Your comment becomes trivial when you don't include "I think...". Whilst I am not criticising your preference, you cannot justifiably make your claim because you cannot possibly have heard every other singer. There are numerous singers from early in the 20th century who in my opinion outshine most of today's singers. I am not a Callas fanatic but I have to say her singing of "Vissi d'arte" along with Leontyne Pryce are unsurpassed to my ear.

A great melody. written by an Italian author played by a Romanian artist and sung in Whashington. Beauty has no nation. It belongs to everyone. It does not want boundaries.

Puccini dedicated Tosca to another MAGNIFICENT Romanian soprano, Hariclea Darclee , the first to sing it in 1900. "Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore " was added to initial Tosca, after Darclee asked Puccini to compose another aria, and this was composed especially for her.

beautifully said, this is humanity's music and beauty. I wish we could all see the earth from space like astronauts have, then we would realize how precious and beautiful the earth is and that we should all look after it together. It would give us a dose of much needed humble pie and inspire awe.

Anghela demonstrate finest art with her soprano voice; never heard this as clear and with such long and stabile high notes ,always sensitive, she was completely filling all hearts, the best an artist can achieve. BRAVO Angela !

Stunning..just stunning....an unsurpassed version of this amazing aria, and her voice just keeps getting better and better...

I have to admit I think that Angela is the real thing: a Star. She has passion, is very intelligent, and really musical. Her voice is rich and lovely, her delivery sincere and forthright and her presence charismatic. I think I like her a lot.

Georghiu has such a powerful voice, and sings with such passion! I was entranced by her performance.

Oh my Lord...what a tremendous voice this lady has...such control and power...absolutely stunning!!

I listened to Callas right before I listened to this, so I was prepared to be let down. But I was not. This is an outstandingly beautiful performance. Bravo!

Una bellissima donna,con una voce meravigliosa.

How can this performance have 22 dislikes?! I was moved to tears it was so beautiful. Angela put so much emotion behind it, that I could feel it in my soul! Those who've disliked this either have no ear for real music or don't have a soul, because this was absolutely divine.

Daniela d Daniela d Wow..for this reason I’m now even more amazed of your ignorance. I could not imagine a Romanian not being proud of this lady!! I’m actually astonished..If you are not proud of this unique artist that has one of the most beautiful and recognizable voices in Opera of this century thus far and that is probably one of the very very few sopranos of her generation to be remembered for ever as one of the best Violetta, Tosca, Magda, Adriana or Mimi in history(!), then I guess you are just a lost cause. I have listened to her many times at The Met, La Scala, London, Paris, Berlin and elsewhere and never had any problem hearing her in the opera houses, so my opinion is based on actual experiences, whereas your comment about amplifiers was just rude and uncalled for. Moreover, there is much more besides volume when it comes to a voice, but unfortunately people nowadays think that in Opera the louder the voice, the better..which si wrong on so many levels. If you are frustrated of someone’s success, it speaks “volumes” about you :) and no one else. To each his own. I am aware that art is subjective but I thought that one should have an opinion based on own experiences and supported by facts, rather than just writing dotish comments without any reason and without any argument.

I cannot add one more word to what you just said. She transmits EMOTIONS, not just MUSICAL TECHNIQUE.. This is what Maria Callas sent when she sang this famous aria, and this is what great Angela Gheorghiu did and does when she sings this aria!!! She IS TOSCA. What a way to honour Grace Bumbry! Grace visited our school in Khayelitsha Township Cape Town way back in 1994,she was with Simon Estes.What they left here can be seen in Pumeza Matshikiza and more.3 years later Simon Estes High School was established,that High School produced what is now called Simone Estes Alumni Choir and Heavenly Voices. South Africa now produces opera singers like never before.Thanks to Mama Grace and Tata Simon for planting such a seed in our community.I wish one day they can come back here,we want to honour them in our own special way!

If I ever needed to explain what a "diva" was, (in the best way possible) I just say "watch this" So beautiful in every possible way.

About this time with my wife I attended Covent Garden for a performance of Tosca with Bryn Terfel as Scarpia, opposite some lesser-known soprano. Just before curtain up, the familiar ritual was enacted of a flunky grovelling onto the stage to apologise abjectly that one of the leading singers was indisposed, and was to be replaced with a stand-in who happened to be in London that evening and had agreed to perform at short notice. But it wasn't BT who was poorly - rather the soprano was to be replaced by ... Angela Georghiu! Can you imagine? She just is Tosca, incarnate! The treat of a lifetime.

I do not have the eloquence (or the interest) in comparing this great singer to other great singers. I think she does a magnificent job her. It started slowly but every time I hear her, I like her more and more. I think she is a gifted soprano who should not be demeaned. Clearly, Grace Bumbry was moved. Thank you for posting this.

Just came in from listening to Fleming's version which sounded technically perfect to me but *this* had both. The interpretation is just THERE.

I'm not an opera expert...all I know is this beautiful woman's performance gave me chills!! The audience apparently felt the same. Even Bumbry's reaction expressed approval (at one point she winced anticipating maybe Angela not hitting a high note..but she nailed it!). Some in this thread criticize her technique, but if music is supposed to evoke emotion, Angela surely succeeded with me!

I agree with @Delores Jackson and I’m a romanian woman...maybe Angela is not the best but she touch my soul ... and not only mine... I don’t understand one of my people that have bad words about her, they must respect her...

This is probably my favorite version of all time. Rich rich rich.

Simon bates, DJ. Moved to "classic FM" I was driving the M42 to Warwick. He played this aria and after it finished, there was a long pause. He could not speak, I was in tears and had to pull off the motorway. I bought the DVDs... My ambition is to see AG live. Thanks to Mr Bates, I am a life long fan.

I love Maria Callas, specially singing "Vissi d'arte"....but I also think that Angela has never been bettered performing this, .......superb.

That wonderful voice. That power in her voice. Simply divine. This song made my day.

i felt the pain, i felt the despair, the loss, she projected and played the role very well,

simply...impressive...

She reminds me of Callas. Reminds me how truly superb Callas was.

I know I will be shot down in flames for saying this, but in my humble opinion, Ms Gheorghiu sings Ms Callas into a cocked hat in this aria. Bravissima bella donna!

This is a voice from heaven - God sent ; no other way to describe it . No wonder she had the audience in the palm of her hands - her tone is pure GOLD and the depth of human expression and feelings ❤️

Vissi d`arte, vissi d`amore {I have lived for the art, I have lived for love} the famous aria sung by Floria Tosca from the opus Tosca by Puccini. Miss Angela Gheorghiu sings so eloquently with passion and artistic love.

I wish we could have seen the standing ovation that she received at the end - she deserved it because she gave *me* goosebumps hearing the recording; I can only imagine what it must have been like for the audience. If Angela Gheorghiu is to be remembered only for this performance of Vissi d'arte, then she is definitely among the great divas that graced the opera stage.
