't need a big range. But even without range, her control is minimal, meaning she is restricted. If your style doesn't demand at least some amount of high vs low then your style restricts you. Low notes, mid notes, and high notes all give different emotions, how loud or soft you sing them also give different emotions, how you phrase them to which tempo all combine, not being able to sing high and/or low or loud and/or soft restricts you.

    Airyness and breathiness is super attractive when applied stylistically... Look at billie eilish for instance. A lot of the shit she sings about and the style of her music requires it... The "indie voice" is very technical and is not always easy for most... But because people choose to hate in it they don't even bother to try and understand what is required to do it healthily... Simply cuz uts new and unconventional...

    I think their issue with the indie voice is because these diva worshipers go by the book with technique. The indie voice goes against everything they know. It's like when people who rioted during Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in 1913 because of their brains were not used to dissonant chords. I think the better example of Jessie J putting on an accent would be the fact that she is British and I find it funny when Indie singers get bashed while people who are not from the US or Canada sing with an American accent. On a side note I find it funny how some of the same people who called Iggy Azalea fake because Australians don't sound like that have no problem with Keith Urban.

    I have to say, I just discovered you and watched few of your videos, but you got me fired up from the first minutes. I used to hate hearing people sing live and my own singing voice. Thanks to you I became more appreaciative and I am willing to experiment with singing, just for the funsies. You are awesome. Thank you very much! You seem like such a chill dude to hang out with. :D Love your positivity.

    She sounds like the accent she speaks in. I’ve seen interviews of her, her singing to me sounds like her accent with extensions in vowels to fit the song.

    Then again, if all singers sang well-projected and with good volume and didn’t adjust the odd vowel here and there, the world would be a massive broadway show 💁🏼‍♀️ edit: bro i haven’t even got more than 10 likes before, u lovely humans

    that's not true at all. the majority of iconic pop singers who can actually sing do everything you stated. from whitney to mariah to hayley to demi. while they could, most definitely, sing on broadway, that doesn't mean their voices are suited for it, and certainly doesn't mean they're meant for it because they enunciate and actually project. the singers faking their accents would fucking wreck their voices if they tried projecting and enunciating correctly. their throat muscles wouldn't be able to keep up.

    Yes! You gave a clear cut demonstration of how we all have accents when we sing. It’s all about vowel modifications. I love your videos Tristan! Keep it up. 👏 I would love it if you did a video reacting to Demi Lovato’s best live vocals or even Tori Kelly’s PYT riff. It would make me so happy since those are two of my favorite singers. Anyways, keep up the good work boy! You’re slaying! 😍

    I think that the general idea of the video, that the "indie girl" sound isn't really unique is true though. I'm not saying anything about the vocal techniques or anything like that. That specific style is becoming oversaturated. That doesn't make it wrong, or bad. Just used a lot.

  • @mvanpelt9124

    Michael Harris I agree, I just think the video he was reacting to was oversimplifying it by saying Kahlid fit into the indie girl style, and that he used the same exact technique as all the other singers in that video. but, yeah, that’s really true that that technique is really overdone.

    I’ve always felt kind of the same way about this “indie” voice (although I don’t like rly like grouping all these new age singers into one group because every persons voice and techniques are still so different) and I was worried that Zhavia would have that same sort of generic indie sound the first time I heard her, but I’ve realized her voice is actually incredibly unique. In my opinion, the voice that she’s presenting sounds quite natural. ANYWAYS IM JUST RAMBLING BECAUSE IVE JUST RECENTLY DISCOVERED HER and I am VERY impressed and intrigued.

    This person is basically "politely" bashing people who sing like this. These singers are probably comfortable with this style and most of them sound great. Now enunciation can be an issue with some of these singers, and that can be fixed. That "mrskinnyjeansz3" has his jeans cutting off his circulation, I think lol

    The style restricts their artistic freedom, it's like giving a painter a broken brush. This style causes bad pitch precision, awful melismata, no control over volume and causes major vocal problems. No his circulation is fine

    It happens to literally everything women like right up until men decide they like it. Star Trek. The Beatles. Video Games. It's happening currently with fanfiction, despite franchise tie-ins being payed fan fiction. This is literally just 'i don't like that women don't sing like the specific men I like to listen to'. Letting you g girls and women be happy and have fun takes so much less energy!

    I didn't really get that from the video, I saw as them having this idea of the indie voice and then searching for any examples that slightly resemble it to prove their point. They used Khalid as an example as well, so I don't really think gender was a factor, it's just more common with female singers
