    I’d count that as a visit to Haiti. You found a neat loophole and it hits all three of the criteria I use; 1- you had legally entered the country 2- you were under the jurisdiction of that country 3- You set foot on the country’s land It counts.

    I think doing what you did with Haiti is more of a country experience than the one Estonian road that goes through Russia

  • @glowerworm

    @glowerworm

    5 ай бұрын

    Why? I would think given how large Russia is that the true Russian experience would just be driving on some random road in the middle of nowhere. And also, Estonia and Russia are bordering each other but nature doesn't know borders. The ecosystem of Estonia right near Russia would feel quite Russian. I guess it depends on whether you value the nature side of things or the society/culture side of things

  • @chitlitlah

    @@glowerworm I think if I went on that cruise ship, I'd at least be able to say I set foot on Haitian soil, smelled the air, maybe touched the grass and got bitten by some of the insects. The signs on the road going through Russia tell you not to stop, and if you can't stop, all you can really do is see Russia through your car's window and know that it's under your butt. It may just be me, but I feel like there are different levels of going somewhere and getting a tactile sense from it takes you up a level. I've been to all the Great Lakes, but I only went on a bridge over one of them while I've touched all the others, so I don't feel like the first one counts quite as much.

    I'd say that counts as a visit for Haiti. Also, not saying I called it, but 3 weeks ago in that community post I commented, "I wonder if he’s on a cruise to Labadee?" Looks like an interesting place to visit and to see how Royal Caribbean still keeps some parts of Haitian culture and flags around the peninsula.

    Kind of makes since Haiti has a higher travel warning than North Korea. North Korea tours are likely planned by the government and made specifically to show the best parts of the country in hopes you report their propaganda. Provided you aren't American or break any of their rules, North Korea probably won't be as dangerous to you as their regime is to their people. Whereas Haiti, you could easily stumble in a bad area and get in trouble.

  • @rogink

    @rogink

    Quite. But Haiti and DPRK are polar opposites. North Korea has a govt in total control. Haiti might have a govt but it has no control. Even if the Haiti govt offered 'tours' how safe would they be? No safer than Somalia.

    It's an interesting, philosophical point. What is a 'visit'? I've travelled through Switzerland a few times, but only to get to Italy by road or rail. Have i visited the country? I think you need to interact with the locals. The nearest I've got is at a petrol station where we filled up and bought a few snacks. Perhaps the best I can claim is that I've visited a Swiss petrol station.
