Vlog: A Doll Collector's Journey

Ойын-сауық

Lately I've had some fun conversations with collectors about how they decided on a new doll - and what gives them pause, what questions they ask, etc. I'm certainly in a different place than I was a few years ago, so here's my story. What's yours?

The one thing I have always appreciated about you, Angie, is you have made it OK in my mind to collect dolls… I fought my head for a lot of years thinking it was a crazy obsession … thank you for giving me permission to collect dolls! Also my first Pullip doll was a custom I purchased on eBay from you. ⭐️

Thank you for making this video! It is such a helpful perspective and it doesn't get shared enough on the doll community. For me, I tend to have a different problem, I will sell things from my collection ruthlessly! ... but then later wish I had kept my favorite pieces and not sold a whole collection. In 2015 or so I sold all my Pullip dolls during a very difficult time and it still hurts sometimes. I had actually been aware of Pullip and collected some of the mini's as far back as 2006 when I was a teenager (shout out to 'Haute Doll Magazine; if anyone remembers that). So I think it can go both ways, too much or none at all, and both can make a doll collector sad. I just hope what everyone takes away is that you should buy/keep the dolls that you truly love and spark joy - don't try to collect them all, and don't sell them all when you are in a bad emotional state. Balance is best :)

Oh this brings up such a good topic that I should cover in my next vlog - seller's remorse! I try to be very careful about letting dolls go but there are a few that ugh still bite me because I let them go hastily. I wish I could be as "ruthless" as you! LOL!! You know, when I see people selling off their whole collection at once, I often wonder if it's an impulse reaction or simply something that is needed in a time where money is tight. Either way, it sends up a flare and I want to ask questions! :) You were an OG collector - 2006!!?? I hope you have found some joy in dolls you've collected since your purge.

@@OmochaCrush Ooo I'd love a vlog on this topic! For me it's been a combination of needing money and impulse when I've sold a bunch at once before things before. But I think when it was whole collection it could also be because something disappointed me about the product. Like I used to collect Kotobukiya Bishoujo, but then the comics just got so bad I didn't enjoy my collection anymore. In retrospect, I should have just stopped reading new comics and put my figures away for a while. Those things always come back around. Ultimately I've sometimes regretted begging ruthless and sometimes not, but when it's dolls I am almost always disappointed later when I sell. Pins, figures, stuff like that I rarely regret letting go, sometimes I do.

I believe in balance in everything in life … but it is difficult for me because I enjoy collecting all kinds of things! Self control is sooo amazingly hard!!! However, I find that if I practice self-control and balance in the long haul I am much happier… otherwise I find my collections start controlling me rather than me enjoying them.

i’ve watched your videos since 2015? when i first started collecting dolls and i really love this video. i totally get your emotional journey with them. you’re right how it’s a rush each new one you got, definitely addicting, and becomes a way of coping with life after a while. and because of that it becomes draining and lacking in emotion, and the picking apart of all their features and stuff.. i’m really happy that you found joy about your dolls in a different way- switching them out on that display shelf is such a great idea! and having a slimmer collection of the ones that really make you happy. by the way, you’re in your 40s?! get outta here. thanks for having this channel and for being a lovely person. ♡

It feels weird and sad that I don't like them anymore. But I still remember the feeling of when I got my first Pullip, and the ones after. Honestly it was greater than the feeling when I got my first BJD. Pullip was my first step into more serious/expensive doll collecting. I still watch you and love your content. There's been a few dolls that I bought over the years and i think to myself "why did I buy it, i could have saved that money for something else".

This is such a nice and insightful video, everyone changes over time and the reasons why we collect or even what it is we collect changes as well but the same love for dolls is always there. I really like the points you made about going from buying a doll because it really resonated with you to going full collector mode. I think I have a bit of experience with that, it took a few years but I slowly changed the focus of my collection to what I truly love and focus more on displaying them in a nice way rather than just merchandise and figures/dolls all crammed in. Also yay you joined the Pop Mart club!! XD I only recently got into them since I won their 10th anniversary contest a while ago and they sent me some as a prize, I love the Pucky series most.

It's so affirming to hear someone else's journey. I am on the same path with the collection I have ( it's not only Pullips) I have a feeling some of my girls will be finding new homes, and I am becoming very selective of who comes home. Too many times there is more encouragement ( sometimes enabling) to add to your collection than the discussion of balancing and paring down. I truly enjoy hearing how people's collections change as time goes on.

I've never needed to buy every doll, but I have bought dolls that I didn't really love just because they were cheap. I sell them on - I've sold 20+ dolls (now have about 70) because whatever I buy them for seems to change quickly for some dolls. My first two dolls I still have, though. I'm also more into customs these days. I usually just get face ups, as most full customs are more than I want to pay. I did pay AU$500 for a doll recently, though, but she was worth it!

