Aqaba : Aqaba is a Jordanian port city on the Red Sea's Gulf of Aqaba. Inhabited since 4000 B.C., it's home to the Islamic-era Aqaba Fort. Its beach resorts are popular for windsurfing and other water sports, and the area is a top destination for scuba divers, with notable dive sites including the Yamanieh coral reef in the Aqaba Marine Park, south of the city.
Red Sea : The port city of Aqaba overlooks the Red Sea in Jordan and is known for the extensive watersports, snorkeling and scuba diving. In fact, the Red Sea is famous for the coral reef, attracting divers from around the world eager to see the well-known Yamanieh coral reef which is found in the Aqaba Marine Park.
In Jordan, there are 27 kilometers of coastline found along the Red Sea. The Red Sea is off the coast of East Africa and the Saudi Arabian peninsula. While it is called the Red Sea, it is not exactly red. It is named for a specific type of algae that is found in the water that gives a reddish-brown color. It is believed that the name also comes from the red mountains that surround the sea.
The port of Aqaba in the south of the city along the Red Sea serves as a large part of the economy bringing in containers through the port, as well as cruise ships promoting tourism in the region. Additionally, the Red Sea is famous for the diving and snorkeling options with many options situated along the beach and at the seaside resorts. In the north, there is a protected area in the Red Sea Marine Peace Park that is shared between Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Territories. This protected park contains water that has a higher salinity than the surrounding water. Within the park, the water is clearer and warmer.
Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth
As its name implies, this museum on the Dead Sea’s southern peninsula sits a staggering 1,329 feet below sea level. There’s more to see than just the rather impressive altimeter in negative figures, however. Housed in a beautiful modern building that unfurls like a nautilus shell, the museum boasts well-presented archaeological remains and modern artifacts covering some 4,500 years of human habitation in the surrounding area. Standout pieces range from Bronze Age pottery to contemporary woven baskets made from discarded plastic bags.
Dead Sea
The Dead Sea has the lowest elevation and is the lowest body of water on the surface of Earth. For several decades in the mid-20th century, the standard value given for the surface level of the lake was some 1,300 feet (400 metres) below sea level. Beginning in the 1960s, however, Israel and Jordan began diverting much of the Jordan River’s flow and increased the use of the lake’s water itself for commercial purposes. The result of those activities was a precipitous drop in the Dead Sea’s water level. By the mid-2010s, measurement of the lake level was more than 100 feet (some 30 metres) below the mid-20th-century figure-i.e., about 1,410 feet (430 metres) below sea level-but the lake continued to drop by about 3 feet (1 metre) annually.

Jerash, Jordan
Jerash (or Gerasa) is an ancient city in Jordan located 48km (30 miles) north of the capital, Amman (map). Famous as being one of the best preserved Greco-Roman cities in the Middle East, Jerash is one of the top attractions in Jordan (alongside Petra) and is certainly a must-visit. During my visit, I strolled around the city in awe as I passed amazing, 2,000 year-old structures and grand avenues. I discovered many things to see in Jerash such as Hadrian’s Arch, the Temple of Artemis, the Oval Forum and the countless columns with their intricate Corinthian capitals. As most of the main touristic sights in Jordan are south of the capital Amman, many people have asked me if it’s worth visiting Jerash in the north. My answer is a resounding YES!
