In this video I show you what the problem is on your Vizio LED TV that is causing the top or bottom to be darker dimmer than the rest of the TV. Whether this has happened slowly or happened overnight, I first show you 2 possible methods that may fix your TV. If those first 2 methods do not fix your TV then you will have to replace the LED back light strips. The process takes time and space and you will need some suction cups to remove the display carefully. Watch my TCL 55in TV fix video and that will show you the steps you will need to take. My new led strips are on order and I will make this fix video very soon so stay tuned. Thank you for your time.

This actually worked! It seems like the EASY fixes never work for me, but the second option on this video actually worked perfectly. The right half of my 65 inch Vizio was darker. I figured a 30 second fix is at least worth a try. Still can't believe it worked! Thank you!!!!

Anyone with this issue, as I had, I found a fix that he vaguely covered I believe. So I had the top half super dim and figured it was time to chunk it and spend another $500 on a new one but wait, I fixed it!! I tried the unplugging, pressing the power button for 30 seconds, etc but that didn’t work. So I thought I would try this: menu, Reset & Admin, Reboot TV. Bam. Works like a charm now. Would’ve never thought that it would be such an easy fix. Thank you!

Update: worked once but the top half darkness returned the next night and the fix did not help this time. Not sure why it worked the first time but not the second. Will look into it more.

Thanks for this because this very thing happened to me earlier today for the very first time as I was watching tv. I tried the soft recycle three times to no avail and since my tv is only 15 months old and I LUCKILY bought the extra 3 year warranty, I filed a claim with Allstate. But then I came back and re-watched your video because I had passed over the part about unplugging, depressing the power button and repluging in and I did that and the darkness was all gone! Just as clear and bright as it was before! So thanks a lot!! I wonder what it is about that process that made it straighten up.

  • @mikeoleksa

To follow up on my own comment... I went with the LED backlight replacement first, since it was only 55 USD for the strips. It did fix the issue with the top being darker than the bottom. I'm pretty sure it would fix most dark/bright screen issues after having the TV apart and seeing how the boards and LED strips all connect to each other.

Were you ultimately able to fix this problem? I have a Vizio D55-F2 with the exact same issue. I repaired several dead backlight LEDs and tested all strips before putting it back together to no avail. Going to check the drive signals next. This set has LED strips divided into five left-side and five right-side which makes it kind of odd to lose just the upper half backlighting. Thanks.

@@GrumpySphynx. This what I posted to iFixit a couple of years ago and still working fine: I have a Vizio D55-F2 with a darkened top half that appears exactly like the picture in the original posting. I disassembled the panel and replaced all defective LEDs, some of which fail open causing an entire strip to go out while others fail shorted allowing other LEDs in the strip to continue working. I tested all the strips before reassembling only to find the problem remained. I then began looking at the signals from the backlight PWM controller and saw that the darkened top strips were actually being PWM’d while the bottom half was full on. By luck, I disconnected the bottom strip’s 58V supply as a test and all other strips came on and, even at 50% duty cycle, it appeared to have a nearly uniform brightness. The darkened state also appears to stem from a possible power up test because the bottom LED row did not light when reconnecting the 58V supply while powered on and it appeared to be no PWM signal for that row as if it had been disabled. The 58V supply is from a very noisy switching circuit and I wonder if the fact that the mosfet for the bottom row is located right beside it could be affecting possibly the current sense going back to the backlight IC. It could also just be the backlight IC is bad, but it is a Novatek NT50511S for which I cannot find a data sheet. For now, I’ll live with it since the missing bottom row is hardly noticeable.

My Vizio D55-F2 is doing something weird... When I first turn it on, if it's on a TV channel, the screen will be full bright for about a half-a-second, maybe one full second. Then it goes dim in spots. And the same spots every time, as if some of the LEDs are burned out. But those LEDs work for a half-a-second or so -- and every single time, too. When you first turn it on after it sits overnight, or when you turn it off and back on after watching it for hours. So clearly those LEDs at those spots are capable of working. It's almost as if they're being de-activated by the TV (as if, say, the local-dimming circuit has gone a bit nuts). I fear that buying new LEDs won't fix my problem, since these LEDs do work, 100%, for about half a second or so... Consistently... Any tips?

Yes because they used good full sized parts. But of course, they also weighed 100lbs and took up about 20% of room space lol. Nowadays, in order to get those stunning pictures and slim profiles, they have to use microchips and itty bitty SMD components. They're much more prone to dying out from anything, but especially temperature issues. So it's all a trade off.

Hi Chris, on my 2018 P65-F1 the whole screen is dark similar to your upper half and I'm still able to see the images. Is there any way to check if all my LEDs are the problem or maybe the LEDs driver is the problem?