Oh I understand where you come from Angie! Because I started collecting dolls and Pullips back when I was in university (and through your channel!) so I couldn't afford to collect a lot of Pullips all at once. So I had to be really selective with my doll collecting. I was collecting Living Dead Dolls and Pullips and now I'm only collecting Pullips. I never regret my collections but I'm hoping to have a nice gothic corner for my Living Dead Dolls and my gothic novels some day but now they are in storage. For Pullips, I was really lucky that early into collecting I found some of my grail dolls: Marianne, Lilico/Ririko from one of my favourite films Helter Skelter, Alice Du Jardin Mint and Midnight Velvet and they fulfilled each part of my personality. Although there was one year where I nearly kept feeling I had the need to get every new release and it was only the drain on $$$ that made me stop, haha. This year I also feel like Groove is killing it and I nearly kept getting all the dolls, but I've only bought Cardcaptor Sakura and found Mir (one of my grails!) all year. Now waiting to pay for Secret Garden of the Rose Witch haha. I have a collector's head too, I recently bought 1 Pucky from PopMart then it got addictive and snowballed to 4 and I made myself stop after the 6th one after I got the ones I really wanted.

But several on pre-order 🙈😇 but found myself thinking about this very subject last night! I told my husband last night that I don’t want a million dolls but I’ve been having ao much fun collecting so far! So… I decided last night that I’m going to keep the ones I have and do as you are- switch them out so I only have up to maybe 5 or 6 out at a time and just have fun giving them new looks/outfits etc. If and when something whether it be stock or one day a very very special custom doll comes along- I will treat myself! Thank you so much for your videos and sharing your personal feelings about all things dolls. I am in finance with a husband and two kids so When you put out these videos about balance but also include that we CAN be doll collectors and not be CREEPY or weird - it just helps me to know that I’m ok and I’m not alone in this 🥰 Thank you so much! I absolutely 💯agree with all you said. Good thing is I never bought each doll from Pullip line anyway, but still, there are some dolls I d never keep if not my daughter ( we have different taste sometimes) . So something that I ready to sell she wants to keep the most and it's a problem))). But we still sold some dolls and honestly I never regretted. For me to sell our own customs are the most difficult, cause I love them like kids. But in the end of the day, when you see the happy faces of your customers, it really overcomes all sad feeling. Cause you made people happy. And you did the same with a part of your stock doll collection- made other people happy. And it's 👏🙀😮amazing!

This is something I find fascinating, how artists are able to let their creations go! I wondered if it's "just business" and if that is how you don't get attached. I see some of these and think if I created this gorgeous doll she would never leave my home! LOL. I imagine the joy of customers is very rewarding, and being able to make money from your art must be very validating and rewarding!

@@OmochaCrush My mom is very business like and I always had troubles of letting go things until I got to know her secret. The key here is to keep some work for yourself from time to time. By the way, this is also a good way to track your progress as an artist. My mom shared that she always keeps a master copy of a new line, and I didn't understand why at the beginning, but later I realized that it was done for a few purposes: 1. When you do the first one you see how the process go and you can learn where you've made things too complected or too simple, or what could be changed or improved next time. Most of the time this version takes much more time than the rest of them, so it kind of makes it more labor intensive = more expensive for the customer. 2. You have a track record of your skill development over the years. 3. It makes easier to let go the similar ones in the line, as you kind of have a sibling of that doll family. 4. It allows to see how the materials that you use are aging. I learned this once I created a doll with the intention to sell it a couple of years ago. And it was my first doll that I did completely myself without my mom's help and I was prepared mentally to let it go. When I showed this doll to my mom and said that she could sell it, I was surprised when my mom said that she wants to keep this particular one. And than she told me her secret. It might not work for everyone, but I think it is a good way to learn how to let go of your creations.

I was about to bid on a jdoll simply because it was one I didn't have, but I'm proud to say I decided to save the room and money for one that is actually in my wishlist (jdolls are my favourite). But then again, the week before I got a duplicate of my favourite because the price was so good and she was missing things. It's one step forward and two backward 😅 I have many dolls I feel meh about, but they are not the kind worth selling even though they are in good condition. Mostly generic Barbies, redressed, some rebodied on cheap bodies. There are many dolls I gathered for makeovers and those were really fun. It's just that the speed at which I get them doesn't match the speed at which I customize them, and that gets overwhelming. I changed the way I look at new doll releases too. I found my "thing" (hair) and I'm trying to stick to it. By now I have pretty much every interesting hair colour and texture in my collection so I'm getting even pickier. I know I need to change some habits to keep the collection under control. I have one doll from a lot I knew from the start I'd be selling. So maybe once I break the ice with that, it will be easier to start selling more. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience! I would love to see some follow up detailing the process of deciding which dolls to sell, and also, which not to buy - the eye chips example was great.

I wait a month or so until I buy one, because by then I would only want the one I really like, and not just all of them because I liked one's hair, or ones outfit only. I loved Kitty K, Honeylicious and Pop B.B. from L.O.L. Surprise Remix when they were first leaked, but when some time went by, I realized I only liked Honey. Kitty looked like a loud mess, Pop is cute, but doesn't spark joy and same with Lonestar.
