    "MITCH SLAPPED” Yes to everything that has been recommended so far and I would like to throw in Bohemian Rhapsody. Every member of this group individually is incredible but Mitch is special. In the beginning of their career the group was asked in an interview who they thought was the best singer and without hesitation they all pointed to Mitch. Scott once said that whenever he has difficulty with staying in key he looks to Mitch. They also have done their own music, not just covers, which I think has been underated. You should check it out as well. Three Grammy’s so far.

    Actually he isn't a 'counter-tenor'. He isn't a Tenor at all. Remember the basic registers of the human voice SATB (Soprano Alto Tenor Bass). Mitch is an incredibly ultra-rare (like making flawless diamonds seem common rare) adult male Alto. Then he is rare in his projection and power. Then he has trained it to a virtuoso instrument. Basically, he's unique essentially. He can sign 'down' into the Tenor range, but can't really get the 'bottom' at all with any power, but good LORD can he get to the top of the Alto range with power and projection. If you want to see the difference watch them perform Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. The note where the drummer from Queen (who is a 'high' or counter-tenor) has to go falsetto Mitch hits 'full voice' and your jaw will just drop.

    The tenor is Mitch Grassi and you should check him out on a channel he shared with the baritone, Scott Hoying called Superfruit. They did a skit from Wicked called Defying Gravity and that is exactly what Mitch did in that one. Talk about range😱

  • @toni-annmyers3604
    @toni-annmyers3604 Жыл бұрын

    Seeing a vocal coach totally Mitch-slapped is always fun 😆 PTX is: Scott Hoying-tall blonde, baritone but has a huge range. Covers bass when bass is singing lead and can sing up to a tenor with a very strong falsetto. Kirstin Maldonado-“the girl” alto/mezzo/soprano and can sing whistle notes. Mitch Grassi-angel/tenor/countertenor/soprano. Even when you think you’re used to his voice, he will get you with what is known by the fans as the “Mitch slap”. Note-Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie are childhood friends who have been singing together as The Trio since high school. They’re very “in tune” with each other and that bond comes through in how tight their vocals are (for example their vibratos are often perfectly in sync). Kevin KO Olusola-beatboxer and tenor with incredible falsetto, Kevin also plays cello and beatboxes on some songs (known as “cello boxing”). Avi Kaplan (2011-2017)-long hair and beanie in this video, basso profundo but has trained himself to sing up to a low tenor. Matt Sallee (2017-present)-not in this video, bass/baritone and can also beat box I will second/third/whatever all the Pentaholics saying you should watch The Prayer for Mitch’s higher register in a more classical style. Also, the bonus of Scott’s rich baritone in Italian is 🤌🏻💋 Another one that doesn’t get mentioned a lot is PTX performing with John Williams’ orchestra for a Star Wars tribute at the AMAs. You get to hear them flex their chorale chops rather than their pop-vocal abilities, and Mitch truly sings as a soprano in that performance. Star Wars tribute: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZucktqEp8W9mps.html (starts about 2 minute in) I will also recommend both live versions of Hallelujah. The first is with the original bass, Avi, from their 2016 Christmas special, and the other is with their new bass, Matt, from this past Christmas tour 2021. 2016: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpV6qtSfncmuksY.html 2021: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWWej7moqdiTlMo.html

    Mitch Grassi (countertenor) is my favorite vocalist ever. It isn’t only his range, but the amount of control he has while he’s up in the stratosphere is unbelievable. He’s also incredibly consistent and sounds just as good, if not better, live. Live version of Joyful, Joyful from the evergreen tour really showcases his control. As does Carol of the Bells from Christmas under the Stars special. Also live. The Prayer is a must listen. Can you feel the Love Tonight! The Evolution videos. Especially Michael Jackson, Rihanna, and Ariana Grande. 90s Dance Medley. Gosh I could go on about this group! Also. Their original music is OUTSTANDING

    Mitch Grassi is the counter tenor. You asked what he's capable of... His highest note recorded for a song was a harmonized Bb5 background note. He more regularly hits A5s, but those didn't start showing up until 2016ish... and his lowest recorded note for a song is an A2. Someone mentioned The Prayer, and that's a great suggestion for all three of the "leads" (Matt/Avi, the basses, and even Kevin, the beatboxer, sometimes get leads, but they're primarily the percussion section. The trio rotate solos and leads fairly evenly)... Anyway, all three soloists really shine and show off their growth as singers but Mitch just slays the Celine Dion part. Most of my very favorite Mitch songs don't have videos, but everyone is going to recommend the Aha! live at Star Vista video... it was shot on a phone from the audience so the quality's not perfect, but it was Mitch's first known A5 - live - and he killed the entire performance.

    Enjoyed your reaction, but a quick tip: Your volume is much lower than the video (which is fine), however when you comment during the video...its difficult to hear you. When you paused, I could hear you perfectly fine, so I'd recommend either tweaking your volume or pausing when you speak, cause I'd like to better hear what you say. Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! Second tip, their record label (Sony/SME) is notorious for blocking reactions so you may need to lower the opacity or put a filter over the video in the future if they come at you with the copyright blocks.

