Visiting SASKATCHEWAN - Canada's rural wasteland

My first-ever trip to the Canadian province of Saskatchewan and the city of Regina. Saskatchewan is a land of farmers, wheat, and perogies, but is it as dull as people say?

Hi J.J. I was born and raised around Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and continue to live here. I appreciate you doing a little tour of our province and the capital. I'm Ukrainian and perogies are a big part of our tradition. The Saskatchewan Roughrider's fan buy more merchandise than all the other Canadian Football League teams combined because for the longest time it was this province's only professional sports team. We now have a professional lacrosse team (Saskatchewan Rush) that is very successful as well. It is mostly flat and quite windy. I grew up a mixed grain and beef cattle farm which is a big part of this province's economy. No, we don't stook wheat sheaves anymore. We have very expensive combines that can cut the stem, separate the grain and shred the waste for us. I actually didn't realize Saskatchewan has a different flag for the French community in this province. We have a slower, more peaceful pace of life in our province and that's the main reason I love it here.

I have a Saskatoon Berry tree in my yard. However we call them Serviceberries or Shadberries here. They are called Serviceberries because they are one of the first flowers to blossom in the spring, so it was a sign in rural areas---especially in the mountains---that the roads were becoming passible and the circuit riding preachers would be coming through and they could have services again. They are called shadberries as their blooming coincides with the shad runs in New England. My grandmother used to make serviceberry jam. It tasted almost exactly like Dr. Pepper! (Several people have remarked on it; as a matter of fact, some nurseries market it as "The Dr. Pepper Tree".)

A couple of years back I drove through Saskatchewan on my way to see my dad in Edmonton coming up from Indiana. When you fly from one place to another you really miss the character of a place. I saw quite a bit of wildlife even in areas you wouldn't have expected to see much. For example, many coyotes and incredible waterfowl mostly just along the highway as I headed west. As a photographer, it was a wonderful place to visit. If I ever pass through in the future I think I'd like to see Prince Albert National Park.

Saskatchewan will recognise Joni Mitchell as one of the greatest people it has produced. She was born and educated in or near to Saskatoon and her great skills in writing, art and music are a tribute to the high quality of education she received in SK. She did leave to study art in Toronto and really never came back (she lives in LA now). But that ought not to prevent the province talking up her origins. When she is no longer with us, a statute and some plaques on houses where she lived as a child will hopefully appear.

6:18 “I suppose the occasional river”. You’ve never seen a lake before? Saskatchewan is home to over 100,000 freshwater lakes, mostly in northern Saskatchewan within the forested regions which cover over half of the province. Saskatchewan also has several saltwater lakes, similar to the Dead Sea, which are very unique. Many of these lakes, such as Redberry lake, are conservation zones for many unique and diverse wildlife. You even mention that Saskatchewan means fast flowing water, I just think it’s funny you didn’t even bother to stop by the river or regions surrounding the river it’s named after. Saskatchewan is also called the land of the living skies. Had you only decided to leave the second worst city in Saskatchewan during your synopsis of the ENTIRE province, you might have seen our beautiful sunsets or northern lights. I just can’t believe that your whole “tour” of this province didn’t even have you leave a single city, when cities aren’t even where the beauty of this place lies.

@@ericfrehlich8800 See, I don’t know JJ. I don’t watch his videos, so I don’t know what other content he creates. I do know that I live in Saskatchewan, and have really managed to find so many beautiful things here. I’m reminded of a line in the TV show Firefly, where the rich and snobby doctor from the big city ranted about how terrible their rural lifestyle was. The response of one of the girls was “if that’s what you think of this life, you can’t think much of those that choose it, can you?”. By making an insulting video about Saskatchewan like this, JJ is also insulting the many people that choose to live here. Additionally, he titled this video “Canada’s rural wasteland” which suggests that he’s not just insulting Saskatchewanians, but also anybody who chooses a rural lifestyle. It’s a mentality that is so narrow, to come into a new place with a very specific view of what you consider “good” or “bad”. His distaste for rural land is funny to me, as though nature isn’t good enough on it’s own without millions of humans destroying it. Unfortunately, his narrow minded nature in coming to a new place to diagnose it (and by extension, it’s people) based on his already existing standards is disturbingly similar to how European colonists originally came here: Too caught up looking for their own single definition for beauty they they disregarded the value of the land and the people that lived on it. I do not know JJ or watch his videos (why would I watch the videos of someone who slanders our way of life and looks down on us?), but this video here says SO much more about his character than it does Saskatchewan’s.

From an Ontarian who lived in rural Saskatchewan for over a year. The biggest thing you missed in Saskatchewan was hanging out with the locals. Probably for the best since the odds of having your ass kicked was quite high. The charm of Saskatchewan is a slow build, you can't get it unless you spend some serious time there. As someone who's lived in Regina their whole life I'd like to say you really dissed Saskatchewan. This video is also downright disrespectful in many ways *cough cough* Humboldt Broncos. If you proclaim yourself to love experiencing cultures why didn't you try talking to the locals, or get a guide, or just generally do some research about the goddamn province? The flat lands are real scenic when the sun is setting, and there's an abundance of beautiful valleys scattered through out the south. You didn't even look around in the museum or go into the Science Center, they're more directed to a young audience but are really well put together and offer entertainment (Not to mention if you went into more than just the gift shop in the museum you could have learned some about Saskatchewan). The farmer's market is actually very interesting and filled with culture, I go every year and there has never failed to be at least one table being rented out by hutterites. If you would have actually done your research you'd probably know what the hell I'm talking about. I can definitely confirm that the city itself isn't some thriller or generally very pretty like the one you grew up in but it's a cute friendly place to live. The locals are great too, which is a reoccurring pattern you'll find all around the province. Although I can only speak from visits to close neighboring city's like Moose Jaw and Saskatoon, which are much more interesting I'll admit. You really should have checked them out to get the real Saskatchewan feel, there's some hella good fudge made down in Moose Jaw that's to die for! Really wish you would have given us Saskatchewaner's an actual chance.

I used to lived in SK for more than 2 years, at the southeastern part of that province called the town of Moosomin. Then i moved back to AB where i first lived my 4 years in Canadan prior to moving to SK in 2016-2018. Been to BC and MB as well for a visit, and i can really tell the differences of those 4 provinces I've been to in my 7 years in Canada. But i should say that, 3 of the most significant things that occured in my life in this country, were all granted in SK. In SK, i got my very first driver's license, my very first brand new car that i bought from Regina, and my PR status which is the most important thing. That's why i owe a lot from that province. SK may not be as beautiful as BC and AB, yet it played an important role in my life here in Canada. Wherever in Canada i may be moving in the future, SK is still one of the most unforgettable place i could still consider. I maybe back to AB now yet, i still go and visit my friends in SK even it takes me 10 hours drive from Camrose, AB to Moosomin, SK. And another thing, there are lots of handsome guys in SK, those with German and Scottish descendants. 😉

If it's Regina, the famous Canadian politician was probably Andrew Scheer. That would be my best guess. I've been to Saskatchewan twice, and Regina for a similarly brief period of time. I've generally liked my time in that province. There's geographical variety, especially once you get out of the prairies and into the more wooded regions further north. Saskatoon was more fun to visit than Regina from my brief experience in both. There's nowhere in Saskatchewan that's like Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto or even Edmonton and Calgary. But it has its charms, especially if you're inclined to drive around.
