i totally understand her of not knowing how to balance taking breaks and studying , its like my mind hurts i say to myself “lets take a break” so i go to “sleep” and when “am trying to fall asleep” i stresss over the fact that am wasting time instead of studying

yes, studies have been done where they rank study methods based on their utility and the results say that highlighting, rereading and summarising notes although the most used they have very low utility. However, practice testing (which involves active recall) and spaced repetition really help enhance learning as they help you learn by recall not by recognition of the topics.

Being a medical student myself, I totally agree with what everyone commented to a certain extent. Everyone has different study techniques that is the most effective for them. However, the amount of time spent and effort put in in order to achieve the desired result between each different study techniques varies greatly. I used to use various study methods like the majority of college/university students do (highlighting, rereading, summarising) but slowly, it has come to a point where it simply takes up too much time considering the vast amount of knowledge you need to conceptualise and memorise. It depends. Writing notes is really helpful in memorizing ONLY if you have the time and not cramming. If you have so much time before your exam, it would really be helpful to write notes or keywords of the topic you’re studying. But if you have an exam tomorrow and you decide to write notes, it would really be time consuming and ineffective.

:^) the thing about med culture where most students make it seem like they didn't do much effort is sooo true. the tip about staying on my lane is exactly what i need for the finals.

SAME. a new med student asked me how to achieve better study-life balance and 2 years of med in, I think I have balance sometimes but finding balance is still a work in progress - and I think it always will be. I think for type A People like ourselves, once we found a balance, we want to strive to do ever better so we add on new goals and then mess up the balance LOL.

I stumbled across this video today after a day of flopped MCAT prep. I really appreciate your insight and this really raw and real view of a medical student. Like you said; there are a lot of people (medical students and even premeds) who come off as perfect, and always busy and doing so great. And that really makes people beat themselves up and forget how differently they function.
