VLOG - Massive monsoon storm and flash flood North of Kingman Arizona July 25th 2021

It's been a rough few days here. We were hit dead on by a strong monsoon thunderstorm. Well over an inch of rain in about half an hour, huge winds and lots of lightning.

    Welcome to Arizona from one who was born and raised here. Always amazing to me to see how many people get stuck in washes after they ignore the "Do not enter when flooded" signs right before the wash...

    Worth mentioning: Arizona has a "stupid motorist" law ARS 28-910 www.azleg.gov/ars/28/00910.htm Basically, a motorist who drives around barricades or other road closure markings and has to be rescued from water can be (and usually is) charge for the cost of their rescue.

  • @ThinkerOnTheBus

    @ThinkerOnTheBus

    @@flagmichael That is if they are fortunate enough to be rescued. Some drivers are completely ignorant of how little water is required to sweep one's vehicle away. Then some of those drivers will inevitably learn the hard way by unsuccessfully attempting cross a section of road that has a wash flowing over it. Hopefully, they will have the chance to use this new found knowledge in the future for their own benefit. Yet, some will never have such an opportunity . . . and then some who get washed away while inside of their vehicles will never have their bodies recovered. Their vehicle will be found without any trace of their bodies.

    I'm a surface-water hydrologist by profession. That was very interesting. I'm a little surprised that there wasn't some grading away from the house. I would expect that the house would be slightly elevated from the surrounding grade to promote drainage away from and around the house. I've seen a couple of debris flows and they are nothing to scoff at. That was some substantial flow down the road so I'm not surprised that boulders were moved. A lot of folks don't think it rains in the desert. It doesn't very often, but when the storms come... they really come. Glad you're alright.

    That is my first thought. There are a lot of homes in this area where the slabs are not elevated. It takes only one rain event like this to cause expensive damage. But I guess builders have talked to code people out of that requirement to save money for the onwer and increase profits to the builder. Like they did when aluminum wiring was the "way to go". I'll bet plastic PEX piping will rear its ugly head in 25 years as I read the disadvantages of PEX.

    That house’s foundation is a code violation here. If you have any area of raised elevation without drainage between you have to build on a (8-12”) elevated foundation. That style is called ‘on-slab’ and is only allowed if all terrain a significant distance is lower; it almost never done anymore because of insurance and the obvious… 73 Kevin best to you and your friends. BTW: we have ravines that are 15+ feet deep from our monsoons in Colorado!

    We had somewhat the same thing but ours lasted 4 days with a total of 21.5” rain. The entire town of Rockport, Texas had flooded roads. Our blessing was we took the rain load just fine at our location. Thankfully we had just gone grocery shopping a day before the storm hit us. We had a house get hit by lightning one block over from us. My “tower and antenna survived just fine. Your damages, Kevin were greater as far as the land erosion. Many of our local homes and businesses did get about a foot or more of water inside. Thankfully you all were safe.

    I don't understand why people build flat/ground level homes on flat land right next to a wash...at or below the grade of the wash. Strange. Flash floods in the desert are scary. I was at a friend's house in Mesa during a huge storm some years ago. The lightning and thunder were amazing (and close). The rain was the most intense I've ever experienced outside of Florida. Their yard was well graded, though, with water directed away from the home and the home itself set up from the street. So we did not have a kitchen flood that night, lol.

One thing's for sure... you ain't going anywhere on that "road" for at least 2 weeks until the Sun has a chance to bake it solid once again... otherwise, you'll bury that thing to the frame in mud!!! Thing is that you can avoid the flash flooding and some of this damage is preventable if you don't build in known flash flood areas and/or grade the land appropriately so it won't flood. You cannot however, do any of that in a blizzard. You are pretty much stuck and one can only hope that if a blizzard is a possibility where you live that you have added in some extra precautions such as ways to keep warm, candles, canned goods, etc. Hope I am making sense. P.S. Native Arizonan here so I would literally die in a blizzard, lol. I'd keep the monsoons anyday because as much havoc that they can bring, they are fascinating to experience.

    I was in a "100-year" storm with associated flooding. What made it far wose were the people that just had to plow through the water so waves would enter homes. Then, there's the people (from out of town) that just have to stop and take picures of our misery.

    A way to fix the house being too low is to build a masonry wall around it with so it can keep a flood out. Or just do nothing and ask for a biscuit........ you decided to risk it.

    Time to put a 3 foot WAP all the way around the house! And move diet and rocks to divert water away from the house area! Concrete canals if needed! Unless , flooded houses- is yo thing!

    Yes, interesting video. However, you seem to have a generous definition of “yard”.

    Well, according to the dictionary, in the North American usage, "yard" is defined as, "a piece of ground adjoining a building or house.". So, technically, spot on. :-)

  • @loughkb

    Incorrect. an Haboob is just a violent wind storm carrying lots of dust. This is a massive thunderstorm cell that just happens to be kicking up some dust ahead of it.