    I encourage you to watch their live version of this song (the older one with Avi in it) for comparison. No studio effects and it is just as good, if not better. than this official video. They don't do songs they can't perform with the same quality live. There is another more current version with Matt Salee who replaced Avi. It is wonderful, too. Mitch has been and always will be my favorite. And its not just his incredible unique unbelievable talent but its also a gift he has not just of musical knowledge hes mastered and hes only 30 (!), but his ability to draw out the emotion of his audience and ptx knows this and showcases his voice over everyone else in some way. But if you watch a group whether theyve seen mitch sing or not, (well once the shock wears off from first mitch slap) they smile. Its a shock at first even after 100 times bc his voice is so UNIQUE. once in a generation tyoe. But then its like soon your drawn into emotion and this is why out of them all its his voicr that will bring on the tears. And i LOVE you for recognizing he is a COUNTER tenor right off. So many just say tenor with upper range. And hallelujah doesnt even have his upper range for his ability. This was mid range for him! But only a few got the counter tenor this fast. You definitely know your profession. Can you explain on your next ptx video what a counter is and how rare are they? Id love a professionals definition. Good job, maam!

    Missy, loved your reaction. Be careful, you are headed toward becoming a "Pentaholic" (Pentatonix fan). The list above (including the Billie Eilish cover) are excellent examples of Mitch Grassi doing his thing ("Mitch-slapping" listeners). What makes Pentatonix iconic is it's unique blend of voices, their individual voice ranges, and their ability to perform such complex arrangements. Also, the range of genre they are able to do is amazing. I recommend you watch their collaborative video of Jolene they did with Dolly Parton (for which they won a Country Music Grammy). The other two Grammys are for Daft Punk medley (electro-techno), and for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (Tchaikovsky). They have done many collaborative works with artists of many different genres, and they have produced original content, as well. They do have an amazing recording engineer who polishes their studio work. (There are videos that explain who they are, where they came from, and the primary people who work with them.) However, they are well prepared to reproduce their arrangements when they perform live. They are capable of singing complex dynamics and effects without the aid of special engineering. There are plenty of live performances to choose from. They all keep busy with their own solo and collaborative outside projects. Word of caution, their copywrite owners can be strict about using their official videos. Using a screen fade effect, etc., can help with avoiding being blocked. There are other techniques, but try to avoid the ones that include cutting out bits of the song. That is especially annoying. Good luck, and thanks for reviewing Pentatonix. So glad you enjoyed it!

    A beautiful version by the ever-so talented Pentatonix. But Mitch does not have a 6 octave range. You don't hear him sing baritone level like Scott/Matt, nor whistle tone. He does, however have a great voice without doubt, one of the best in pop-music. That said, he does not reach the genius in vocal range and control and once in a generation talent of Dimash Kudaibergen, an opera/pop-singer from Kazakhstan who is the best singer in the world and who does at least have a 6 octave range (from bass-notes to high soprano). For those who love Mitch's high notes (including perhaps the vocal coach above) Dimash is someone to check out!

    @@northernlights9814 Mitch has sung Take On Me which I believe is baritone at it's lowest notes. It's just rare for him to sing those lower registers. But anyway...I did not say I think he has a 6 octave range. I said the internet says so. And yes his lowest is a growl and his highest is a sharpie imitation in whistle notes. He doesn't sing that high or sing down in the bass range.

Listen to Defying Gravity, he hit that note, be doesn't want to do it in normal singing, because he's afraid going high too much will screw up his voice. I can understand that, and support his decision. Since I don't know if it will or not.

    First singer is Scott; then Avi, then Kirstin; then Mitch; and beatbox is Kevin. I've heard more versions of this iconic song than I can count. And some of them are Outstanding. But for me, with two-thirds of a Billion views on YT, this is the all time best performance of this song. Can't get through it without tearing up. They have many great performances, but my other two favorites are: "The Prayer" kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaKq3Nl6gNTUmbg.html and "Amazing Grace" kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZakj5t7db3LYcY.html Would love to hear you reaction to them. I loved your reaction to this iconic song and in my opinion, this iconic performance by Pentatonix. This video has almost 680 million views. However, there is indeed a live version that some prefer and think even better than the video. It will blow your mind and here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpV6qtSfncmuksY.html The first soloist is Scott Hoying (baritone), the second is the original bass or in Avi Kaplan's case (pronounced Ah-vee) a basso profundo, the third soloist is the angelic Kirstin Maldonado, the fourth is Mitch Grassi (counter tenor extraordinaire) and last but not least the beat boxer and tenor is Kevin Olusola. Scott, Kirstin and Mitch were childhood friends. Avi and Kevin came on board as the group's rhythm section almost to the day that they began the 3rd season of a televised singing competition called the sing off which they won. Avi majored in opera and classical and Kevin was studying to be a doctor. Avi is founder and co-director with the band's arranger/producer Ben Bram and Rob Dietz of the a' Cappella Academy in Los Angeles. The band has three Grammy awards won during their earlier career and is scheduled to be added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year. Mitch Grassi is a one-of-a-kind singer/artist. In the PTX time capsule you will find many outstanding performances by Mitch. Many PTX fans can attest to what we call being Mitch slapped. When you think you are ready you should react to the live performance captured by a fan in Singapore of the song Aha written/performed by Imogen Heap. It leaves many a reactor never to be the same. Here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4hmsM9tlrzTeZc.html Avi left on good terms with the band in September 2017 due to the stress of the extreme touring schedule and his mother was fighting cancer. Avi is an amazing solo artist. You should check him out too. Matt Sallee is the current baritone/bass for the group and he has a beautiful voice and fits in perfectly.

