Before ChatGPT and DALL-E 2: Technology in Art and The Weight of the Artist’s Hand
For hundreds of years, the development of new technologies and production have fuelled discussions in the artistic realm. With recent advances in AI technology generating text, image, sound, and video, artists, art critics, and the general public have been questioning how AI might impact our conceptions of art, issues of creativity, as well as the value and recognition of an artist’s production. I will explore the work of artists who have been using AI systems to produce art. Before the recent boom of AI text and image generators (more than ever accessible to wide audiences), artists such as Sougwen Chung and Refik Anadol were already incorporating artificial intelligence into their creative processes. Additionally, artists have also explored the intersections of art and technology using AI and robotics. Reflecting on these examples, I will reflect on Sougwen Chung’s rhetorical inquiry: “what becomes of the human hand? Where does AI end and We begin?”
