As a child I would push the heel of my hands into my eyes. You get a spectacular light and movement and shapes you can see inside your closed eyes. When you squeeze your eyes you get same effect but not as dramatic.

Hey there. Our son is 2 years 2 months. Just started the process of getting him speech therapy. His mom and I are 99% hes on the spectrum. We have a ways to go. He laughs and he can understand us when he wants too. When mom says nite nite, he runs away and hide in his tent lol. But verbally - its just like this video. Moans, and high pitch. He stims with his arms a lot. Jumps a lot when he's excited. I've been researching as much as I can. I just finished the book "10 things a child with autism wants you to know". Good book. It taught me a lot. My goal is to educate myself continually so my wife and I can be the best parents for him. I do have fear. Mainly of "will he be happy in life". I pray my son communicates verbally. Right now - we are going to attempt sign language. Just today - I put 3 pictures of 3 animals on the table and said "Where's the monkey?" He picked it. I did this again thinking it may have been luck, but asked him to pick the Horse. Bam! got it! So I know he understands some things. Keeping his attention is harder. Any recommendations, or good books to read? All information is welcome! I'm very happy to hear you son became verbal. How long did that take if you don't mind me asking.

Hi there! Eli is 8 and is now in gen Ed second grade. He does speak a little like Yoda. :) You can probably go to my profile and find a more recent video of his speech. It was quite a process and we also began with sign language. Eli eventually moved to an AAC device, which for us was an iPad and the Proloquo2go app. He literally took it out of my hands while I was trying to set it up, navigated the folders, and selected "I want apple juice." We were floored! Always assume competence, and assume your son can hear and understand everything you say in front of him, because he probably does! My favorite autism books are "In a Different Key," "Neurotribes," and "Uniquely Human." If you're on Facebook, feel free to look me up and I'll share more resources. I'm pretty passionate about the subject!

@@v8_freak622 You will man. I assure you that. How you communicate may be different than traditional talking back and forth, but you will communicate with him 100%. When I first came to the realization that our son was had autism, it was hard. But as time has gone on, and I’ve learned more and more about it. It’s not a death sentence or anything. There’s a lot of good books out there. I prefer listening to them with audible personally. But I assure you you can communicate with your son. My son and I laugh together, play together, hang out. All that stuff. Her 2 and a half now. He’s very happy, gets lots of love from his mother, sister and I. He overall is a curious toddler. What I have learned in the last 6 months is autism and communication is finding out what he understands and how conveying it in a way that makes sense to both of you. Overall, I think my best first steps for you is recommending you educate yourself as much as you can. Understand, from multiple point of views, what it means to be autistic. Understand what’s going on in your sons head. I assure you he wants to communicate with you as much as you want to with him. Overtime you both will learn from one another :). I could go on for hour’s. But I know what you feeling. It’s not easy to accept at first, but once you do, you you shift your focus to “how can I adapt to his way of thinking”? One of my favorite books on this is called “Uniquely Human”. Grab it on audible. You won’t regret it.

Your language is fine. 😊 It is good to have your child tested, but our children are all unique with different strengths and weaknesses, regardless of their diagnosis. I have two autistic children. Eli, the little boy in the video, is now eight and attends school in a regular classroom. He struggles with language but is very smart with math and geography. My oldest daughter is almost 20 and was diagnosed with ASD at age 18. She has always been different but is gifted in music and art. She teaches piano and sells paintings, and she is happily married. Autistic children can lead happy, productive lives. It just might look different from what everyone else calls success. 😊 God bless you and your daughter!

I’ve learned that asd can be very tricky because a lot of things can be normal behavior or asd. It’s hard to tell. Usually it takes multiple symptoms to get a diagnosis.. also be careful.. I think some doctors are little trigger happy with the diagnosis. Let them grow a little and see why stops and what continues and document. At 3-4 see if a diagnosis is appropriate. That’s my recommendation but I’m not a doctor

It is a good idea to have a doctor check it out, in case there is a vision problem. But if it is visual stimming (a sign of autism), it's perfectly harmless and could be done for a variety of reasons, including calming down, or just for pleasure. In my son's case, he just liked how it felt to squeeze his eyes shut to a rhythm, just like I sometimes swing my crossed leg. ☺️

When Eli was diagnosed, it felt like my husband and I were expected to be sad or something. But we were like, "Woah, that explains a lot! Time for some research!" I will confess that I went down a few rabbit trails, like fish oil and GFCF diet. But we've come to realize that Eli is fantastic just like he is! He has challenges, but so does everyone, right? The best resources have been from autistic adults willing to share their stories. We also discovered through the process that our adult daughter is also on the spectrum. She is now a synesthesia artist and she teaches piano.
