VLOG | Snow, Anxiety & Running Q&A

I'm back to Sunday uploading, and yes, it's another long one! (Soz) Think of this as two videos in one though. First part is vlog, second part is running q&a. I hope you enjoy and thank you for watching.

Absolutely resonated with me when you said - think about the person waiting on the other side of the run. I know how much happier and relaxed I am after a solid run. Exercise, and running in particular, is so much more about the mental benefits than the physical benefits for me these days.

I cannot believe those comments about you not being able to talk about skincare.. do these people realise that beauty magazine journalists aren't qualified but their full time job is to test out skincare and write about it in Grazia? people are constantly firing special attacks toward influencers. Love the vlog as always lovely xx

Brittany, I love your vlogs aestheticly and atmosphere-wise and especially your openness about your anxiety is very helpful as most of us are struggling currently. It is very strong of you to be so open about it in such a vulnerable position as so many people will watch your vlog. I am a psychologist and feel psychologically very unwell at times right now, which is to be expected in this state of the world this time of the year. Knowing that you, a person I admire for her style, also feels this way does help me. Yet your description of your anxiety attacks as much as I appreciate your openness also worries me from a psychological point of view. I hope you are maybe seeing a psychologist...? Obviously you know best and it is completely your choice and judgement. Just wanting to let you know: anxiety attacks are serious. Also I’d say they don’t need ONE trigger but they may come from it just being too much for you at the moment. It’s maybe a cumulation of all the work and private stress and Covid built up over the last months. But obviously I cannot do anything but hypothesise about your personal experience. You are the one to judge. If it helps you, which also only you know, as much as I love and appreciate your weekly content and find your vlogs soothing and they help me with my own anxiety, you can always take a break. I really do not mean to judge too much and hope this comment finds you well. All the best for you, Anna

Thank you for being so honest about the struggles that you're having at the moment too. My mental health isn't great at the moment and I think it helps to know that not everyone is being this super productive person that is just getting on with things. I ran pretty regularly a couple of years ago and went from barely being able to run for 5 minutes, to running a 10km, which I never thought I'd be able to do. I changed jobs and haven't run regularly for a while, but started Couch To 5km a few weeks ago and already it's making such a difference. I'd felt awful for most of the day and then went out for a quick 25 minute run and it made me feel so much better.

Love your vlogs, as ever. The snow thing is so funny, my husband grew up in the UK but I didn't and he has *no* experience of shovelling snow. We got a freak 40cm here in the Swiss flatlands and I was right out clearing the patio while he seemed to wonder why I was bothering. In Montreal where I studied there are even snow plows for the pavements, which I really wish we had here. Anyway...so glad you did this chat about running. I did it as a teen and then took it up again in middle age after various problems with ankles and feet and worked up to a 10K (which became a 7K last year as they adjusted it for social distancing). Such a milestone! But I also wanted to say: always, always stretch, at least if you're middle-aged! I am not a professional or anything, just a lazy person who ran more and more for mental health reasons during the pandemic and was too lazy to stretch despite knowing how important it was. I ended up with my Achilles really sore and have been downgraded to walking for some weeks now, with the resulting hit to my daily mood. Luckily (in a way) the Achilles thing coincided with all the dumping of snow we've had (not worth it honestly, if it's not cleared it just gets packed down and icy and twisting something is harder to recover from when you're not 25 any more). Btw I have the Murakami book about running on my to-read list thanks to you. Be safe and healthy and thank you for your lovely channel. xo

The only marathons I've been doing recently are your vlogs! Discovered your channel a week or so ago and have been enjoying moving backwards in time. Popping in here to comment now because I've been hoping to see you talk more about running. From what you said about Murakami, I'm guessing that you may have already read his book What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. What he spoke about there with regards to mental and creative discipline and running as a solo experience really piqued my interest even though I have always had terrible stamina (and terrible discipline!). Only recently picked up running a few months ago as a way to get out of the house and I don't regret any of it... Will be keeping your tips in mind and looking forward to your running snippets in future vlogs!

Hi Brittany, I just have to comment! You inspired me to get out and run. It's 25 F here. That's -4 C? so I had given up on working out outside ... until spring but it wasn't terrible. I did the 2.75 mi loop around my neighborhood (no traffic so you can run in the street) and I warmed up quickly. I was just going to walk but I ran at least half of the time. And, yes, my end of the run self was so grateful to my before the run self.

Anxiety doesn't need a trigger. Instead, see your panic like an escape valve. Your body is releasing energy, stress, and emotions that have been kept inside. Going for a walk is one of the best things you can do. Maybe try meditation? It can aid in reducing panic attacks. Thanks for sharing your running journey. I also run for my mental health. I love seeing Dean in your videos.

Just to follow on from a few points that Brittany made in the running portion of this blog. When it comes to judgement when running, how i got over it is buy telling myself that if i am aware of people in my surrounding, than i'm not focused enough on myself and the run. In terms of running gear, i buy all of mine from Primark and its served well, washed well and only spend money on trainers (which is extortionate) I found gate analysis good, and the recommended footwear made a huge difference. I used to (before my preferred shop closed down) used to get this done every time it was time to replace my shoes. I also agree with the music aspect. I often change my playlist but keep the favourite songs that i know will give me a boost of energy when I'm feeling fatigued or lacking motivation. if you have pronation issues or ongoing injuries, i recommend seeing a physio one or twice a year, and also having a sports massage about the same. Just my £1 worth from my experience.

