Only Band Geeks Can Relate ;) When you hit that last note it has nothing to do with winning, but you get a huge rush of emotions knowing you just gave it you're all. I cried when I was a senior because I knew I would remember that moment for the rest of my life. It is a beautiful feeling and watching you perform brought back those emotions. Congrats on your win, you all are amazing!

I’m not teacher or student of the Ranger band but I’d like to share what is my interpretation of the different parts of the show. Of course I have no clue if this is the real intent of the composer and directors but it make sense retrospectively (at least to me :) ). 0:00 Life and Death, Lost Theme by Michael Giaccino Our Hero (the Vista Ridge Ranger Band) is in his current situation. Is not comfortable one as there is a sense of longing and despair. A sense of being lost. The trumpet and mellophone solos coming from opposite sides of the field are cries for help and for being heard and seen. Is someone listening? 1:03 Finding and Believing by Pat Metheny Then, is it there. A call for adventure. A call to change the present status and pursue something meaningful. The idea that change is possible and it is up to them to achieve it. They don’t know if it’s a call from the outside or a call from their inside. They just know they have to move. 1:58 The Cycle Song by Himogen Heap Animated by this feeling they go out to the world to look for this call, for this challenge. Still they are not sure where this path is going to take them but they know there is not turning back to the old situation. They analyze and test their skills, their weapons, their courage, what do they have to face the unknown? 3:30 Loss by Don Ellis Then doubt appears (3:50 Flugelhorn first solo). Old feelings of despair reappear. Maybe their skills and weapons are not enough for the task in front of them. They are afraid to get into the cavern where the ultimate challenge lies. They need counsel, they need guidance. They start to put themselves together again. They listen to the advisers (4:30 Soprano Sax solo), the old wise counselors giving them encouragement and wisdom and they start to re-discover also the wisdom within themselves. Suddenly, the realization hits them (4:54). They are up to the task, they have everything they need for the challenge. They are ready and eager to get into the cavern to deal with whatever is waiting for them. But first, they listen to some final words of wisdom to help them in their task ahead (5:14 second Flugelhorn Solo). They are ready. (5:45) Preamble Decided, they march towards the cavern. They still don’t know what exactly they’ll face but they have confidence that they have everything they’ll need. Tension and anticipation is building. (6:05) Digging in the Dirt by Peter Gabriel They enter the cavern (6:05 Trombone solo). They start facing the challenges of being in the dark and being in the unknown. The more the move into the deep they more skillful and resourceful they have to be. (6:28) They reach the end of the cavern and the ultimate challenge. They are using all their resources, weapons and wisdom to battle. It is now or never. Finally (6:51) They succeed. They have conquered. (7:08) Flute solo Once they have passed the ultimate challenge, they are guided out of the cavern, towards light. They emerge victorious. (7:37) They have been Found. It is time to go back to home. (7:41) Amazing Grace by John Newton In their way back is time to celebrate and to be grateful for this amazing transformation journey. To thank the pain and to thank the growth. There is realization that it was worthy but above all, that it was meaningful. (7:59) Life and Death, Lost Theme by Michael Giaccino The band is where it started. But the situation couldn’t be more different. They play the starting theme in a triumphal way as a sign of what they have conquered. As a sign that they have Found themselves. This is their starting place but after the journey, it won’t be never the same. Neither will they. ++++ It was a privilege to accompany you in your own journey to this championship. Waiting anxiously on what you are preparing for next year!

Mauricio Malpica This is exactly what the interpretation of the storyline means, or at least I think so. They really touched the audience as well as moved the audience. The show delivers a powerful message and is profound when it comes to the execution. This is personally my favorite show of all time. I have never seen a band make such a big impact on an audience, they definitely set the bar up high for the future. I wish them the best and I can’t wait to see what they have in store next season

Can we have directors' and maybe students' commentary version of the performance over this play, like how movie titles do? I think what the choreography meant and the behind stories are worthy to be recorded. It was definitely awesome moment. Thank you all for the great performance.

When my daughter's band, JP Steven's HS, competed in the Area H competition, we were able to see Vista Ridge and even though us chaparones and kids had the visitor's view, it was still spectacular! I was so intrigued that I forgot the reason I was sitting in the bleachers. Now seeing your band at the State finals from the proper view was...I can't describe, only that of all the bands competing, Vista Ridge was the best. Your band has raised the bar to another level! Congratulations on a much deserved win!!!

@@jerrytang5888Indiana was the dominant force in the 80’s 90’s and early 2000’s. Every knee it as I was a music major on those days. Late 2000’s we saw a shift. 2010’s Texas became the dominant and clear force to beat. Anything past 2012 was Texas. Had SASR sent gold to Nats every year past 2013 (woodlands) the Eagle would still be here in Texas. Remember like BA and Tarpon on a rotation. Nats is in Indiana back door.

!!VERY LONG COMMENT, SORRY!! First off congratulations to the champions. As a John Paul Stevens Band alumni I'll say we have never been on a level close to you guys or any other state finalist, let alone qualified for the state competition since opening in 2004. I have had my and many other hearts broken twice when discovering that the Area competition was the end of the line for us [although our shows were lame], and at the time we only competed in Area G which included Laredo and the Valley. After graduating I would find out that UIL changed certain regions and areas now Stevens becomes region 29 and area H and must compete with schools such as Vista Ridge, Vandegrift, Leander, and Westlake [I like to call them the big 4] who are consistent state finalist contenders. I at first thought this was criminally unfair since advancing to state would have to mean beating a state finalist contender, but after the first year I realized that competing with the big 4 as well as other talented schools out there was a very well disguised blessing as it made Stevens better. Although they still have lots to learn in order to get on this level. I was able to see this show when it was performed in exhibition at your competition and everything from the rehearsal to the performance was just on a whole other world it made me want to see Vista Ridge take this all the way to the top. I was filled with joy after hearing that this school won it all. This was well deserved and I'm super proud. Hopefully one day my old school can reach as far as you guys and start a big 5, but until then congratulations once more. Best band in this really big state.
