The concept of erecting screens to shield the view of accident sites from passing motorists is brilliant and should be implemented throughout the U.S. I think that motorists rubbernecking at accident sites cause more delays than the accidents themselves!

I tend to agree on the screens. Although in the States we would probably sell advertising space on them for personal injury law offices and auto insurance;) On a more serious rant, it’s just way too easy to get a driver’s license in the U.S. If it was truly administered as a privilege, maybe we would have safer roadways. Automotive safety advancements can’t keep up with the decline in common courtesy and the epidemic of electronic device induced attention deficit. Ironically, yes…more screens.

I mean, I do kinda like the wreckers you have. I just find it curious they are used for pretty much anything and there's rarely smaller equipment, except for that single tiny flat bed which is merely usable for recovery of a broken down vehicle. that being said: I massively respect what recovery companies can actually handle with nothing but a wrecker. That is pretty impressive, allbeit there's usually a bit more brute force involved with less concern for added damage to the vehicle to be recovered. As a German, though, what fascinates me time and time again, is the insane variety of equipment just the fire brigade has. They have everything: busses, regular trucks, cranes, wheeled loaders... any working utility vehicle you can imagine there is at least one fire vehicle of it. There's many great compilations here on youtube if you're interested. And if you asked anone 90% of people would say fire only operates regular firetrucks, ladders and maybe some smaller utility trucks and vehicles...

The surviving truck driver was a hero for making the space for the 68 year old to escape the crush zone. The world would be a safer place with more drivers like that on the roads. One question pops to mind, why didn't the crushed truck get pulled off the highway? I like the privacy fence, a great way to stop the rubber neckers and secondary accidents

Ok, I mis-spoke in a comment. The load did not shift, you can see at about 1:20 that it is still flush with the front of the trailer. The overhang appears to be a tire diameter, so about 3 feet, not 6 or more, as many say. The warning flag is hanging down at 1:23, so one was present. The tow operators are slacking the air brakes so they can move it as well as disconnecting the drive shaft. That was some rolling force to take the front bumper and frame member up that high. The tow pin is above the deck of the load area. As many have said, it seems like it was probably instantaneous death. We will never know why he didn't even try to slow. Condolences to the family.

Unfortunately Romanian truck- drivers are known in Germany to drive extremely reckless, too fast, without paying attention. He didn't see, that the traffic had stopped in front of him, probably was busy and concentrating on something else. Its not always their fault though, i think mostly they get a lot of pressure from their employer to obey deadlines. Maybe his boss was on the phone to tell him to go faster to get the next load. 😢

In my country one of such driver did a live facebook video feed while driving and overtaking on a main road and get hit by a heavy truck and killed him and his 7 passengers... Some people are really not meant to be on the road. (I don't know what happened in this particular accident, I just reacted to your comment because we have the very same problem with those drivers here as well. Also the horror caravans where a car trailer is loaded with a flatbed truck (which is already illegal due the weight rules) and on that flat bed there is a X6/Porsce Cayenne etc. And all of this gets towed by a small truck below 3.5 tons or a small suv... Ridiculous, sometimes they cause huge accidents on our roads. Also the mandatory sleep times.. they drive thousand of kms without sleeping and sometimes they just fall asleep and then such accindents can happen or worse... killing innocent drivers/passengers on the road. And sadly, the 1000+ EUR police fine doesn't hold them back, they win much more money because they get caught only a few times....

The truck that was destroyed must have been going really fast, didn't see the stopped traffic up ahead & either brakes failed or didn't brake in time. He hit the rear left of the car first, then the stopped truck in traffic, that was stopped. Speed kills, as they say.

These crashes are always the same. Either big semi trucks, or vans like this one, crashing at high speed into stopped traffic in a straight road, sunny day. People either texting, or doing something that is not looking at the road. This time the cars in front did a good job and saw it coming, some other times innocent people die because these distractions. TVs should show aftermaths like this one and many others found here, in short videos, to raise awareness. People think they're smarter than everyone.

Noticed how fast and quick they are on the help and rescue, with complete equipments and not a lot of "RESCUERS" standing around, not much police either who are just killing time and just being nosy, and the traffic is smooth, they don't have to close the highway. Unlike in the US.

I think the situation got better after a change in law. If you take pics or video of an accident, you can potentially go to jail for up to two years. Rubbernecking is a no-no in Germany. That said, we still have our share of crashes on the opposite lanes due to slowing down and staring.

No. Commercial media always blames the vehicle, never the drivers. Passive language is used with car crashes for the same reason it's used with rape (i.e. "woman raped", not "unknown man rapes woman"): they're trying to blame the victim and make them the target of questions, not the one at fault. "Man killed in truck collision", not the driver speeding and tailgating. "Pedestrians killed by car on sidewalk" not speeding driver runs over and kills kids, something has happened multiple times.

Most likely the result of inattention to the road ahead. Cell phone or other distractions can kill you. As a truck driver, I was taught to look at traffic miles ahead. Be aware of slowing or stopping traffic. A moment's distraction can be fatal at highway speeds.