    I would recommend you react to or at least listen to Avi Kaplan's original song released this year - "All Is Well". While there's a version he did as a duet with its co-writer Joy Williams, this solo one is extraordinary. It was filmed in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands during Avi's European tour earlier this year, and, of course, the church's acoustics enhance the natural resonance of his sonorous voice. The original trio (Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi and Kirstin Maldonado) had known each other for years prior to forming Pentatonix - they were even on an episode of “Bones” prior the creation of PTX, cast (typecast?) as members of a college acapella group. They added a bass (Avi Kaplan) and a beat-boxer (Kevin Olusola to perform on “The Sing Off”, ultimately winning that competition show and starting them on their path to fame. Avi left the group amicably in 2017 and continues to perform solo. The bass position has since been filled by Matt Salee. Scott is a baritone who fills the bass roll when Avi or Matt is singing. Kirstin has a powerful soprano/mezzo-soprano voice. Matt is a tenor altino (counter tenor) with an amazing 6 octave range. Kevin occasionally sings (and has a beautiful voice as well as being an accomplished cellist and saxophonist) but is the vocal percussion/beat-boxer of the group so usually fills that role rather than singing. People often think there are others (back-up singers in studio recordings or a rotation of female/tenor male singers), but their amazing sound is produced by just the five of them. Kristin and Mitch frequently change their look (sometimes radically) leading folks to thing there are others, but nope. It’s just these five people performing and their live shows sound just like their videos.

    One that comes to mind is Bohemian Rhapsody. Plus they manage to pay homage to Freddie and Queen at every opportunity during the course of that arrangement. And Mitch, the countertenor, makes his voice into a convincing electric guitar and Kevin, the beatboxer, creates an entire drum kit complete with cymbals and Avi generates a wind machine, and they do all of this with their voices only. Yes, Mitch is holding a megaphone, but it is a prop only, as he makes the guitar with his voice in the live version without a megaphone.

    First singer: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Second singer: Avi Kaplan, lyric bass, and his lowest low will wow you as much as Mitch's highest high. Scott handles the bass when Avi has a solo. In 2017 Avi had to leave the group for personal reasons, but helped them find a new bass, Matt Sallee. Third Singer: Kirstin (Kirstie - rhymes with "thirsty") Maldonado, mezzo soprano. In late June this year (2022) she gave birth to her first child, a baby girl. Mother and child are doing well. Fourth Singer: Mitch Grassi, counter tenor with a *6 octave* range! He wasn't even trying hard on the high notes in this song. Beat boxer: Kevin Olusola, another lyric baritone (he does sing occasionally and has a beautiful voice). Also a cellist and saxophonist, speaks several languages including Mandarin, and went to Yale pre-med. Scott and Kirstie were classmates in high school, and Mitch was one year behind them at the same school, so they were friends. When they wanted to go on The Sing-Off in 2011 they were informed that their group needed at least 5 members, so they went looking for a bass and a beat boxer. All 5 members have actual ranges beyond their nominal ranges, and you don't need to be told that their control and timing are perfect. They're careful to make sure that no one is slighted when it comes to solos, and whoever isn't soloing is making the harmonies *work* for the soloist. All of them act like family, though they do have families of their own outside the group. I see a lot of love in Pentatonix.

    Mitch Grassi has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. There are so many recommendations to make. I'm sorry I don't have time to look through all of the comments. I'm sure some, if not all, of these have already been suggested. But these are my suggestions for videos that showcase Mitch's amazing talent: Defying Gravity (on the Superfruit channel), Aha! Live in Singapore, Royals (Lordes cover), Gold (Kiiara cover), Rise (w/Superfruit, Katy Perry cover), The Prayer...there's so many! There's also some great videos to watch that show his vocal range. His tone is just so clear, and his mastery of his mixed voice is pretty much second to none. I often feel like listeners falsely believe he's flipping into a falsetto when really he's masterfully using his mix. I'd love to hear you opinion on some of those videos that have been suggested, where that's concerned. Loved your reaction. You've earned a sub! LOVE listening to vocal coaches break down Pentatonix, especially Mitch. :)

    For live performances, especially to showcase Mitch, I recommend Aha! (from Singapore). It's recorded on a phone so the quality is questionable, but the talent is not. Also Love, Again which is a Pentatonix original song. There's a live version that they sing in some back hallway somewhere and Kevin's the only one with a mic. It legitimately sounds studio quality. Now to really showcase Mitch's voice, watch Defying Gravity by Superfruit. He sings it in the original key and even goes higher than the original with a tone quality that will bring tears to your eyes.