  • @BrittanyBathgate1

This is such a good point in regards to judgement when running. I really notice this when I'm not focused properly, I start getting paranoid about the people around me in comparison to when I'm so lost in a run I don't notice a single person around me.

Ugh, I wish I could listen to music whilst running. I find the tempo of the music disrupts my rhythm, I end up running too fast and can't achieve the distance! I gave up and found just taking in the ambient noise relaxing and I enjoyed not having my phone with me. TBH I'm a jogger, not a runner, however, I do really enjoy the peacefulness of being alone, free from other distractions. Thanks for sharing your journey 😀

Top runners (although I'm more of a lolloper to be honest) beginners tip which i wish I'd known - don't buy lots of gear you might hate running (like you said) but running socks are essential in my opinion. Emo at heart for running 🖤 You NEED to run to My Chemical Romance, the Black Parade album. Start to finish, the tempos are so great for running and I always feel quite theatrical when I run to this; I really enjoy it, so you might too!

strangely this isnt showing up on my subscriptions page / no notification! just wanted to let you know, anyhoo will enjoy this surprise upload with my morning coffee :D Edit cant wait to see the TV up i hope your spare parts didn't take long to come. my Anxiety has been bad this year and is coming out in the form of OCD that's equally super annoying. when I'm feeling low/anxious i try to bury myself in a deep documentary or drama and really i should exercise with something like Hiit or even dancing but i don't like getting sweaty and out of breath. I hope you find something that can help lessen the anxiety don't feel guilty if that means doing nothing but watching / reading.

Thank you for sharing. I’d like to caution that running in the morning on an empty stomach can spike cortisol levels in females particularly, which done consistently can cause bone density loss, stress fractures and loss of periods. I’m mentioning it because it happened to me and since then I have researched it and found a link. I strongly recommend eating something small with readily available carbs (high GI) before runs such as crackers, dates, ripe bananas, white toast etc. don’t make the same mistake as me!!

Hi, just wanted to add something that might be useful to beginner runners. There’s a physiological state that your body reaches while running called ‘steady state’ but it takes about 15-20 minutes, or about the first mile/2K to reach it. Your breathing steadies, your heart rate evens out, and your body settles in for its new job. It can be frustrating for beginners because getting to that state takes time, and it feels very hard during that initial span to want to keep going. I’m here to encourage any beginners to keep going! Interval training - running for a bit, alternating with brisk walking - is an excellent way to build distance and endurance, as well as prevent injury by not going too far too fast. A good rule of thumb is to never increase more than 10% per week (either distance or minutes) as that is a proven amount that the body can cope with each week. Running is also essential to my mental health, but I’ve had to overcome several injuries over the past few years that have kept me from being able to reap the rewards of this sport. So, I’m mindful of how vital it is to keep at it, but not to push too hard. A healthy runner is a happy runner. ❤️

You have such an eye for dressing in oversized shapes! Do you have any advice on how to to embrace shapes that are not traditionally seen as "flattering" for petites? I know skinny jeans are supposed to make me look taller, but what if I hate skinny jeans? I never feel truly comfortable in close fitting clothes.

Would you mind sharing some podcasts that you enjoy listening to? I have been trying to get more into podcasts, but there are so many out there and I'm not really sure where to start.

I too have been having really bad anxiety lately that as definitely affected my sleep and mood. I sometimes wake up at 4am and have to go and sit outside my building in the freezing cold we are currently in the below zero temps (I live in Toronto Canada) to catch my breath. I just keep telling myself that “tomorrow is a new day” and I also reach out to my doctor how is amazing

Hang in there Robin!. The current extended lockdown in Toronto is testing my mental health just as bad. We’re social animals and so too many hours in isolation and lack of rich social life is a crisis to our psyche. Try committing to daily evening walks. It helps.

@@Sam-tq6xr hi Sara thanks for reaching out. I suffer from depression and anxiety and while on a good day it manageable it’s been worse with the lockdown. I try to go for a walk everyday (I live down by Sugar Beach) and try to go down there for a walk as much as possible. Hope you are doing better. And thanks for he advice I might try evening walks instead. 😀

@@robincraig3129 Robin, I am sorry to hear about your suffering. The best advice I got that helped me is to not fight the anxiety once it starts. Try to focus on your breathing and do not try to silence it. Instead turn inwards and ask yourself is something wrong? Is there something I should be worried about. If the answer is no, then accept the anxiety as a passing irrational feeling and be at peace with its temporary presence and don’t fear it. I find it’s when I try to get rid of the anxiety or rush its exit, it seems to get worse. So I learned to Let it be and go about my day. Evening walks help a lot. Give it a shot. Somedays, If you manage to get up, eat and shower it is good enough!. Go easy on yourself. It will pass🙂

@@robincraig3129 One more thing Robin, order helps tremendously. Try to be consistent with when you rise, when you go to bed. keep order of things around you so you have a sense of control over your life. Even something as simple as making your bed as soon as you get out of it or showering before breakfast, walking before dinner or doing the dishes before bed time helps me alot. You don’t have to be strict but doing your best is more than good enough.
