Vivaldi’s Concerto in D Major “Grosso Mogul” is one of only a handful of concertos to survive with the original cadenzas. These extended unaccompanied passages, presumably by Vivaldi, give a vivid impression of virtuoso violin playing in the baroque. Vivaldi’s ”display” concertos-and also Locatelli’s-often set the stage with a series of forceful scales establishing a clear tonality, followed by dramatic episodes by the soloist. As impressive as the outer movements are, from a compositional point of view the highlight is the plangent middle movement: a tonal wilderness of harmony underpinning an extended, highly melismatic violin solo.
Of the many Mughal emperors, the greatest was arguably Aurangzeb, who ruled until 1707, although the title could refer to a number of his successors. Known as the "Conqueror of the World," Aurangzeb expanded the Mughal empire to the edges of the Indian subcontinent. Niccolao Manucci, a Venetian traveler, brought back first hand stories of the Mughal court and enjoyed a moment of fame as a sort of Marco Polo character. His stories ("Storia do Mogor") may have circulated in manuscript before being pirated and published in France in 1715 by François Catrou. Musicologist Michael Talbot connects the theme of the Mogul to Domenico Lalli's libretto "Il gran Mogol" which received several performances in different versions around the time of Vivaldi's concerto. A lively and ingenious keyboard version of the concerto by Johann Sebastian Bach comes down to us arranged for organ (BWV 594).

I think Vivaldi is inside Augusta McKay's violin, her interpretations of the works of the Venetian genius are impressive and masterful. Thank you very much Voices of Music

I LOVE these musicians. The solo violinist is outstanding. I love her cute little smiles. She is absolutely enjoying herself and the other musicians. They are all wonderful.
They are true musicians, inheriting and demonstrating the precious musical heritage left to the world since the Baroque Period of Music.

You could tell by her ear to ear grin that Augusta McKay knew she had just power-played the concerto as well as it could be done. It's a testament to the baroque bow, and probably the person who haired it, that there wasn't horse hair flying everywhere. That was amazing amazing right hand/arm work combined with flawless left hand work. It just doesn't get better than that. As if that wasn't already a vast measure of excellence, the chamber orchestra also performed flawlessly. The question and answer, give and take, between the soloist and orchestra was perfect. We have come to expect nothing less from Voices of Music. They are the layer of cream floating on the top of fresh milk... the ingredient which makes both music and life good.
Incredibly good interpretation. One of the best I have ever heard. When virtuosity meets joy of playing, it's called Augusta! You are a great violinist, thank you!❤

Superb quality. Audio and video.
This amazing and brilliant play made me very happy Not only dynamic solo play but also perfect harmony made this masterpiece best play. Especially, combination of violin and chamber organ in 2nd movement was very charming. Last movement's filale was astonishing. Thank you ❤
This version of the Vivaldi concerto RV 208 is for me the most beautiful, together with that of Enrico Onofri with the Giardino Armonico that I have ever heard. I really enjoyed this full version; Augusta McKay Lodge gave me chills.

In my opinion Vivaldi is having the 'dubious' distinction of creating an unending list of easily recognisable musical gems 'thrust' upon music lovers to test their memory! This is one such masterpiece.I am flabbergasted by your wonderful rendition. Gracias.

I’m amazed that before the advent of music composition software, composers like Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, etc had to write their musical scores out by hand…this is just mind-blowing to me…how were able to do it without coming down with carpel tunnel’s, given the amazing complexity of their music? I can barely write out a one page letter by hand.

@@OppenheimerDestroyerofwo-bj5ie perhaps, but I haven’t read that it affected the ability of Chopin, Rachmaninov, Liszt etc (and perhaps Liszt should have written less, given than a lot of his music is empty virtuoso fluff) to maintain their virtuoso techniques.

If I may be so bold as to ask, who wrote the cadenza in the last movement? If memory serves (and it probably doesn't at my age) Vivaldi only provided a very rough outline for a cadenza. I'm curious to now whose version of it Augusta McKay Lodge is playing here. It's spectacular, and really shows her ability as a performer quite well. It's not something that just any violinist could pick up and make happen, especially considering the balancing act which is position work on a baroque violin,.

There are three surviving cadenzas in manuscript, they are Vivaldian in style. If you aren't handy with manuscript sources, there's a small company called Snakewood editions that has transcriptions, they are very nice people.

@@VoicesofMusic Thank you very much! In my college days, before I became disabled, I was quite familiar with various sources, But a lot has changed in the intervening half century. I will be quite interested in acquiring a copy of the cadenzas to study. The performance was extremely impressive, and I'd like to follow along with it and learn from it, and from the performance too. Thanks again. I really appreciate your helpfulness in this matter. It is yet another reason why I am a supporter of VoM even though it is very unlikely that I'll ever be able to attend one of your concerts.
🥰🥰🥰🥰
The performance is technically polished and gorgeous. I have noticed, however, a recent tendency by classical musicians to rush fast movements, and I'm puzzled why this seems to be happening so often these days. I don't deny that these artists possess the true virtuosity to play this music flawlessly at lightning speed, but I wonder if that is what the composer actually intended. For instance, it strikes me that the first movement here is really being played "Presto" rather than the "Allegro" that Vivaldi indicated (though the third movement does seem to be taken at a slightly slower pace that achieves a fine "Allegro"). Altogether this is a beautifully recorded, sumptuous performance, even if the first movement is a bit caffeinated...!

Some general thoughts on tempo: the mathematician Mersenne measured the bow speeds of the top players, and it was significantly faster that what one sees today. So as far as historical tempos go, perhaps we have a ways to go, or perhaps what sounds fast to us is not the same as in the baroque, as a set of perceptions. I suppose since ppl in the 18th century complained that Vivaldi played too fast, if we moderated the tempo it would be expressly different than what Vivaldi wanted. An interesting feature of baroque tempo terms is that they refer to the character, figuration and ornamentation of the music, not the metronome type speed which came a bit later. So the term "allegro" is more of a style than a speed. To my ear, some of the figuration, particularly the imitations of the trumpet acclamations, at a slower tempo would sound careful rather than brilliant. But it's subjective, of course.
¿ Es que se puede hacerlo mejor ?
😊😊😊 oh my my my .. this Video (and MANY others from VoM ) answers TWO questions at once : Who wrote the Best Baroque Violin Music ? What ENSEMBLE performs better the Baroque Music ? 😮😮😮 These are my answers too 😮😮😮
Oh my! Such a performance! The English language needs more superlatives to describe this artistic delivery. Bravo! And thank you!!
